SHIRLEY F. STEM
Shirley Fern Stem, 78, Oakland, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at her residence.
Born Jan. 16, 1929, in Westminster, she was a daughter of the late William “Dick” and Mabel (Myers) Stonesifer. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey A. Stem; and by her granddaughter, Shekinah Hamrick.
Mrs. Stem was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Oakland, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving is her husband, Clarence Stem, Oakland; seven sons, Gregory Stem, Hanover, Pa., Michael Stem and Thomas Stem, both of Oakland, Karl Stem, Gormania, W.Va., Kenneth Stem, Martinsburg, Scott Stem, Palo Alto, Calif., and John Stem of Berryville, Va.; seven daughters, Matha Hayhurst and Kathy Mattingly, both of Oakland, Cynthia Stem, Mt. Storm, W.Va., Cheryl Yommer, Mtn. Lake Park, Sheila Hetrick, Martinsburg, Debora Hamrick, Hagerstown, and Vicky Hamrick, Carolina, W.Va.; one sister, June Mackley, York, Pa.; 30 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held today, Thursday, July 26, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Don Parson as celebrant.
Interment followed in Garrett Memorial Gardens.

CLYDE A. LILLER SR.
Clyde A. Liller Sr., 80, Oakland, died Monday, July 23, 2007, at his home.
Born on Dec. 18, 1926, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Errice O. and Mary B. (Moon) Liller. He was also preceded in death by one son, Clyde A. Liller Jr.; five brothers, Robert Liller, Irven Liller, Elmer Liller, Max Liller, and Delbert Liller; and one sister, Jenny Ruth Liller.
He was a member of the New Beginnings Fellowship and a former member of the Rosedale United Pentecostal Church, where he drove for the bus ministry for 20 years and taught Sunday school for 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a retired farmer and was a carpenter for the Oakland Lumber Co. He worked for the Island Creek Coal Co. from 1964 to 1989 and was a member of Local #2478, UMWA.
He is survived by his wife, Vesta V. "Dolly" (Zimmerman) Liller; two daughters, Sharon Gregory, New Windsor, and Angela Kave, McHenry; three sons, Roy Liller, Glen Gardner, and Russell Liller and Jeffrey Liller, both of Oakland; three sisters, Clara Weeks, Lucinda Shaffer, and Bertha Thayer, all of Loch Lynn Heights; one brother, Ralph "Gene" Liller, Oakland; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Thursday, July 26, with Rev. Shirland Hardman officiating.
Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oakland.
Military honors were accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans’ organizations in southern Garrett County.

KAREN J. THOMAS
Karen Joyce Thomas, 46, Bel Air, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2007, to be with the Lord Jesus and receive his gracious gift of eternal love and everlasting peace.
Karen was a pharmacist and co-owner of National Pharmacy in LaVale.
Karen's life on Earth was representative of her beauty, for she never knew a stranger. She enjoyed sharing her expertise in pharmacy and her professionalism in trying to help the sick, and she constantly sought new treatments to help the infirm. Even when there seemed to be no hope for some, she still had a beacon of light to help alleviate the darkness of illness, fears, and doubt.
One of her great loves was playing classical piano. She excelled in any endeavor she attempted. Karen also greatly loved animals, especially French bulldogs, her favorite breed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Colleen Elizabeth (Rexrode) Rinard.
She is survived by her husband, Brad Edward Thomas, Bel Air, formerly of Garrett County; her stepson, Samuel; her father, George William Rinard; one sister, Anna "Jeannie" Smith and husband David, San Antonio, Texas, and their sons Joshua and Micah, both Naval Academy graduates; and two brothers, William James "Bill" Rinard, his wife Carmen, and their children Casey and Kelly, all of Annapolis, and George "Brad" Rinard, his wife Paulett, and their children Eric and Kevin, all of Frostburg.
The community has lost a true friend. The family wishes for everyone to keep them in their prayers.

Interment was held in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
CHARLES B. CONN
Charles Benjamin "Ben" Conn, 81, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Friday, July 20, 2007, at his home.
Born on March 9, 1926, in Point Marion, Pa., he was the son of the late Harold and Louisa (Ramsay) Conn. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marion Blaney.
A proud veteran of World War II, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1944 and served as a nose-gunner on a B-24 Bomber with the 461st Bomb Group, 764th Bomb Squadron, and 15th Air Force.
He attended Coyne Electrical School and was employed by Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio, until 1956.
He also owned and operated a dairy farm near Terra Alta for many years and retired in 1999.
He was Protestant by faith and was a member of the building committee of the now Faith United Methodist Church and a dedicated worker for the church.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lou (Taylor) Conn; two sisters, Marjorie Grow, Akron, and Sara Jane Blake, Wads-worth, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At his request, his body was donated to West Virginia University, and there will be no memorial service.
MARY L. ROSE
Mary L. Rose, 76, Barberton, Ohio, formerly of Oakland, died Monday, July 23, 2007, at the Hospice of Visiting Nurses Service, Copley, Ohio.
Born on Jan. 9, 1931, in Turner Douglas, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late George W. Alexander and Grace (Bowser) (Alexander) Martin. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Freda Stout; and one brother, Russell Alexander.
She is survived by her husband of 26 years, James R. Rose Sr.; one son, Wayne Alexander, Oakland; two stepdaughters, Sherry Rose, Akron, Ohio, and Becky Miller, Clinton, Ohio; two stepsons, James F. Rose Jr., Medina, Ohio, and Jonas Rose, Ky.; four sisters, Gladys Flesher, Grafton, W.Va., Winona Alexander, Oakland, Norma Gallagher, Morgantown, W.Va., and Juanita Shaffer, Mtn. Lake Park; two brothers, Dayton Alexander, Aurora, W.Va., and Howard Alexander, Smithsburg; two grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held today, Thursday, July 26, with Pastor Robert Webb officiating.
Interment was in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
ALEXI D. FRATZ-ORR
On Saturday, July 21, 2007, in Florida, Alexi Don Fratz-Orr, Oakland, became Jesus’ Little Lamb in Heaven. Lexi was the 9-year-old daughter of Richard B. Orr and Julie Fratz-Orr of Oakland.
She was born Oct. 6, 1997, in Cumberland.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by five brothers and sisters, Derek Fratz-Orr, Nick Fratz-Orr, Jessica Seib and husband Daniel, Richard Orr II, and Erin Strubin and husband Rusty; niece Samantha Gittere; nephews Brycen Seib and Bradley Strubin; and her maternal grandmother, Anna Mary Fratz, McHenry.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, F. Robert and Mary Lee Orr and her maternal grandfather, Donald H. Fratz.
Lexi was a member of Hope and Understanding for God’s Special Children (HUGS.org).
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Accident (McHenry).
A service was conducted today, Thursday, July 26, at Zion Lutheran Church, Accident, with the Rev. Keith Clow officiating.
Interment was held in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

HOBERT O. McROBIE
Hobert O. "Mac" McRobie, 90, Hurst, Texas, passed away Friday, July 13, 2007, at Harris Methodist Hospital, Arlington, Texas.
Born Nov. 8, 1916, in Oakland, he was a son of the late William H. "Harry" and Bertha E. (Wilt) McRobie. He was also preceded in death by his son, Roger K. McRobie; his first wife, Melissa K. (Wolfe) McRobie; daughter Loretta Ann (McRobie) Vandergriff; and two sisters, Vera Labella (McRobie) Brant and Frances E. (McRobie) Peck.
He was a graduate of Oakland High School, class of 1934, and a member of Ferndale Baptist Church.
After graduation, he was employed as a coal miner in Crellin with his father. After his first marriage in May 1939, he worked on the Bear Mountain Parkway in New York.
Later he and his brother in-law, Harry Wolfe, found employment at different drop forge shops in Canton and Cleveland, Ohio, moving on to Cornell Forge in Chicago, Ill.
After many years in Chicago he gave up his position as a hammer man at the forge and opened a Gulf service station in Florida, in partnership with his Uncle Arthur Calhoun.
Upon receiving a call from an old friend from Cornell Forge, he was offered a position as assistant shop foreman with Trinity Forge in Hurst and moved his family there in 1949. In that position, he drew diagrams for parts that were made, and he monitored the parts as they were hammered out on the forge.
He used to say, "It takes a certain touch to design a die that uses less steel and produces a part that’s true to form."
After 40 years of service Mac retired as vice president of Trinity Forge in 1989. He was a 50-year paid-up member of Smithfield Masonic Lodge #455 in Hurst.
He enjoyed reading Zane Grey stories and traveling the West where it all happened. He also loved sharing stories of his past and telling friends about Garrett County.
He is survived by his wife, Amalene (Johnson) (Todd), whom he married in 1969; one brother, Raymond McRobie, Fairfax, Va.; son-in-law Jim Vandergriff, Hurst; daughter Kathy L. (McRobie) and husband Monte Meadows, North Richland Hills, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Moore Funeral Home, Arlington, where a service was held Wednesday, July 18, 2007, with Dr. Brian Quinn officiating.
Interment was in the Moore Cemetery, Arlington.
A Masonic memorial service was held at the gravesite.
