Elder Charles Vernon Morris

DELMAR -- Elder Charles Vernon Morris, 45, son of Sherman A. Morris Sr. and Martena V. Morris, was born in Salisbury on Oct. 28, 1960. He was one of five children. Elder Charles departed this life peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at his home in Delmar.

He graduated from Wicomico Senior High School in Salisbury. He attended Wor-Wic Community College for two years. He was last employed at Filtronic Comtek in Salisbury.

Charles Morris was a former member of St. Paul AME Zion Church in Salisbury. In February 2004, he joined Soul Saving Ministries of the Apostolic Faith Inc. in Salisbury, where the pastor is Prophet C.L. Miles Sr. and also where Elder Charles received the Holy Ghost and was called to be an elder by God. He served on the Ministerial Staff Committee and he was the choir director and a member of the Brotherhood Committee.

Elder Charles leaves to cherish his memory his father and mother; one sister, Darlene Morris of Delmar; three brothers, Sherman Jr., Sherwood and Irvin Morris, all of Salisbury; three aunts, Rebecca Newkirt, Anna Maddox and Magdelene Floyd, all of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. We will all miss Elder Charles and he will forever be in our hearts.

A homegoing service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Greater Higher Hope Temple of the Apostolic Faith, 800 Johnson St. in Salisbury, where a viewing will be held two hours prior to the service.

Service arrangements are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury.

Bernice Stout Elliott

DELMAR -- Bernice Stout Elliott, 85, of Delmar went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, while at her home.

Born in Altus, Okla., on Oct. 25, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John Carl and Bonnie Pearl Duncan Stout. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elliott Jr.

Mrs. Elliott, who had great faith in Jesus Christ, was a member of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle and Immanuel Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Claude Tudor of Coco, Fla., and Bonnie and Jerry Cordy of Austin, Texas; a son and his wife, Paul and Paula Elliott of Parsonsburg; two brothers and their wives, Fred and Kathy Stout of Duke, Okla., and Cecil and Mary Stout of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, John Littleton, James Littleton, Karen Bubar, Debbie Harpool, David Wainwright Jr., Paul Elliott Jr. and Heather Brown; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1514 Old Ocean City Road in Salisbury.

William Robert "Bob" Cannon

DELMAR -- William Robert "Bob" Cannon, age 78, born in Delmar to Marion and Bertha (Parsons) Cannon, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, in Los Angeles.

Bob spent most of his life in the Philadelphia area, where he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, later to become Conrail, as a communications operator for 42 years. In 2001, Bob moved to Marblehead, Mass., to be closer to his sister and her family. Having served in the United States Navy as a seaman first class for two years, he received an honorable discharge in 1948.

Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Beverly (Phillips) and Stephen Pazuk of Marblehead and Los Angeles, and nieces, Cynthia Pazuk and Kathryn (Pazuk) Naficy, her husband, Sam, and children, Nikki and Kamran, all of Los Angeles.

Memorial services will be held in Los Angeles and Marblehead. Burial will take place in the spring at Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, Pa.

Contributions may be made in his name to the American Lung Association or the Marblehead Animal Shelter, Marblehead, Mass. 01945.

Charles M. Wright Jr.

MARDELA SPRINGS -- Charles M. Wright Jr., age 84, of Mardela Springs died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Mardela Springs, he was a son of the late Charles M. Wright Sr. and Blanche Wilson Wright.

Charles was a lifetime member of Snethen United Methodist Church in Mardela Springs. He retired in 1979 after 39 years of service as an insulator at DuPont in Seaford. Since retirement from the plant, he had enjoyed many years of breakfast meetings with other former DuPont employees and rarely missed one.

In the early 1970s, he founded Wright's Market in Mardela Springs, which he actually started out of the back of a pickup truck. He took pleasure in growing produce and being able to work with his family. In addition to his fondness for growing fruits and vegetables, he was also an avid gardener, loved flowers and loved to hunt and fish in his younger days. He and his late wife enjoyed traveling within the United States and also to Europe and other countries. For more than 15 years, he spent his winters at the home he loved in North Port, Fla. Mr. Wright was a member of the Masonic Lodge Temple 170 in Mardela Springs and Tall Cedars, where he and his wife enjoyed and looked forward to going to the dances. The most important thing to him was spending quality time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by a son, Charles M. Wright III and his wife, Nancy, of Mardela Springs; a daughter, Carole Wright Nesbitt and her husband, George L. Nesbitt Jr., of Mardela Springs; three grandchildren, Charles M. Wright IV and his wife, Michelle, Timothy M. Wright and his wife, Theresa, and George L. Nesbitt III and his wife, Donna; three great-grandchildren, Charles M. Wright V, Morgan N. Wright and Garrett W. Wright; three sisters, Nellie Wright Henry, Elizabeth Wright Horner and Marie Wright Phillips-Ruhl; and two brothers, Richard and Edward Wright. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Shockley Wright, who passed in 1997, and two sisters, Dorothy Wright Layton and Louise Wright Ruth.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Short Funeral Home at 13 E. Grove St. in Delmar, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow the service in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Snethen United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, c/o Jan Frey, 4203 Delmar Road, Delmar, Del. 19940.

Ann Hall Valliant Carvel

LAUREL -- Ann Hall Valliant Carvel, age 99, of Laurel died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Born in Church Hill, Md., she was a daughter of the late E.S. and Nellie Hall Valliant.

Mrs. Carvel was a longtime member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel. She was a proud homemaker who was very talented with her handiwork, enjoying needlepoint, embroidery, crewel work and smocking. The clothing and sweaters she made for her children and grandchildren were special to her. She enjoyed spending time with family and was a den mother for the Laurel Cub Scout Pack in the 1940s.

She was an accomplished pianist and was fond of the Steinway baby grand piano that was purchased many years ago. She was very active with the American Cancer Society and led the cancer fundraising in Laurel. She and her husband, former governor of Delaware Elbert N. Carvel, loved spending time at the family farm on the Chesapeake Bay on Kent Island, always looking forward to the 4th of July celebrations with all of her family at the farm. Her love of photography captured many of these family memories.

She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" Carvel Palmer and her husband, Charles, of Millville, Barbara Carvel Krahn of Newark, Del., and Ann Hall House and her husband, David, of Baltimore; a son, Edwin Valliant Carvel of San Francisco; a brother, James W. Valliant of Centreville, Md.; six grandchildren, Lisa Palmer, Drew Palmer, Daphne Soroka, Brooke Palmer, Dylan Palmer and Beatrice Saviola-Wheeler; and eight great-grandchildren, Heather, Leslie, and Katelyn Palmer, Phoebe and Desmond Soroka, Lucy Bull, John Parker Valliant Wheeler and Patrick Christian Carvel Wheeler.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, former Gov. Elbert N. Carvel; a brother, Edwin Stephens Valliant Jr.; and three sisters, Peggy Foreman, Mildred Valliant and Mary Crowther.

A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, Md., on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. David Green will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, PO Box 767, Wilmington, Del. 19899.

Arrangements are being handled by Short Funeral Home of Laurel.

Vernon M. Bailey

MOUNT VERNON -- Vernon M. Bailey, 64, of Pleasantville, N.J., formerly of Mount Vernon, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005. Born in Mount Vernon, he was a son of the late Dennis L. and Matilda Hitch Bailey. He received his education from the Somerset County school system, graduating from Somerset High School.

Vernon was a general contractor. He served as an inspector for the New York Department of Housing and a District Maintenance Supervisor for the Atlantic City Board of Education. He was employed as Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds with TMC Services, Inc. in New York.

He was a member of the Pleasantville Zoning Board, the Democratic Club of Pleasantville, Drywall Tapers and Finishers Local 1976 and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 711.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bailey; a daughter, Lesley Ann White; and siblings, Gloria Bailey, Esther Bailey-Smith, Hazel Bailey-Miller, George W. Bailey and Patricia Bailey.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a wife, Karen; children, Kolet and Kasey of his home, Don Bailey of Philadelphia, Steve Bailey of Syracuse, N.Y., Pamela McGill (Ernest Sr.) of Wilmington and Kim White of Willingboro, N.J.; sisters, Mary Juanita Bailey of Bronx, N.Y., Willamena Foy (Edward) of Irvington, N.J., Nellie Bailey of Bronx and Jenneth Bailey of Baltimore; his mother-in-law, Floretta R. Sutton-Logan (Rev. Ben) of Newport News, Va.; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Gwen Sutton-Omari (Aubrey) of South Orange, N.J., Chester C. Sutton Jr. (Cherie) of Knightdale, N.C., Fred Sutton of Mays Landing, N.J., Teresa Renee Sutton of Atlanta and Verona Sutton-Dunn (Charles) of Las Vegas. Vernon also leaves his grandchildren, Christopher, Ernest Jr., Morgan, Taylor, Kayla, Bailee, Briana, Antwan, Katrina, Geno and Kabrice, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Additionally left to cherish great memories are William Gaines, Vernon's "other" father, "The Clique" Curt, Wayne, Sissy, Melinda, Theodore and many fine friends. Vernon will also be sadly missed by the family pets: dogs, Laila and Max, and Pebbles the cat.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Community Worship Center on Mission Road in Mount Vernon, near Princess Anne. Family and friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Ashley Maxwell is the officiating pastor, and the Rev. Lewis N. Watson will assist. Interment will be held in the church cemetery.

A ministry of comfort and dignity is being provided by the Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home of Salisbury.

Harold R. Greenhalgh Sr.

SALISBURY -- Harold R. Greenhalgh Sr., 79, of Salisbury died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Anna Evans Greenhalgh Smith.

Mr. Greenhalgh served 21 years in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Dresser Wayne. Memberships included Masonic Lodge 9 in Philadelphia, Lodge 201 in Delmar, Eastern Shore Scottish Rite Club, Eastern Shore Forest 53 of Tall Cedars, Evergreen Tall Cedars 49, a Shriner with Boumi Temple, Legion of Honor, Corinthian Royal Arch in Philadelphia, Delmar VFW and numerous other groups.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Miriam Greenhalgh; two sons, Harold R. Greenhalgh Jr. of Ocean City and Kenneth Greenhalgh and his wife, Alida, of Sharptown; four grandchildren, Alex, Charles, Jennifer and Brooks; a sister, Phyllis A. Sharpe of Henryville, Pa.; and he was loved by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Muscular Dystrophy, ALS Division, 615 S. Frederick Ave., Suite 308, Gaithersburg, Md. 20877.

Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home at 501 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury.

Paul Nathaniel Leager Jr.

SALISBURY -- Paul Nathaniel Leager Jr., 61, of Salisbury died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born in Dover, he was the son of Virginia Shahan Leager and the late Paul Nathaniel Leager Sr.

Mr. Leager, along with his wife and children, were poultry breeders for 24 years. He was a member of the Delmarva Poultry Industry and the Farmers Bureau. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Darlene Masten Leager; four children, Tina Bryant, Kimberly Scott and her husband, Patrick, Timothy Paul Leager and Michael Wade Leager and his girlfriend, Linda Wilson, all of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Jordian and Myranda Bryant; a brother, David Leager and his deceased wife, Joanne, of Clayton, Del.; two sisters, Dianne Mitchell and her husband, Sammy, of Smyrna, Del., and Shirley Ann Foskey of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Evan Nutter will officiate. Interment will follow in Shad Point Cemetery.
