Robert R. Fenton
BERLIN – Robert R. Fenton, 84, of Squirrel Hill (Pittsburgh) Pa. and Ocean City, passed peacefully at home on Aug. 20, 2005.
Devoted and loving husband of the late Dorothy C. (DeVincent) Fenton; cherished father of Autumn L. Fenton and her husband Scott Stark; and brother of Martha Fenton Golab and the late Charles Fenton. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
Fenton was an avid outdoorsman, accomplished trap shooter and loved ballroom dancing. Mr. Fenton and his family owned Eagle’s Nest Campground and Trailer Park in Ocean City from 1976 until its sale in January 2005 for health reasons.
A funeral mass was held.
James M. Purnell Sr.
BERLIN – A funeral service was held for James M. Purnell Sr., 83, of Berlin last Saturday at New Bethel United Methodist Church in Berlin. He passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
His parents were the late Riley and Etta Bowen Purnell. His wife, Charlotte E. Purnell, preceded him in death on March 24, 1993. A son, William Purnell Sr., preceded him in death on June 26, 1993.
He is survived by a daughter, Regina Purnell-Goss (Kenneth) of Lake Worth, Fla., and two sons, James R. Purnell Jr. (Naomi) and Conwell Purnell (Danette), all of Berlin. He also leaves to mourn two brothers, Isiah Robbins (Elise) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and John Robbins of Dover. Mourning his death are 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury.
Gladys Morris
BERLIN – Gladys Morris, 82, of Berlin, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005 at her daughter’s home in Siler City, N.C.
She was born Aug. 12, 1923 in Cartmel, England. During WWII, she met her late husband, Charles Morris, married
and came to the United States in 1945.
She is survived by four children, Dave Morris of Riva, Md., Mike Morris of Owings, Md., Chuck Morris of Riverdale, Md., and Kathy Bruegging of Siler City, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, P.A., 8125 Southern Maryland Blvd., Owings, Md. on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 2 p.m. until time of memorial services at 3 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Care Hospice, 1414 E. 11th St., Siler City, N.C. 27344.

John Joseph Payne
BERLIN – John Joseph Payne, 79, died at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005.
Born in Berlin, he was the son of the late Nathaniel Payne and Mary E. Kierchner Payne.
Payne was a carpenter by trade, World War II Army veteran and was a gardening, fishing and boating enthusiast. Survivors include his daughter, Rosemary Bartz, and her husband James of Berlin, and his grandchildren, Sandra Jones of Perry Hall, Md. and James Christopher Bartz of Forest Hall, Md. Services were held.
Shane Randall Truitt
WHALEYVILLE – Shane Randall Truitt, 25, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005.
Born in Salisbury, he was the son of Randy Truitt and his wife Dawn and Billie J. Tragle and her husband Jim. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Norwood Truitt, Frances Tragle and Peggy and Buddy Campbell; a brother, Zachary Truitt; a sister, Shara Taylor; his beloved pitbull “Barry”; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Focus Adolescent Services, 1113 Woodland Rd., Salisbury, Md. 21801.

Oliver Leroy Davenport
OCEAN PINES – Oliver ‘Roy” Leroy Davenport, 81, died Thursday, Oct.27, 2005.
Born in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Howard T. Davenport and Virginia Walker Davenport. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia and daughter Patricia. He is survived by two sons, Jerry and his wife Lorraine of Delmar and Lee of Columbia; three grandchildren, Shannon Hawks, Eric and John Davenport; and numerous cousins.
He was a member of Ocean City Baptist Church and Past Master of the Evergreen Lodge #153. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
A memorial service was held. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ocean City Christian School Vision Fund, 12637B Ocean Gateway, Ocean City, Md. 21842.
Florence Madeline Foxwell
SALISBURY – Florence Madeline Foxwell, 101, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005 at the John B. Parsons Home in Salisbury.
Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Alison A. Richardson and Katherine Tierney Richardson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Reese Foxwell, in 1977.
Services were held. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Barbara A. Smith
OCEAN CITY – Barbara A. Smith, 66, formerly of Washington, D.C. died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005 at her home.
Born in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Richard P. and Martha Stark Bode. She is survived by her husband Frank M. Smith of Ocean City; two sons, Gary P. Oden of Crownsville, Md. and Andrew T. Oden of Front Royal, Va.; a daughter, Paula A. Rose of Beltsville, Md.; and stepchildren, Frank M. Smith, Jr. of Ocean Pines, Beverly Patterson of Bowie, Md., Robin McCord of Washington Boro, Pa.
She was the loving grandmother of Taylor Rose, Kyleigh Rose, Rachel Oden, Thomas Oden, David Crissman, Jr., Phillip McCord, Erin Patterson and Eric Patterson. She was preceded in death by a stepson, David R. Smith.
She had been a sales clerk at Sears for many years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Ocean City, Md. and was an avid RVer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 100th St., Ocean City, Md. Father Edward Fahey will officiate.

Dr. Barbara Hulfish
OCEAN CITY – Dr. Barbara Hulfish died on Oct. 31, 2005 in Baltimore.
Born in Alexandria, Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Andrew Hulfish and Betty Mae Pollard.
Hulfish was a graduate of American University and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. For many years, she was on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she held joint appointments in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry. Her passion was teaching and she enjoyed the opportunity to teach a generation of medical school students and residents. She served as a consultant at Harbor Hospital, Union Memorial and Keswick. She also conducted neurology clinics in Wicomico, Dorchester, Kent and Washington counties. After her retirement from University of Maryland, she maintained a neurology practice in Berlin for several years. Until her death, she remained active in the Maryland State Medical Society serving on several committees. She was also a member of the Academy of Neurology.
Hulfish also enjoyed music and was a former member of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and was a current member of the choir at Govans Presbyterian Church. For many years, she was a volunteer at WBJC radio station where she shared her extensive knowledge of classical music. She was a member of St. Paul’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Ocean City where she served as a lay reader, choir member and on the Vestry.
In addition to her parents, Hulfish was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas A. Hulfish. She is survived by a niece, Sherry Browne, and her nephew, Thomas Hulfish and several great nieces and nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her God-daughter, Mary Adeline Bradford.
Graveside services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin today at 1 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Govans Presbyterian Church, 5826 York Rd., Baltimore, Md.
Donations can be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Paul’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1207, Ocean City, Md. 21843.
