Brenda C. “Bonnie” Bradford
BERLIN - Brenda C. “Boonie” Bradford, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Ironshire near Berlin, she was the daughter of Elijah Bradford, Sr. and Rubie Butler Bradford. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Viola Lewis, Cecil Bunting, Charlotte Hallsman, Thelma Phillips, Margaret Magee, Jason Bradford, Elijah Bradford, Jr., Robert Bradford, and a nephew, Robert W. Phillips, Jr. She is survived by her sister-in-law and best friend Myrtle Bradford Burbage of Berlin and nieces and nephews, Margaret Bradford, Mary Adeline Bradford, Susan Caldwell and Lloyd Lewis of Ocean City, Connie Dukes, Frances Maletti and James Phillips of Berlin and Joyce Higgins and Ellen Sirman of Seaford, Del.
She retired from the Berlin Post Office where she worked as a rural carrier for many years. Her most important avocation was that of a family caregiver. For many years she provided loving care to her elderly father and mother and she also cared for her sister Cecil when she became ill. Her life was devoted to her family and although she had no children, she played a major role in the rearing of her 10 nieces and nephews and their children. She became the family matriarch and mentor. She had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed regaling others with her witticisms. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin, member of their Altar Guilde and the Women’s Junior Guilde. She had once sold tickets at the Old Globe Theater in Berlin.

James J. Mandas
OCEAN CITY - James John Mandas, 69, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa.
Born in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late John and Andromachi Mandas. He is survived by his wife Anita Louise Del Corro and two step-sons Scott and his wife Victoria and Andrew Lee; four grandchildren; one brother, Dr. George Mandas and his wife Lucretia; and a nephew, John.
Mr. Mandas received his Bachelors degree from the University of Delaware and his masters and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania in engineering. He taught Engineering at Drexel University and later worked and retired from Lockheed-Martin where he specialized in radar defense systems for the United States Navy. He was a member of the Ocean City Senior Bowling League and the AARP of Ocean City.

John Brendan McEntegart
OCEAN PINES – John Brendan McEntegart died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital.
He was born in County Louth, Ireland and is the son of the late Jack and Mary (Lynch) McEntegart.
John attended Christian Brothers Schools in Ireland and graduated from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. with a Masters in Business Administration. He was employed as Chief Financial Officer of Audio Dynamics (BSR of England) and later Director of Finance for Queens Surface Corp. in Queens, N.Y.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the Delmarva Irish American Club.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Marie (McDonald); a son Sean and partner Dusty Fohs of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Tricia and husband Peter Kiely of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Patrick and Brigid Kiely; and sisters Monica, Nancy, Kathleen and Patricia. He is also survived by in-laws John and Nancy Doris and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke, St. Andrew, and St. John Neumann Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 3400 Ocean City, Md. 21843.

Patricia Cropper Wilde
BERLIN – Patricia “Pat” Cropper Wilde, 71 died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Reese Farrell Cropper, Sr. and Virginia Esham Cropper. She is survived by two sons, Hugh F. Wilde, Jr. and his wife Toni Boggs Wilde of Bishopville and Jonathan Ross Wilde and his wife Cindi Kirby Wilde of Ocean City; four grandchildren, Ryan Frederick Wilde, Jonathan Thomas Wilde, Zachary Frederick Wilde and Joshua Patrick Wilde; a brother Reese F. Cropper, Jr. of Ocean City; two sisters, Ellen Cropper of St. Michaels and Joan Cropper Vetare of Berlin; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Wilde was a devoted mother, grandmother and homemaker who was always attentive to her family’s needs. She enjoyed entertaining at home and dancing at Dunes Club functions. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Michael Moyer will officiate. Entombment will be private at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery.

Madalena D’Orazio
OCEAN CITY – Madalena D’Orazio, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital.
She was born in Rome, Italy, a daughter of the late Domenico and Angela Proietti. She is survived by her husband, Arduino D. D’Orazio and a grandson Paul Javornik of Plano, Texas. Her daughter, Phyllis D’Orazio Javornik died in 1996. Mrs. D’Orazio’s siblings are Maria D. Battista of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Elio Proietti and Anna Vecchio, both of Rome.
The couple moved here from Washington, D.C. in 1992. Her memberships included St. Luke’s Church, Ocean City Senior Center and the Sister City Program at City Hall.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held.
Robert Edwin David
BERLIN – Robert Edwin David, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Alexander Patrick David and Clara Young David. He is survived by his wife of 17 years Helen Stephani David; three daughters, Bonnie Nolan and her husband Michael of West Grove, Pa., Patricia Grattini of Marlton, N.J. and Sandra Lee Joyce of Longhorne, Pa.; and a stepson, Ryan Putney of Chester Heights, Pa. There are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He graduated in 1940 from Marple-Newtown High School. He served three years in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a medical photographer for the Veteran’s Administration Medical Service for 34 years serving at VA hospitals in New Orleans, Ft. Howard, Md. and Philadelphia.

Vincent Theodore Sweigert
OCEAN PINES – Vincent Theodore Sweigert, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter and Blanche Sweigert. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Gray Sweigert; three daughters, Anne Zaffino and her husband Sam of Salisbury, N.C., Susan Lochridge and her husband Ken of Greenville, S.C. and Nancy Thomas and her husband Harry of Warminister, Pa.; two sons, William Sweigert and his companion Deborah of Bishopville, Jim Sweigert and his wife Marie of Marino Valley, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Sweigert had attended Mont Alto Forestry School and Penn State. He had been a park superintendent at several parks including Tionesta Dam Park in Tionesta, Pa. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Ocean Pines.

Bonnie P. Pfaff
OCEAN PINES – Bonnie P. Pfaff, 78, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005 at Atlantic General Hospital.
Her survivors include her husband, Michael F.Pfaff; a son Frank M. Pfaff and Judith Palladino of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Michael, Jason, David-Stephen, and Bonnie; two great-grandchildren with another on the way; and a sister, Ruth Godwin of Baltimore.
She was active in sports and was a needlepoint artist. She moved here 18 years ago from the Richmond area. Upon her retirement as an Administrative Director at the U.S. Geological Survey, she was given the following accolade, “I can’t say enough about the dedication you brought to your job. The quantity and quality of your work has always been outstanding, and you always gave what it took to get the job done...Bonnie, you have a number of excellent work traits, but over and above all of those, I have always felt that you have one of even higher importance. That is, I think you are a real lady. The precise definition of a ‘real lady’ is sometimes a little vague, but make no mistake, it includes someone who is very special and is in a class by herself,” said District Chief Herb Freiberger.
Her philosophy of life can best be summed up by the following: The true force of the highest power we call God; Expresses itself in life as Love. Not just a thought or feeling, but Action. And since God is Love and Love is Action; then God is surely Love’s Action.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Church. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
Frances Scarborough Sturgis
SNOW HILL – Frances Scarborough Sturgis died on Jan. 31, 2005 in Snow Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she has been a patient for a month.
Sturgis had been in declining health for a year at her home. Born on April 19, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Franklin Bishop and Emily McGowan Scarborough of Girdletree. Educated in the public schools of Worcester County and at Blackstone College in Virginia, she married
James T. Sturgis in 1941. For many years, she was an active partner in the fertilizer/agricultural chemical firm founded by her husband. The company was sold in 1977, and Mr. Sturgis, a civic leader and long-time Snow Hill mayor, died in 1978.
Mrs. Sturgis was active in a variety of community organizations including charter memberships in the Worcester County Historical Society, the Worcester County Garden Club, Snow Hill Soroptimist Club, Snow Hill Chapter of the Junior Board. The Historical Society was organized at a luncheon in her home in July 1959. In 1960, she worked with the Snow Hill City Council to acquire the Julia Purnell Museum and organized the first collections in the present facility. For many years she was a volunteer tour guide. Mrs. Sturgis played a major role in founding the former Nassawango Country Club, and until her health declined was an active supporter of club activities and an avid golfer. For over 30 years, Mrs. Sturgis led efforts to decorate the downtown area for Christmas and provided landscaping for the summer months. In recognition of her contributions, the Worcester County Garden Club dedicated the Welcoming Garden on Green Street in her honor in 2002.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs.Sturgis was preceded in death by two sisters Emily S. Hudson and Ann S. Gordy. She is survived by a daughter, Ann S. Coates and her husband Randall Coates of Snow Hill; a son, Dr. J. Thomas Sturgis of Dover, Del.; and a grandson, Bryan Austin Coates, a student at Dickinson College.
A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. in Bates Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Coates residence, 103 N. Church Street. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
