Shirley Pippin
Shirley D. Jeffers Pippin, 75, of Severna Park, died July 17, 2002 of heart failure at North Arundel Hospital.
Mrs. Pippin was born and raised in Springfield, Ill. She served as a Navy WAVE during World War II.
In 1949 she was married
and traveled extensively throughout the world with her family and husband during his military career. They came to Glen Burnie in the early 1960s and to Severna Park in 1988.
She was a retired analyst with the National security Agency.
During the 1980s she was a senior champion golfer and an avid bowler. She was an active member of the Arnold Senior Center and an excellent dancer. In recent years she enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and playing cards. Mrs. Pippin also was a huge Frank Sinatra fan, her family said.
Her husband, William Allen Pippin, died in 1997. Her son, Kenneth Dean Pippin, died in 1973.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Dudley of Severna Park and Gail Melton of Crownsville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Jeffers of Springfield, Ill.; and three sisters, Faye Likes of Stonington, Ill., Patricia Barks of Sherman, Texas, and Jo Ann Wade of Fort Bragg, Calif.
Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow followed by funeral services at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Burial will be private.

Albert Ricks
Albert R. Ricks, an aviation pioneer who retired as a captain at United Airlines at the beginning of the jet age, died of natural causes July 17, 2002 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park. He was 96.
The youngest of nine children, Mr. Ricks was born in 1906 in the District of Columbia where he attended elementary school with classmate and vocalist Kate Smith. He graduated from Central High School.
As a teen-ager, he avidly followed the exploits of America's World War I aces and, after paying $5 for a ride in an early airplane, determined that he would pursue a career in flying.
He took lessons and received his pilot's license, then bought a Fleetwing, an open cockpit bi-plane, which he kept at the former Hybla Valley Airfield in Alexandira, Va. In order to gain sufficient flying time to obtain a commercial license, he gave flying lessons.
Following service in the Marine Corps, he was hired by the newly formed Eastern Air Lines as a co-pilot in 1936. Five years later in 1941, he joined the former Pennsylvania Central Airlines, predecessor of Capitol Airlines, which was later acquired by United Airlines.
He flew DC-3 airliners from old Hoover Field, the present location of the Pentagon, and landed the first commercial plane at the newly opened National Airport, now Reagan National Airport, in 1941. Over the course of his commercial flying career, Mr. Ricks flew the DC-3, the DC-4, the Viscount and the Lockheed Constellation.
During World War II, he ferried cargo over the North Atlantic for the U.S. Air Transport Command from a base at Goose Bay, Labrador.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Beulah Compton Ricks; two sons, Albert W. Ricks of Vero Beach, Fla., a retired American Airlines captain, and Jay E. Ricks of Arlington, Va.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements at St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church are incomplete.
James Bramble IV
James Lloyd Bramble IV, 18, of Severna Park, died July 17, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1984, in Bethesda, Mr. Bramble was raised in Severna Park where he attended Severna Park High School. He enjoyed the outdoors, swimming and fishing, music and weightlifting.
Surviving are his parents, James L. "Trey" Bramble III of Severna Park and Julie A. Norfolk of Arnold; his grandparents, Margaret Q. and James L. Bramble II of Severna Park, Robert Fields of Baltimore and Eleanor Moen of Grasonville; and two sisters, Erin and Molly Norfolk of Arnold.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Cypress Creek Road and Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial will be private.

Magdalene Edwards
Magdalene Edwards, 75, of Odenton, died of cancer July 17, 2002 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Mrs. Edwards was born June 5, 1927, in Hungary, and was the daughter of the late Konrad and Katharina Frost.
She was a homemaker who was active with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Howard Turner American Legion Post. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Odenton.
Mrs. Edwards volunteered with the American Red Cross while living in Germany. Known as a very caring person, she enjoyed visiting people in nursing homes. She was an avid bingo player and liked flea markets.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyn V. Edwards. She is survived by one daughter, Katherine Edwards, and one son, Ralph John Edwards, both of Odenton; one brother, Adam Frost, and one sister, Eva Shremph, both of Canada; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel at the Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville followed by burial. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills.

Karen Hines
Karen Elaine Hines, 42, died suddenly July 17, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1960, in Maryland, Miss Hines formerly lived in Ferndale and then at Langton Green in Annapolis. She attended special schools in Anne Arundel County and the Maryland School for the Blind as well as the Providence Center for 12 years. She lived at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold for the past five years.
She previously attended Ferndale United Methodist Church. Her interests included music and singing.
Surviving are her parents, Wilbert "Bill" and Vivian Hines of Glen Burnie, and her brother, David Hines of Elkridge. She was the sister of the late Valerie Lynn Hines.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Singleton Funeral Home, 1 Second Ave. SW, Glen Burnie, where services will be at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.

Howard Kennedy
Howard Edward "Ken" Kennedy, 81, of Annapolis and previously of Franklin Manor in Churchton and Suitland, died of heart failure July 17, 2002 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 3, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., Mr. Kennedy was a pharmacist's mate first class in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he went to the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and wasa geography major.
He worked as a civilian oceanographer for the Navy Oceanographic Office.
He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist in Annapolis, where he was an usher and maintenance chairman, first reader and former board member.
He also was a member of the Lions Club in Galesville, a square dancer with the Square Dealers dance club and a member of a Minneapolis Masonic lodge. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture.
In 1946 he married
Vernetta R. Kennedy.
Also surviving are two sons, Ronald E. Kennedy of Baltimore and Steven J. Kennedy of Owings Mills; one daughter, Julia Ann Johnson-Briggs of Walker, Minn.; one sister, Majel Freed of Arizona; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Sharon Dee Kennedy and the brother of the late John S. Kennedy.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Private burial is planned.
