Charles A. "Tony" Bruce
SALISBURY -- Charles A. "Tony" Bruce Jr., age 58, a prominent Somerset County attorney, passed away suddenly Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Salisbury on Oct. 5, 1947, he was the son of Charles A. Bruce Sr. and the late Irene Larmore Bruce of Princess Anne.
Tony grew up in Mount Vernon and was an active member of the Mount Vernon 4-H Club, serving as president twice, winning several public speaking contests and gaining recognition as a 4-H All-Star in 1965. He received a District Award from the Lions International for his "Peace Essay" as well as an award for public speaking. He graduated from Washington High School in 1965, attended University of Maryland College Park and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore in 1974. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. Tony was admitted to the bar in December 1974 and was also admitted to practice in Federal District Court. He began his law career in the Princess Anne office of Jones and Jones, practicing with Alexander "Sandy" Jones. After Sandy's retirement, Tony continued the law business, eventually changing the firm name to Tony Bruce, P.A. Assisting him throughout his career was his legal secretary, Janet Bedsworth.
Tony believed in public service and served on numerous committees throughout his life. Some of his civic activities included: The Somerset County Historical Society; McCready Memorial Hospital Board of Directors; Mercantile Peninsula Bank Board of Directors; MAC Inc. Board of Directors; Rural Development Center Advisory Committee; Agricultural Law Association; the Princess Anne Chamber of Commerce; the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore; the Somerset County Economic Development Council, where he had served as chairman for many years; and the Princess Anne Coffee Club. He was selected as Somerset County's representative in the Maryland You Are Beautiful volunteer recognition program in 1991.
Tony also served as the chairperson for the Somerset County Library Building Campaign in 1987-1988; treasurer for the Tangier Sound Music Festival from 1990-1997; the general chairman of the 1981 Delmarva Chicken Festival; and as a member of the original Somerset County Tourism Commission.
During his career he served many agencies as an attorney, including: Somerset County Public Schools; Soil Conservation District; City of Crisfield; Somerset County Liquor Board and Somerset County Board of Election Supervisors. He also served as the deputy state's attorney for Somerset County from 1978-1980. He was a current member of the Somerset County Bar Association; the Maryland State Bar Association; the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; the Somerset County Democratic Club and the Somerset County Public Schools Master Plan Steering Committee.
Tony served as a delegate in the Maryland House of Delegates, completing the term of the Honorable Daniel Long. He was currently running for the delegate seat in District 38A.
He was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church in Princess Anne. He was a past chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and was a member of the Sharing and Caring Committee. Tony was a certified lay speaker, brought the morning message and assisted with Sunday services on numerous occasions.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents, Will and Lillian Larmore and Marshall and Marie Bruce. In addition to his father, he is survived by two aunts, Carole Beauchamp of Newark, Del., and Jean Mancuso of Berlin, N.Y., as well as several cousins, including a special cousin, Leslie Coven of Long Island, N.Y.
A service remembering Tony's life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Antioch United Methodist Church in Princess Anne, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Officiating will be the Revs. Richard Walton and Olivia Costango. Interment will be in Beechwood cemetery in Princess Anne.

Lillian Ann Bachtler
SALISBURY -- Lillian Ann "Dede" Bachtler, 81, of Salisbury died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in the gentle care of Coastal Hospice at the Lake.
A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, Dede was a versatile and accomplished award-winning artist and a member of the Art Institute and Gallery and the "Attic Artists."
She is survived by her husband, Joe Bachtler of Salisbury; a brother, Mack Emmert of Wilmington; a daughter, Robin Bachtler Cushman and her husband, John Hazen, of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Shawn Bachtler of Seattle; a granddaughter, Sage Cushman of Portland, Ore.; two grandsons, Brandon and Austin Bowden of Salisbury; and a large and loving related and adoptive family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Jodee Lee Bowden.
She served Easter Seals of Delaware and Maryland's Eastern Shore for many years as coordinator of the Wicomico Stroke Club and was the 2003 recipient of Easter Seals' highest award for her "dedication and commitment to people with disabilities." Dede was the tireless crew chief and senior cheerleader of the Bachtler family SCCA Formula Vee racing team for more than 30 years. She was a longtime active and contributing member of Grace United Methodist Church, where her art work graced many publications. A woman with an enormous capacity to love, people everywhere were drawn to her and loved her in return. She had a love of fun and laughter and a vivid, often bawdy, sense of humor. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Salisbury.

Charles M. Nicholson Jr.
LAUREL -- Charles M. Nicholson Jr., 82, of Laurel died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Green Valley Terrace in Millsboro.
He was born in Laurel to the late Charles M. Nicholson Sr. and Mary Nicholson.
He worked many years as a route driver for Nanticoke Cleaners in Seaford. He was an active state police volunteer and a musician, enjoying the saxophone and trumpet. He was a member of the Messiah Vineyard Church in Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Ann Nicholson of Laurel; and his cousins, Pat Alexander of Pennsylvania and Wilson Horseman of Delaware. He is also survived by his close friends, Paul and Barbara Wootten, Paula Whaley and Leslie Wootten, all of Laurel; and his pride and joy, his cat, Buttercup.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home at 700 West St. in Laurel, where friends may call one hour prior. Friends may also call Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Laurel Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Carl Vincent will officiate.
Norman Bayard Giles
SALISBURY -- Norman Bayard Giles, 64, of Salisbury passed on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.
He was the son of the late Marie Giles and Gardner McBride.
Norman graduated from William C. Jason High School of Georgetown. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge in 1967. He had two years of college in Boston.
He was employed by Campbell Soup Co. as an inspector and at Delmarva Power and Light for 23 years before his retirement. Norman was a member of American Legion Post 145. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior Oct. 1, 2006.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 38 years, Vera Giles; four sisters-in-law, Ernestine Byrd and Verna Matthews of Salisbury, Phyllis Wright of Allen and Vivian Jackson of Baltimore; one brother-in-law, Calvin Byrd of Salisbury; and a special aunt, Doris Bailey of Laurel.
A viewing will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home on West Road, where a homegoing service will be held Monday at 11 a.m., with viewing one hour prior. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.
Cornelia P. Davis
PARSONSBURG -- Cornelia P. "Connie" Davis, 67, of Parsonsburg died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at her home.
Born in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late George and Margaret Felzanas Pappas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Davis, in 2006.
Mrs. Davis was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City and was a bus driver for Wicomico County for 40 years.
She is survived by her son, Alex Davis, and his wife, Jennifer, of Salisbury; three brothers, John, Alex, and Tony Pappas; two sisters, Dolores Weeks and Nikki McBride; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury. Father Vasilio will officiate. Interment will follow in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Leroy Alfonso Johnson
CRISFIELD -- Leroy Alfonso Johnson, also known as "Man-Man, " died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006.
He was born in Crisfield to Beverly Johnson and Jimmy Alexander.
He attended Crisfield High School and was in the 10th grade. He was an honor roll student with a 3.0 average. He loved playing basketball, tutoring at the community center and making people smile. He attended Building the Virteus Temple in Elkton, Md., Pastor Marci Bryant. He also attended many churches with his basketball team. His first and only job was Studio Look Out, which he enjoyed.
Leroy leaves to mourn his mother, Beverly Johnson; his father, Jimmy Alexander; a sister, Garlynn Johnson; three brothers, Jimmy Alexander, Jamar Alexander and Calieb Alexander; his maternal grandparents, Consola Johnson and Leroy Johnson; his paternal grandparents, Thelma Alexander and the late Joseph Alexander; his maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Henderson; his paternal great-grandparent, the late Helen Cottman; three aunts, Sherry Johnson, Laronda Johnson and Minnie Alexander; four uncles, Joe Alexander, Leroy Cottman, James Cottman and Cedric Ward; two very special friends, Marcia Jones and Uncle Chip; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Sherry Lynn Swanson Flatley
SALISBURY -- Sherry Lynn Swanson Flatley, 51, recently of Salisbury, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore.
Born in Richmond, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Swanson and Joyce Swanson Greer.
Sherry graduated with honors from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a degree in agricultural economics.
She was full of life and happiness. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved her three boys and her grandchildren. Throughout her life she was involved in the activities of her children.
Sherry had a wonderful sense of humor; she was tremendously generous to everyone, and loved to read and entertain friends.
She is survived by her husband, John P. Flatley of Girdletree; three sons, Jacob Flatley and his wife, Amy, of Pocomoke City, and Joshua Flatley and Jonathan Flatley, both of Girdletree; a sister, Terry Bandy and her companion, Milton Proffitt, of Laneview, Va.; three brothers, Buddy Wright and his wife, Linda, of Mechanicsville, Va., Samuel Swanson Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Columbia, S.C., and James Swanson and his wife, Sherry, of Sandston, Va.; three grandchildren, Samantha, Jeremy and Landon Flatley; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Howard Travers will officiate.

Mary L. Hastings
OCEAN CITY -- Mary L. Hastings, 81, died at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006.
Born in Greenbackville, she was the daughter of the late Jordan Simpson and Dolcie Gill Simpson and the wife of the late Charles "Chubby" Hastings.
Mary was a member and past president of the American Legion Post 166 Ladies Auxiliary, an avid bingo player, and had retired from restaurant and catering services.
Mary is survived by three sons, Jack Hastings and his wife, Jane, of Pittsville, Mike Hastings and his wife, Sharen, of Ocean City and Ralph Hastings and his wife, Penny, of Ocean City; three brothers, Jerry Simpson and his wife, Mary Ann, Mack Simpson and his wife, Betty, and Albert Simpson and his wife, Raye; two grandchildren, Stephanie Hastings Valdivia and her husband, Jeff, of Pittsville and Richard Hastings of Ocean City; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin, where friends may call from noon until service time. The Rev. David Dingwall will officiate. Interment will be private.

Wilsie D. Parker
LEESBURG, Fla. -- Wilsie D. Parker, 85, of Leesburg, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Hospice of Lake and Sumter in Tavares, Fla.
She was born in and lived in Salisbury for 75 years and had lived in Leesburg for the past nine years.
She was a bookkeeper for a wholesale grocery.
She was a member of Christ Methodist Church in Salisbury.
She is survived by a daughter, Priscilla Burdick, and her husband, Dick, of Leesburg; three grandchildren, Andrew, Benjamin and Carrie Burdick; and a sister, Gladys Snyder of Delmar.
