Robert Wentz
Robert Davis "Rob" Wentz, 48, of Queenstown, died in an automobile accident July 10, 2002 on Bennett Point Road in Queenstown.
Born Oct. 21, 1953, in Kingston, Pa., Mr. Wentz graduated from Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School in 1971 and was an exchange student with the Rotary International Exchange Student Program in Sweden from 1971 to 1972. He attended the University of London School of Economics in 1975 and received a bachelor of arts degree in English and economics from Bucknell University in 1976.
He was a resident of Chicago from 1978 to 1992 where he pursued a career in publishing sales. There he was a member of the Chicago Yacht Club.
In 1993, he was married
to Martha Morris Wentz. The couple then moved to the Eastern Shore. From 1993 to the present he was a partner in Computer Publishing Group Inc.
He was an active member of the Centreville Rotary Club and in his earlier years of the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. During summers in his youth he was a lifeguard at Ocean City. He was a world-class sailor and was most content on the water with his crew.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Charlotte Davis Wentz of Forty Fort, Pa., and his sister, Rebecca Wentz Wood of Wayne, Pa. He was the son of the late Robert E. Wentz.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 408 S. Liberty St., Centreville, where friends may call an hour before services. Burial will be private.

Nellie DeJesus
Nellie Catherine Smith DeJesus, 91, of Annapolis, died July 9, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. DeJesus was born Aug. 31, 1910, in Annapolis, and attended Anne Arundel County public schools.
After traveling extensively with her husband, Fred DeJesus, during his tenure in the military, she returned to Annapolis, where she owned and operated her own taxicab business. She also was the owner of the Coronada Restaurant, which was located on Clay Street many years ago.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Travel, wildlife, fishing and boating were among her interests.
Mr. DeJesus died in April 1983.
Surviving are one son, Fidel DeJesus Sr., and one sister, Violet Almencion, both of Annapolis, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Nancy Taylor, Helen Smith, Eva Belt, Howard Siscoe and Charles and Jesse Smith.
Viewing will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by a Christian wake at 10:30 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 87 West St. Burial will be in Cedar Bluff Cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
John Mitchell Jr.
Funeral services for John Henry Mitchell Jr., 46, of Dunkirk, were held this morning at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings.
Also known as "Plumber, " Mr. Mitchell died of congestive heart failure July 6, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis of congestive heart failure.
He was born in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 26, 1956, and attended Southern High School. He was self-employed as a landscaper.
Mr. Mitchell enjoyed fishing and hunting, working as a DJ, playing horseshoes and cookouts.
Surviving are his wife of 15 years, MaryBeth Sutphin Mitchell, and two sons, John H. Mitchell III and Derrick E. Mitchell, all of the home.
Burial was in Moses cemetery in Drury.
Brenda Prout
Brenda Lee Williams Prout, 52, of Huntingtown, previously of Annapolis and Lothian, died of complications from brain cancer July 10, 2002 at Calvert Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
The daughter of Ardie Armiger of Ellicott City and the late Wade H. Williams, Mrs. Prout was born in Baltimore on Nov. 21, 1949.
She retired on April 30 after 27 years of federal service as a budget analyst with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Among the positions she held was secretary to the chairman of the FDIC from 1988 to 1991.
Mrs. Prout was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in West River. She was very skilled in home decorating.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 29 years, G. Edward Prout; her son, Henry E. Herrick III of Winchester, Va.; her brother, Wade H. Williams Jr. of Ellicott City; and her sister, Mary Ellen Debes of Mount Airy.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Elwood Sorgnit
Elwood Carl "Woody" Sorgnit, 63, of Bowie, died of cancer July 5, 2002 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born April 5, 1939, in Annapolis, Mr. Sorgnit graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1957. He attended the Air Force Tech School at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi and the University of Maryland while serving in the Air Force Security Service. Subsequently he was a finance clerk at the Postal Service in Annapolis.
From 1964 to 1970 he was an experimental engineer for the Illinois Institute of Technology's Research Institute at the Electromagnetic Compatibility Analysis Center in Annapolis.
From 1971 to 1976 he was sales manager for Boat Transit Inc. in Newport Beach, Calif.
In 1974 he handled the move of the America's Cup challenger, The Intrepid, from San Diego to Brantford, Conn.
From 1976 to 1987, he was a captain and ocean operator for Texas Crewboats Inc. in Freeport, Texas. As a Coast Guard licensed professional skipper, he captained ocean-going vessels serving offshore drilling and pumping rigs through the Gulf of Mexico. He was responsible for maintaining multimillion-dollar vessels in sea conditions at all times.
He was credited with one sea rescue and an oil rig evacuation of 40 people under hazardous pre-hurricane conditions.
Then he was an academic counselor for the DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago, and for the past 12 years was self-employed as a freelance captain and skipper.
He was a member of American Legion Post 7 and the Fleet Reserve Club, and a former member of Toastmasters International and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His interests included football, lacrosse, reading, bowling, boating, sailing, riding and physical fitness.
Surviving are two children, Jon Sorgnit of Florida and Debra Connolly of Riva; three grandchildren; his mother, Barbara A. Sorgnit of Crofton; and his companion, Karen Cannon of the home. He was the son of the late Elwood Carl Sorgnit Sr.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.

Hazel Birner
Hazel S. Birner, 90, of Severna Park, died of natural causes July 13, 2002 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center at Marley Neck in Glen Burnie after a long illness.
A homemaker, Mrs. Birner was born Nov. 6, 1911, and raised in Nauvoo, Ala. She previously lived in Hanover, Pa., where she was a member of a Bible study group. She also resided in Baltimore and Linthicum and had worked as a nanny. Her interests included reading.
The widow of Joseph Birner, she is survived by two sons, Joseph Birner of Severna Park and Thomas A. Birner of Pasadena; and one grandson.
Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Services and burial are private.
