DONALD R. WINTERS
Donald Roger Winters, 61, Oakland, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007.
Born Aug. 26, 1946, in Indiana, Pa., he was a son of the late Margaret Bucknall and Donald Russell Winters. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Bucknall.
He was a former resident of Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved to Garrett County in 1999.
He served in the U.S. Army from December 1964 to October 1977 as an image interpreter in military intelligence, and after an honorable discharge, spent another 3 years in the Army Reserves. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam: in 1965-66 with the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, and then with the 191st MI Detachment in 1967-68, receiving the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal. He was an instructor at the U.S. Army Intelligence School, Ft. Holabird, and also was stationed at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center, Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany. He earned a First Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Service as a senior image interpreter and achieved the rank of sergeant first class. After his military service, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service.
He is survived by his wife, Bonetta (Bonnie) Winters, Oakland; his son, Ian Winters, Berkeley, Calif.; two sisters, Kim Skelton, Deming, N.M., and Bonnie Ballard, Poultney, Vt.; and two brothers, Richard and Robert Bucknall, Winston-Salem, N.C.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Oakland, with the Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating.

JUNE E. GAUMER
June Etta Gaumer, 84, Salisbury, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Western Maryland Rehabilitation Center, Frostburg.
Born Jan. 30, 1923, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Lorena (Mort) Durst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Gaumer, on May 28, 1989; and six brothers, James, Morley, Jack, Daniel, William, and Charles Durst.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne Gaumer, Hagerstown, and Daniel Gaumer, Grantsville; one daughter, Brenda Otto, Salisbury; one sister, Mildred Yutzy, Taylor, Mich.; three granddaughters; two step-grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Salisbury, on Friday, Nov. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A service will be conducted on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. David E. Fetter officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in Salisbury Cemetery.

MICHAEL H. JAMES
Michael Howard James, 70, Cumberland, formerly of Silver Spring, and Arlington, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at his residence.
Born Jan. 2, 1938, in Denver, Colo., he was a son of the late Donnelly Trent James and Cleo (Simmons) James. He was also preceded in death by one son, Caleb Jackson Saulpaw Jr.
Mr. James was a member of the Episcopal Church in Arlington. He was a former salesman for Raleigh’s Men’s Clothing Store.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lorraine James; a twin brother, Frederick Lee James and wife Laureen, Arlington; one daughter-in-law, Clarice Weimer and husband Thomas; three grandchildren, Brian Grace and wife Lisa, Pamela Buckel and husband Randy, and Kelly Coutras and husband Matt; two great-grandchildren, Neil and Nicholas Buckel; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Gutierrez, York, Pa., and Louise Koppe and husband Doug, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and two nephews, Robert James and Frederick L. James Jr.
Friends were received at the Hafer Funeral Chapel of the Hills, LaVale, where a service was held on Saturday, Jan. 26, with Pastor Thomas Twigg officiating.
Interment followed in the Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church, Va.

MARY V. MURRAY
Mary Virginia Bolden Worgan Murray, 87, Seattle, Wash., died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at her home.
Born on Nov. 10, 1920, in Oakland, she was a daughter of the late Emory and Mary (May) Bolden. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Dr. David K. Worgan and Edward Duff Murray; and one daughter, Diane Worgan.
With "getting old is not for sissies" as a motto in her later life, Mary took on the challenges of cardiac bypass surgery and a stroke, and she remained independent and engaged in life.
She was given the nickname "Ginger" by her brother DeCorsey Bolden and sister Nancy Helbig, both of Oakland. The three of them have shared their joys and heartaches and have remained very close. They grew up in the Oakland funeral home owned by their parents.
At the University of Maryland she was chosen as a Preakness princess and earned a degree in home economics. She was an excellent cook and party planner. She also taught school in Gaithersburg and Friendsville, and worked as an administrative assistant in Baltimore during World War II.
Ginger married Dr. David K. Worgan from Luke in 1947. He was an Army doctor and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash., in 1949. They moved to Seattle after his military service ended, where they raised two children, Nancy and David.
She resided in Seattle for the last 53 years of her life but made many visits to Oakland. As the wife of a doctor, Ginger entertained extensively, served on medical and church auxiliaries, supported a pony league baseball team, and served on the board of a Seattle youth association.
After her divorce from Dr. Worgan in 1970, she married Edward Duff Murray of Seattle. They were married for 29 years until his death in 1999. She lived independently in her own home until her stroke in early November of 2007.
Ginger loved her children, grandchildren, sister and brothers, and their families. She supported them all with advice, kindness, humor, and generosity. She also enjoyed discussing politics, choosing investments, gardening and decorating her home, and voting. She was one of a kind.
In addition to her siblings, she is survived by her children, David Worgan and wife Lori Davis, and Nancy Preg and husband Ted; and her grandchildren, Sophia, Bolden, Madison, Jessica, and Tim.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Monday Jan. 28, with the Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson officiating.
Interment was held in the Oakland Cemetery.

JUDY L. ARTICE
Judy Lane Artice, 48, Accident, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 9, 1959, in Oakland, she was a daughter of Carrie (Fearer) Sines, Friendsville, and the late Charles Sines.
She was a presser for 24 years at the Fechheimer Shirt Factory.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Lonnie E. Artice; one son, Matthew Artice, Accident; two daughters, Vickie Deal, Friendsville, and Teresa Artice, Oakland; one brother, John Henry Sines, Friendsville; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, where a service was held Wednesday, Jan. 30, with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating.
Interment was held in St. John’s Cemetery.
CARL L. BITTINGER
Carl Leon Bittinger, 66, Oakland, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at his home.
Born on Feb. 13, 1941, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late William H. Bittinger and Virginia E. (Cosner) Bittinger. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Harold W. Bittinger.
He was a member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren and served as a trustee and deacon for several years. He worked at CMC Enterprise and Suburban Propane, and he cut timber for a living. He was also a member of the Mtn. Top Promenaders, and he was a part owner and operator of the family farm.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rozella (Liller) Bittinger; one daughter, Rebecca Lynn Roth and husband Jason, Oakland and one son, Vincent C. Bittinger and wife Michelle L. Callis, Port Charlotte, Fla.; one sister, Frances Hanlin, Oakland, and two grandchildren, Alicia C. and Courtney L. Roth. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland.
A service was held at the Fairview Church of the Brethren on Sunday, Jan. 27, with Rev. David Moon officiating.
Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery, Oakland.
ROBERT E. WATSON
Robert Earl Watson, 80, Swanton, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born June 10, 1927, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was a son of the late Lawrence and Ada (Meyers) Watson. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and David Watson; and one sister, Katherine Jane McIntyre.
Mr. Watson was an assistant manager for 33 years for the Flushing Shirt Factory, Grantsville, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Meadow Mtn. He was also a member of the Grantsville Post 214 American Legion for over 49 years and the Casselman Valley Sportsmen Club.
He is survived by his wife, Lois E. (Wiley) Watson; one daughter, Deborah Campbell and husband Jack, Grantsville; three grandchildren, Bobbie Campbell, Jackie Fratz, and Chad Campbell; and 10 great-grandchildren, Andrea Upole, Taylor Sebree, Colin Fratz, Skyler Fratz, Kirsten Campbell, Caleb Campbell, Levi Campbell, Joel Campbell, Spencer Morrow, and Tori Morrow.
Friends were received at Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted on Monday, Jan. 28, with the Rev. Randy Richardson officiating.
Interment was held in the Grantsville Cemetery, where military graveside rites were accorded by Grantsville Post 214 American Legion.

DONALD G. DUCKWORTH
Donald Guy Duckworth, 60, Petersburg, W.Va., formerly of Swanton, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at his residence.
Born May 4, 1947, in Swanton, he was the son of the late Guy Dale Duckworth and Vera Joy (Hamilton) Duckworth. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Harvey.
He was a retired coal miner, and was also a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in 1965. He was a member of Victory Post 155 American Legion, Westernport, where he shot pool on the legion team.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Catherine Duckworth; and one sister, Joyce Faye Everett, Oakland.
His body was cremated.
Friends were received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, where a memorial service was conducted in the chapel on Sunday, Jan. 27, with Rodney Tichinel officiating.
Inurnment was held in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
