Alfred Lynn Sylvester
OCEAN CITY -- Alfred Lynn Sylvester, 70, of Ocean City, and formerly of St. Mary's County, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
He was the son of Alfred J. and the late Helen K. Sylvester; loving father of William R. Sylvester, Karen J. Anderson, Stacy S. Frere and the late Martin L. Sylvester; and the devoted companion of Gail Filyo. He is also survived by a sister, Innes Breeden, and nine grandchildren.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home at 8125 Southern Maryland Blvd. in Owings, Md., where services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Cedar Hill cemetery in Suitland, Md.

Franklin G. Rantz
SNOW HILL -- Franklin G. Rantz departed this earth Monday, Jan. 10, 2005.
He was born Dec. 8, 1925, the son of Jeanette and the grandson of John and Mary Rantz.
Frank grew up in Pocomoke City, where he attended Pocomoke High School. Following high school he joined the Navy, where he served from 1943 to 1945, witnessing the Battle of Normandy as a gunner on a Liberty Ship. He was an observer of the planes in World War II and the impact gave him a lifelong passion to fly. He obtained his pilot's license Oct. 22, 1951. Beyond his love of flight, the greatest joy in his life was his family, especially his grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, compassionate heart and his ability to make a friend no matter where he went.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; their children, Gary Rantz and his wife, Joyce, of Delmar, Nicki Clarke and her husband, John Thomas (T.C.) of Snow Hill and Sandy Siebenaller and her husband, Jim, of Barnegat, N.J.; 14 grandchildren, Christy Jones and her husband, Tracy, of Salisbury, Nicole Koester and her husband, Tracy, of Eden, Brandi Houlihan and her husband, Mark, of Salisbury, Thomas, John Steven, James, Andrew and Sarah Clarke of Snow Hill, Aubrey and Ryan Siebenaller of New Jersey, Daniel Smith of Parsonsburg, Zack, Jonathan and Jacob Rantz of Delmar; and eight great-grandchildren, Erica, Brooke and Matthew Jones, Megan, Nathan and Cole Koester, Charlotte Catapano and baby boy Houlihan on the way.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 94 in Princess Anne.

Preston James "Jim" Carey
BERLIN -- Preston James "Jim" Carey was born May 25, 1930, and died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at home with his family after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Tami Oltman; his son-in-law, Murray Oltman; a daughter-in-law, Eva Carey; and three grandsons, Jason Carey, Zachary Oltman and Nathan Oltman; and his brother, Dale Carey. He is also survived by many members of his family including Myrna and Ronnie Dyson, Bill Carey Jr., Leisa and Perry Jones; his in-laws, Jeanette Grise, Eva Baker, Leah Dorey, and Donald and Diane Williams and Rae Williams; as well as, many, many loved nieces and nephews.
Jim was a son of Preston and Jennie Carey, both deceased. He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Dean Carey, who died in 1998; the love of his life -- his wife for more than 54 years, Betty Carey, who preceded him last summer; and his brother, Bill Carey Sr.
He was born and raised in Berlin and was a 1947 graduate of Buckingham High School in Berlin. In 1948, Jim joined the Navy, where he served on the U.S.S. Bairoko (CVE 115) and entered Naval Reserve after his initial tour of duty. Jim returned to Berlin and married
Betty Jean Williams on Jan. 13, 1950.
In 1952, during the Korean War, Jim returned to active duty and served upon the amphibious force flagship U.S.S. Taconic (AGC-17). He received National Defense and Navy Service Occupation medals. After an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1953, he again returned to Berlin.
Jim joined the Maryland State Police in 1958, served for 22 years and retired as a sergeant in 1980. While a state police officer, he operated amphibious rescue vehicles, was on the K-9 Corp with "Rebel" and worked in the Easton, Salisbury and Berlin Barracks. He received a Superintendent's Commendation and Governor's Citation.
In 1976, Jim joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, served in Maryland and Florida units and was called up again for active duty during Desert Storm, where he worked the Port of Charleston. Jim was a chief petty officer when he retired from the Coast Guard Reserve in 1992.
Jim and Betty owned Pine Rest Cottages in West Ocean City and then lived in Berlin for 10 years before moving to Pine Island, Fla. Jim and Betty lived in Pine Island for 22 years before relocating back to the Fenwick area in 2001.
Jim was a member of the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department; American Legion Post 123 in Berlin; American Legion Post 136 in Pine Island; VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View; Elks Lodge 2781 in Pine Island; Moose Lodge 2542 in Sussex County; Moose Lodge 1843 in Pine Island; USCG Chief Petty Officers Association; and the Maryland State Police Alumni Association
Jim loved his wife, his grandsons and his family; crossword puzzles, household carpentry projects (he was an avid handyman), cooking, boating, crabbing, fishing, eating seafood and enjoyed the company of his many good friends. Jim served his country, community and family throughout his life -- he will be dearly missed.
The family invites family and friends to join us in a memorial service on Friday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin, where a calling hour will be between 1 and 2 p.m.

Ralph Alexander Broughton
SALISBURY -- Ralph "Sambo" Alexander Broughton, 56, of Collins Street in Salisbury died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Patchogue, N.Y., he was a son of the late Roy and Gladys Waters Broughton. His aunt, Louise Polk of Snow Hill, reared him. His late wife, Sylvia Leggett Broughton, died in September 2003.
He was employed with Perdue Farms Inc. and was formerly employed with Tyson's and as a long distance truck driver for various companies.
His survivors include five children, Angela King and her husband, Marcus, Roger Leggett and his wife, Avis, and Michelle Broughton, all of Salisbury; Vanessa Roach and her husband, Duane, of Magnolia, Del., and Taeka Leggett of Melfa; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Roy Broughton Jr. of New Castle, Del.; two sisters, Shirley Bratten of Millsboro and Betty Broughton of Delmar; three sisters-in-law; several aunts; one uncle; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury, where friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again Friday, one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Green Acres Memorial Park in Salisbury.
Services are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury.
Marguerite Jackson Jones
VIENNA -- Marguerite Jackson Jones, 80, of Ocean Gateway in Vienna died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Sarah, Margaret & Mollie's Place in Salisbury.
Born in Vienna, she was a daughter of the late Fred D. Jackson and Bessie Morris Jackson. Her late husband, Russell Jones, died in December 1964.
She retired from the former Bogash Sewing Factory in Hurlock. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna, where she was an usher and member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a former member of the Household of Ruth in Sharptown.
Her survivors include two sons, Oliver and his wife, Jacqueline Jackson, of Salisbury and Robert and his wife, Joyce Jackson, of Vienna; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister and two brothers, Catherine Waller of Mardela Springs, Orville and his wife, Marjorie Jackson, of Salisbury and Harold and his wife, Vivian Jackson, of Vienna; one brother-in-law; eight sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna, where friends may call Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to service.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury.
Willie Beatrice Horne Griffin
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- Willie Beatrice Horne Griffin, 91, of Quail Run Road in Elizabeth City died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in the guardian care of Elizabeth City Nursing Home.
Mrs. Griffin was the widow of the late William E. Griffin and daughter of the late Thomas and Suzanna Lucas Horne Culpepper.
She is survived by a stepson, William E. Brown Jr. of Philadelphia; three grandchildren; great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many cousins and a special friend, Ionnie Flemming of Emporia, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted today at noon at St. James Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, N.C. Burial will be in White Marsh Memorial Park cemetery in Ambler, Pa. The procession will leave the funeral home at 9 a.m. for travel to Rocky Mount.

Hazel M. Parks
GEORGETOWN -- Hazel M. Parks, 97, of Georgetown, and formerly of Snow Hill, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Harrison House in Georgetown.
She was born in Snow Hill, the daughter of the late Frederick and Stella (Parsons) Mariner.
She was an assistant secretary for the town of Georegtown. She also owned Park's Restaurant in Georgetown for many years. She enjoyed knitting.
She is survived by a nephew, Gerald and Charlotte Ann Holloway of Snow Hill; three great-nephews, Fred Holloway of Snow Hill, Earl Holloway and wife, Jean, of Newark and Lee Holloway and his wife, Dena, of Snow Hill; one great-niece, Jan Greaser and her husband, Bill, of Snow Hill; and a sister-in-law, Lena Parks of Exmore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Parks, in 1953 and a great-nephew, Glenn Holloway.
A funeral service will be held Friday at noon at Short Funeral Services, 609 Market St. in Georgetown, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Interment will be in Bates cemetery in Snow Hill.
