Sylvia Jane Johnson
LAUREL -- Sylvia Jane Johnson, 69, of Laurel died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Chancellor Care Center in Delmar.
She was born in Laurel to the late Herman and Alberta Collins.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She delighted in watching her children and grandchildren at various sporting events. She was loved by all and will be missed very much.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laurel Chapter 18, where she had served as past worthy matron. She was a member of the Laurel Alumni Association and American Legion Post 19 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Millard C. Johnson Jr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Johnson and Molly of Delmar and Millard Johnson III and Debbie of Laurel; a son, Dennis Johnson of Laurel; a daughter, Teresa Johnson of Laurel; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Helen Collins of Salisbury; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., beginning with a service by OES Laurel Chapter 18. The Rev. Lemuel Hudson will officiate. Services will be at Short Funeral Home in Laurel. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Odd Fellows cemetery in Laurel.

Claudette H. Gibbs
DELMAR -- Claudette H. Gibbs, 65, of Delmar died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at her home.
Her parents were the late Harrison and Julia Jones.
Mrs. Gibbs worked as a nurse's aide. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Delmar, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She also enjoyed camping.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Gibbs of Delmar; a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin Lynn and Gail Gibbs of Eden; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Lee and Jeff LeBlanc of Laurel; three brothers, Roger Jones of Princess Anne, Walter Jones of Delmar and Fred Jones of Salisbury; a sister, Flora White of Snow Hill; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church on East State Street in Delmar, with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in St. Stephen's cemetery in Delmar.

Otis Carl Brown
BALM, Fla. -- Otis Carl Brown, 75, passed away in Florida on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.
Born in Salisbury on Nov. 6, 1929, he was the son of Otis Carlton and Mary Sally Brown.
He graduated from Wicomico High School in 1947. He married
his bride of 53 years, Nancy, at Rockawalkin Church. He was manager of Kinney Shoes on Main Street in Salisbury in the early 1960s. He came back to Salisbury in 1968 to open the Kinney Shoe Store at the brand new Salisbury Mall, where he worked until he moved his family to Florida in 1976. He was a member of First Nazarene Church in Salisbury. In Florida, Otis retired as supervisor at the Tampa Tribune in 1991. He and his wife loved to travel.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; two children, Brenda and Montgomery Parry and Kenneth Brown; two grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel; and several nieces and nephews.
Otis will always be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.
Friends and family may visit Bounds Funeral Home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.
Daniel Lee Stewart
SALISBURY -- Daniel Lee Stewart, 60, of Delmar died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rimersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Charles Stewart and Hazel Connor Stewart.
Mr. Stewart attended the North Salisbury Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was employed by Short's Marine in Millsboro as a parts manager for 20 years, retiring in 2004, having enjoyed the friendship of many co-workers and clients during that time. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was an avid boating and automotive enthusiast.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Candida Stewart; his children, Lee Kevin and Amy LeNiece Stewart of Milton, Michael John Stewart of New York and Michelle Andrea Stewart and Siegfried Doerrer of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Frantz Doerrer and Kira Doerrer; two brothers, Willard Stewart of Northeast, Md., and Larry Stewart of Blackbird, Del.; two sisters, Charylene Myers and Gloria Burns, both of Sligo, Pa.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Kenneth L. Sensenig will officiate. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Henlopen Memorial Park in Milton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Alington Road, Bethesda, Md. 20014.

John H. Clarke Jr.
POCOMOKE CITY -- John H. "Jack" Clarke Jr., 79, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born on Aug. 11, 1925, in Pocomoke City, he was a son of the late Ruth Young Clarke and John H. Clarke Sr.
Mr. Clarke graduated from Pocomoke High School in 1942 and, after serving in the Navy during World War II, graduated from Western Maryland College in 1948. He began his career as a mathematician for NAOTS in Chincoteague and then transferred to NASA in 1959, retiring in 1980 with a total of 36 years of government service.
Mr. Clarke was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a longtime active member of the Pocomoke City Lions Club, where he had currently been serving as treasurer. He was also a 50-year member of American Legion Post 93 in Pocomoke City.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah "Sue" Gordy Clarke; two sons, John Thomas Clarke and his wife, Nicki, of Snow Hill and Steven Clarke of Mt. Holly Springs, Pa.; six grandchildren, Brandi Houlihan and her husband, Mark, of Salisbury, Thomas, John S., James, Andrew and Sarah Clarke, all of Snow Hill.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church in Pocomoke City, officiated by the Rev. Russell Lehman. Interment will be private.

Rowley W. Mears
CRISFIELD -- Rowley W. Mears, 74, of Crisfield died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Crisfield on Sept. 2, 1930, he was a son of the late George Newell and Lillie Mae Mears.
He worked for many years at the former Crisfield Sportswear making patterns and was the owner for many years of the former Mears Television Service. He enjoyed woodworking crafts, especially making lighthouses, and he also enjoyed fixing electronics.
He is survived by three children, Debbie Ennis and her husband, Richard, of Quantico, Dawn Crockett of Crisfield and Darryl Mears of Lewes; three grandchildren, William Betts and his wife, Sheila, of Preston, Dawn Leslie Crockett of Crisfield and Nicole Bozman and her husband, Eric, of Delmar; four great-grandchildren, Alexis Betts, Cody Bozman, Cameron Bozman and Kyle King; three nieces, Barbara Tawes, Joellen Shanks and Karen Elliott; special friends, Benson Tawes and Bob Caraway; and his very special companion and friend, Myrtle Sterling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Adams and Virginia "Gin" Evans; a brother, Donald Mears, who died in infancy; a great-grandchild, Brandon Betts; two nephews, Donald Adams and Denny Evans; and a son-in-law, Lester Crockett Jr.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Bob Daniels will officiate. Interment will follow in Asbury cemetery in Crisfield.

William Woodrow Hodges Sr.
SALISBURY -- William Woodrow "Woody" Hodges Sr., 75, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Baltimore on Aug. 6, 1929, he was the son of the late John Hodges Sr. and Florence N. Hodges.
He is survived by one son, William Woodrow Hodges Jr., and his wife, Anne, of Annapolis; and two daughters, Kimberly Thomas and her husband, Steve, of Salisbury and Pamela Cullen and her husband, Jeff, of Salisbury. He is also survived by two sisters, Doris Malone and Annabelle Ward, both of Salisbury; as well as seven grandchildren, Eric and Michael Hodges, Blaine Patrick, Bobby Leath III, and Jamie, Jason and Justin Green; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Lindsey and Madison; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hodges worked for the city of Salisbury, Wood Richardson Roofing and Sheet Metal, and retired from National Biscuit Co. He owned and operated two successful grocery businesses, one in Salisbury and one in St. Stephens.
Woody played many years in the Central Shore Baseball League and won the hearts of Willards and Pocomoke City fans. He was known for his strong bat and superb skills at first base. Woody also spent many years in the City Industrial Softball League playing for Dulaney's, Castleberg's, Eastern Shore Equipment and Salisbury Spring Works. All were championship teams. Woody also spent one season with the Pittsburgh Pirates AA farm club in Florida. He also coached Little League baseball with his teammate, Sanders Carey, at City Park. He was a member of the Eastern Shore Softball Hall of Fame, the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame, American Legion Post 64, Tony Tank Tribe 149 and Moose Family Center 654.
A funeral service will be held tonight at 7 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the service.
