Ziad Salam
Ziad Jamil Salam, 55, a resident of Cape St. Claire and previously of Annapolis, died of lung cancer July 28, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Salam was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on Dec. 14, 1946. He attended the Lycee Francais in 1965 and l'Ecole des Beaux-Artes in Paris in 1972. In 1996 he attended architectural technology classes at Anne Arundel Community College.
He was the proprietor of Archi-Tech, a design and construction firm in Annapolis from 1990 to the present. From 1989 to 1992, he was the construction manager with the Khou Corp.
Mr. Salam was a member of the Annapolis Islamic community. He was a Master Mason with Junior Stewart of Patmos Lodge 70. He also was a talented artist.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Catherine M. Salam; two sons, Arek Ziad Salam of the home and Dawud Ziad Salam of Columbia; one daughter, Mariam Ziad Salam of the home; his mother, Nour Salam of Ryadh, Saudi Arabia; two brothers, Issam Jamil Salam of Ryadh and M. J. Salam of Baltimore; three sisters, Ismat Bousade of Auckland, New Zealand, Sarwat Jamil Salam of Paris and Mona Rahily of Casablanca, Morocco.
A memorial service will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse, 1223 River Bay Road in Cape St. Claire. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
Shlomit Shalvi
Shlomit Shtofer Shalvi, 61, of Crofton, died July 29, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness with cancer.
The daughter of the late Aharon Shtofer and Sara Danzig Shtofer, Mrs. Shalvi was born in Peta-Tikva, Israel, on Oct. 30, 1940. She attended Oranim Teacher's Seminary in Israel and then entered military service with the Israeli Defense Force, serving two years in radio communications. She then began teaching school in Israel.
After her marriage to Sidney Shlomo Shalvi on Dec. 10, 1964, they moved from Tel Aviv to the Beersheba area of Israel where she taught while her husband worked as an engineer. In August 1967, they moved to New York City. An artist, she taught arts and crafts, Hebrew and Jewish history in local synagogues.
In 1975 they moved to Stamford, Conn., and in 1978 to Crofton, where they continued their same occupations.
Mrs. Shalvi was a member of Congregation Kneseth Israel. Her interests included arts and crafts, gardening, travel and ceramics.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Doron Shalvi of Bethesda and Jonathan Shalvi of Crofton; one daughter, Sharon Shalvi of Crofton; one brother, Avinoam Shtofer of Natanya, Israel; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday at Kneseth Israel Synagogue, 1125 Spa Road, with burial in Kneseth Israel Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home.
The family will be in mourning at 1872 Squire Court, Crofton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
Dorothy Welch
Dorothy Frances Welch, 78, of North Beach and previously of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Riverdale, died July 28, 2002 at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.
Known as "Dottie" and "Dot, " Mrs. Welch was born March 26, 1924, in Washington, D.C., and was the daughter of the late Walter and Edna Williams.
She worked for the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association from 1960 to 1984.
She was a member of the Auxiliary of Stallings-Williams American Legion Post 206 in Chesapeake Beach. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards and taking cruises.
Her husband, Joseph Patrick Welch, died Aug. 1, 1967.
Surviving are two sons, Patrick Joseph Welch of Grasonville and Michael Albert Welch of Shady Side; one daughter, Kathleen Welch Derricott of King George, Va.; one sister, Elizabeth Ruefly of West River; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Colleen Welch and the sister of the late Hazel Williams.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River.

Melvin Dove
Melvin Dove, 85, a resident of Frankford, Del., and previously of Davidsonville, died of cancer July 31, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Dove was born April 24, 1917, in Annapolis, and was a farmer in the Birdsville area of the county.
He was a member of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fox hunting and raising goats.
In 1983 he was married
to Virgie Ashley Dove.
Also surviving are one daughter, Betty Hall of Millsboro, Del.; two brothers, Ben Dove of Missouri and Ridgely Dove of Annapolis; one sister, Charlotte Beech of Florida; and four grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Fuenral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville, where services will be at noon Monday. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery.
James Higdon
James "Jimmy" S. Higson, 80, of Lothian, died of pneumonia Aug. 1, 2002 at the Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park.
Mr. Higdon was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Catherine Walker Higdon and James S. Higson Sr. He served in the Army during World War II as a gun crewman and truck driver.
Following his military service, he was employed by the former Woodward and Lothrop department stores, driving deliveries for 40 years.
He lived in Temple Hills for 35 years and moved to Anne Arundel County in 1994.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mable Brotherton Higdon; one son, James "Jay" Higdon of Colelge Park; one daughter, Regina Smith of Accokeek; one sister, Gertrude Lightsey of Deltona, Fla.; and one grandchild.
Visitation and funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Raymond-Wood Funeral Home in Dunkirk at 10684 Southern Maryland Blvd. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Cheltenham at 3 p.m.

Patricia Kenny
Patricia Ann "Patty" Kenny, 41, of Riva and formerly of California and Georgia, died July 31, 2002 at her home. The cause of death was not available.
Miss Kenny was born Aug. 11, 1960, in Torrance, Ga., and graduated from Southern High School in 1978. She worked as an office manager with various construction firms.
She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed travel, going to the beach and reading.
Surviving are her mother, Hazel E. Kenny of Riva; one brother, John Kenny of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Paula Kayton of Riva and Pam Napolillo of Sykesville; two nephews and a niece.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will follow. Burial will be private.

Robert Feldman
Robert J. Feldman, 91, a retired administrative law judge for the U.S. Labor Department, died of congestive heart failure Aug. 1, 2002 at the Casey House in Rockville.
A resident of Washington, D.C., and formerly of Annapolis, Judge Feldman was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1911. He graduated from the University of Michigan and in 1934 from Harvard Law School. He attended the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev., in 1976.
He entered private law practice in New York. After serving in the Navy as a communications officer during World War II, he returned to the law, clerking for Judge Edgar Nathan and then litigating on behalf of clients. Judge Feldman was one of the first entertainment lawyers, with clients such as Allan Dumont and Leonard Bernstein.
In 1936 he was married
to the former Beatrice Weil, an arts and entertainment columnist for The Capital, who died in 1994.
He is survived by a daughter, Winnie Feldman-Lindauer of Bethesda.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Joseph Gawler's Sons Inc. funeral home in Washington, D.C.
