Clempner, Peter Scott

Peter Scott Clempner, 55, a world class sailor and resident of Annapolis, MD since 1968, died June 5, 2003 at Anne Arundel Medical Center following a short illness.
Mr. Clempner was born December 27, 1947 and raised in New York City. He had a lifelong love of the sea, winning many races as a youth.
Early in his career, he converted Ted Turner's boat Tenacious into an ocean racer which he skippered to several victories.
He is best remembered in this area as skipper of Al VanMeter's Running Tide which won the Bermuda Cup in 1976.
He also skippered Alibi, establishing it as one of the top 10 boats on the Bay. He raced Leading Edge and Air Mail and in 2000 he sailed L'Outrage to win the Key West Race.
Surviving are his wife, Drue Slaughter Clempner, and two children, Scott and Ashley Clempner of the home.
A celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, June 12, 2003 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Church Circle, Annapolis. The family is in the process of establishilg a scholarship fund in his name.

Charles R. Wheeler of Easton, MD died on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Genesis Elder Care-The Pines, Easton, MD. He was 86.
Born January 28, 1917 in Overlea, MD he was the son of the late Charles Merrill and Bertha Macauley Wheeler.
Mr. Wheeler is survived by four children, Charles Wheeler and his wife Judy of Annapolis, MD, Linda Talbert and her husband, Tom of Bromsgrove, England, Michael Wheeler and his wife, Ellen of Winchester, VA and Patricia Hanks and her husband, Peter of Easton, MD; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was predeceased by five sisters.
Services will be private.

Violet D. Thorns of Cordova, MD died on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 89.
Born June 14, 1913 in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late David and Lyda Hart Tyler.

Pickett, Willard

Willard Frances Pickett of Chester, MD died Thursday, June 5, 2003 at her daughter’s home. She was 84.
Born October 30, 1918 in Durham, NC, she was the daughter of the late Alcy Graham Carroll. Willard married
William S. Pickett December 24, 1941. Due to Mr. Pickett’s pursuit of education, they traveled extensively until settling in Seabrook, MD for 32 years where Mrs. Picket was a homemaker. Mr. Pickett preceded her in death in 1988. She then moved to the Eastern Shore in 1998 to be near her family. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and grandson.
She was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church and will always be known for being very giving to others.
Willard is survived by one daughter, Patricia Bellucci of Chester, MD; three grandsons, Dustin Petersen of Harpers Ferry, WV, David Helms of Fayetteville, AR and Louie Bellucci of Chester, MD; two sisters, Mildred Milby of Virginia Beach, VA and Rebecca Carroll of Sierra Vista, AZ; one great grandson, Brayden Thomas Petersen.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Alcy G. Carroll, Jr. and her great grandson, Mason Skylar Petersen.

Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 11:00 AM. Internment will follow at Cheltenham Veteran’s Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Otto, Vernon W.

Vernon W. Otto of Easton, MD, formerly of Glen Burnie, MD died on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 77.
Born May 18, 1926 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph V. and Amelia Miller Otto. During World War II he served in the United States Army. He was employed by Westinghouse in Linthicum, MD until his retirement.
Mr. Otto is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Maher, whom he married
May 5, 1946; a son, Vernon L. Otto and his wife Donna; a daughter, Rhonda Yeates and her husband, Dennis; five grandchildren, Melanie Small and her husband, Keith, Dustin Otto and his wife, Janet, Tana Arruda, Kelly Belcastro and her husband, Steve, and Bretton Otto; a great-granddaughter, Fallyn “Poodle” Belcastro; a sister, Margaret Greif; and a brother, John M. Otto and his wife, Brenda. A brother, Melvin L. Otto is deceased.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 5:00 PM at First Wesleyan Church, Easton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to First Wesleyan Church, 620 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD 21601.

Miller, James Roland

Dr. James Roland Miller of College Park, MD died on Sunday, June 8, 2003 at his home. He was 74 years old.
Born in Millington, Maryland he was the son of the late Roland W. & Edith N. Judefind Miller.
Dr. Miller was the Chairman of Agronomy at the University of MD until his retirement in 1985.
Dr. Miller was awarded scholarships to Washington College and University of MD. He was Phi Kappa Phi-National Honor Society, elected to Sigma XI-Research Honorary. He was also Honorary State Farm Degree, 1960 received for outstanding educational work in area soil testing and soil fertility. He was listed in America Men and Woman of Science, World’s Who’s Who in Science, Who’s Who I the East, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Agriculture, and Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans. Dr. Miller was elected Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy in 1971, he was also Spokesman of the Year Award in Agriculture, 1975, and it was presented by Chevron Chemical Company and Farm Chemical Magazine. He was also elected Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America in 1976. He was presented Award by Potash and Phosphate Institute in Appreciation of Outstanding service to Agriculture in 1976. Dr. Miller was presented Certificate of Appreciation for Contributions to Delaware-Maryland Plant Food Association in 1978. Dr. Miller was appointed by Maryland Secretary of Agriculture to serve on Maryland Gasohol Study Commission in 1979, he was also appointed by the Governor of Maryland to serve on Sewage Sludge Management Commission in 1982, he was also awarded Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland for outstanding service and contributions to the University in 1985. Dr. Miller was presented “Man of the Year” by Maryland Grain Producers Association for outstanding service to Maryland Agriculture in 1988. He was also awarded by the Northeastern Branch of the American Society of Agronomy Career Service award for Outstanding Achievements and Contributions to Agronomy in 1989 and Maryland Turfgrass Association Award in Recognition of Dedication, advancement, and Support of Turfgrass Industry in 1993.
Dr. Miller enjoyed taking cruises, farming and dancing. He was a member of the Vansville Farmers Club.
Dr. Miller was survived by his wife, Patricia M. Miller of 48 years; two daughters, Karla P. Miller of College Park, MD and Marcia S. M. McCarty of Shrewsbury, PA.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Miller was preceded in death by his brother, Loran Judefind Miller in 1994.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. from Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., 370 W. Cypress Street, Millington, Maryland, 21651. Relatives and Friends may call on Thursday, June 12, 2003 from 7:00-9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Asbury Cemetery, Millington, Maryland.

Catherine Doughty Gordon
PERRY HALL, Md. -- Catherine Doughty Gordon, 60, of Perry Hall and formerly of Eden, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at her home in Perry Hall.
Born in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late James and Margaret Doughty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Steven Gordon in 1999.
While living in Eden, Mrs. Gordon was an active member of St. Francis de Sales parish in Salisbury, where she and her husband taught Sunday school for many years. For more than 15 years she worked as an agent for Cooper Insurance in Salisbury. She enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Ladies of Baltimore. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Steven and Claudia Gordon of Baltimore; a daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Thomas Robinson of Salisbury; and a son and his wife, Timothy and Trista Gordon of Parkville; 3 special grandchildren, Nick, Paige and Ana; and a brother and his wife, Jim and Iris Doughty of Tyaskin.
A visitation for family and friends will be held tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Short Funeral Home at 13 E. Grove St. in Delmar. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales in Salisbury. Interment will be in St. Stephens cemetery in Delmar.
