Mykala Naje' Johnson
BERLIN – Mykala Naje' Johnson, 5 months old, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of William Lee Johnson Jr. of Milton and Michelle M. Bishop of Berlin.
In addition to her parents, she will be remembered by maternal grandparents, Otis W. Bishop of Berlin and Deborah L. Brown and her husband, James, also of Berlin; paternal grandparents, William L. Johnson Sr. of Milford and Teresia H. Johnson and her fiancé, Elton G. Burton, of Milton; two godparents, Arnetta Simpson of Baltimore and Andre Butler of Seaford; maternal great-grandmother, Francine Mumford of Berlin; paternal great-grandparents, George and Frances Phillips of Georgetown; and several godbrothers, godsisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Thursday at St. James Holiness Church on Dighton Avenue in Snow Hill. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home in Salisbury.
Sandra "Sandy" Lee Lyter
BERLIN – Sandra "Sandy" Lee Lyter, age 55, of Stockton, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Charles Herald and Frances Hall Herald.
Lyter had worked as a grant administrator for Worcester County, she was a member of Girdletree United Methodist Church, Snow Hill American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, Snow Hill Order of Eastern Star and a volunteer with Diakonia.
She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Michael Lyter. She was preceded in death by her son Tighe Michael Lyter.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Girdletree United Methodist Church at 1 pm (casual attire is requested). Bennett Bozman
BERLIN – Bennett Bozman, age 69 of Berlin, died on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
He was born on May 8, 1936 in Norfolk, Va. to S. Russell Bozman and Sarah Bennett Bozman.
Bozman was a Democrat, District 38B, Worcester County and eastern Wicomico County; a member of the House of Delegates since 1991, was Deputy Majority Whip from 1995 to present; member, Ways and Means Committee, 1995 to present; Chairman, Sub-Committee on Education, Ways and Means; Joint Committee on Federal Relations, 1995 to present; Constitutional and Administrative Law Committee, 1991-1992; Economic Matters Committee, 1992-93; Commerce and Government Matters Committee, 1994.
Bozman was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Washington High School, Princess Anne; University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, B.S., 1961, served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1961 to 1969. He was a Pharmacist, a member of the Democratic State Central Committee, Worcester County 1974-78, member, Worcester County board of County Commissioners, 1978-90 and president 1987-88, president, Maryland Association of Counties, 1990, member, Maryland Tourism Development Board, 1994 to present, member Atlantic General Hospital Foundation Board, Salisbury Elks Club, Ocean City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ocean City Marlin Club, Ducks Unlimited. Former member Berlin Lions Club, Berlin-Ocean City Jaycees, Berlin Chamber of Commerce, Life Member University of Maryland Alumni Association. Recipient of Bowl of Hygeia for State of Maryland, a national pharmacy award, 1989. Retired member, Berlin Fire Company for 35 years.
He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betty Ann" S. Bozman; father of Sondra B. Daisey and her husband, Michael J. Daisey, and Katherine B. Engle and her husband, Matthew A. Engle; grandfather of Caroline, Sarah and Grace Engle; and cousin of David Shirk of Norfolk, Va. and Linda Wood of Atlanta, Ga. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Bozman.

Susanne Claire Lavanceau Peery
BERLIN – Susanne Claire Lavanceau Peery of Columbia died of cancer April 23 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson after a heroic 14-month battle she fought without once complaining or feeling sorry for herself during her uphill battle that she fought until the very end. She was 45 and touched so many lives with her quiet smile.
Born Oct. 13, 1960, in Washington, D.C., she was a hair stylist with the Hair Cuttery.
Her family said that her 8-year-old son, Ryan, was the “light of her life”.
In addition to her son, she is survived by her husband Steve Peery of Columbia; her father Andre’ Lavanceau and her stepmother Patricia Ilczuk-Lavanceau of Ocean City; her mother and stepfather Margaret “Kitty” and Michael Phillips of Columbia; her sister and bother-in-law Colette Lavanceau Pountnay and Thomas Pountnay of Laurel, Md.; and her brother, Andre D. Lavanceau of Roxanna, Del.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Robert and Francis O’Shea and Daniel and Jeanne Lavanceau.
Funeral services were held in Columbia. Henry “Buddy” Hanna
BERLIN – Henry “Buddy” Hanna, business owner and community leader from 1945 until retiring in 1995, died peacefully at his home in Pompano Beach, Fla., on Thursday, June 8, 2006, with his wife, Jackie, at his side.
He was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Salisbury to the late Henry H Hanna and Virginia Lee Perdue Hanna. He was the grandson of the late Dean W. Perdue and Nannie Toadvine Perdue of Salisbury, and the late Edwin Fulton Hanna Sr. and Varina Herbert Hanna of Ellicott City.
He served in the Army in Europe during World War II. Upon returning home to Salisbury, he started a long career as an entrepreneur and community leader. He started an insurance agency that grew into what is now the Hanna Kremer & Tilghman Insurance Company in Salisbury. He later started Hanna Real Estate and began work as a developer. He planned and developed many new home communities and built the first condominiums in the Salisbury area in 1972. The real estate company evolved into Ahtes Hanna & Mclaughlin Realtors and was purchased by Long and Foster Real Estate in 1991.
He and his good friend, Milford Twilley, started the Wicomico Building Supply Business and later built the US Post Office buildings in Ocean City, Fruitland, and Delaware. In the 1960’s, after the local bus service was abandoned by the government as a financial failure, he and partners, Charles O. Hughes and Gwynne Church took up the challenge. They ran regular bus service from Salisbury to Delmar, Crisfield and Ocean City. In the late 60’s, he owned the Virginia Lee and Nancy Clair apartment buildings at 10th Street and the Boardwalk, and he built and operated the Surfside 8 Motel in Ocean City. In 1978, he started a new career in Ocean City with the purchase of the Marina Deck Restaurant in partnership with his son Frank.
His real pleasure was serving his community and helping others. He joined the Salisbury Jaycees in 1946, which marked the beginning of his involvement in many local professional organ including the VFW and Elks Club. In 1948 he was elected to the Salisbury City Council at the age of 27, and in 1950 began serving the first of three terms in the Maryland House of Delegates.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jacqueline Vigor Hanna of Pompano Beach, Fla. and two step-daughters, Tracey Vigor Aljabaari of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Sallie Vigor Gordy of Ocean City. He also leaves his former wife, Mable Brown Hanna and their children, Henry H Hanna III and his wife Dara of Salisbury, Virginia Lee Brassel and her husband Jon of Annapolis, Frank B Hanna Sr. and his wife Nancy of Salisbury, and Nancy Clair Godwin and her husband Jim of Spruce Pine, N.C. In addition, he leaves 10 grandchildren, Claire Aljabaari, Jemma Vigor, Harry Gordy, Will Brassel, Ryan Brassel, Frank Hanna Jr. and his wife Kate, Wes Hanna, Leigh Hanna, Hank Godwin and Katie Godwin. His only great-grandchild, Cole Edward Hanna, is six months old. He is also survived by a nephew, James A Grady and his wife Suzie of Timonium, Md. And finally, he leaves his care giver, Claudia Eaton, who lovingly cared for him for three years, since his move to Florida.

A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Friday, June 30, 2006, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury. Friends may visit the family starting at 11 a.m. in the St Peter’s Parish House. A celebration will follow at Brew River Restaurant around 1 pm.
Joseph G. Camiel
OCEAN PINES – Joseph G. Camiel, 77, died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at home.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Nagurna Camiel. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Camiel of Ocean Pines; a son, Michael J. Camiel of Lutherville, Md.; two daughters, Patricia C. Conley and Cathleen A. Camiel of Philadelphia; and a brother, Edwin J. Camiel of Philadelphia. There are seven grandchildren, Karen Conley Whitacre, Robert Conley Jr., Brendan, Caitlin, Adam, Jacob and Sarah Camiel; one great grandson, William R. Whitacre; and a godson, Stephen Lesczynski and his wife LInda of Severna Park.
Camiel was a veteran of the United States Army and had been an auditor for the state of Pennsylvania. He also was a partner in the Camiel Beverage Co. in Philadelphia. He was a member of St. John Nuemann Catholic Church, Ocean Pines and a member of the Worcester County Democratic Club, the Polish American Club of Delmarva and the Irish American Club.

Frank Joseph Campbell
OCEAN PINES – Frank Joseph Campbell Jr., 79, died at AGH in Berlin on Saturday, June 10.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Frank J. Campbell Sr. and Helen Hughes Campbell.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marie; two sons, Frank J. Campbell III of Waldorf, Md., and John Campbell and his wife, Twila, of Waldorf; two daughters, Helen Garvey and her husband, Mark, of Waldorf and Kathleen Reese and her husband, Bill, of Green Bank, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Ian F. Campbell and Kaitlin Garvey.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shelby Campbell.
Campbell was with the U.S. government in telecommunications in the Department of Health and Human Services. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a Fourth Degree Past Grand Knight.
Friends may call Friday from 5-7 p.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Ocean Pines and Saturday at 11 a.m., one hour prior to the Mass of Christian burial.

Flora Helen Purdy
BERLIN – Flora Helen Purdy, 79, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006.
Born in Pa., she was the daughter of the late Lee and Leila Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester M. Purdy.
She is survived by her son, David and his companion Jessica Durosky of Annapolis; her daughter, Susan Billet and her husband George of Ocean City; two brothers, William Wright and his wife Ruth of Illinois., Edward Wright and his wife Dorothy of Pa.; a sister, Mary Miller of Millersville; a grandson, Matthew Purdy; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Sunday 3 p.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home where family will receive friends one hour prior. Rev. George Godfrey will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Berlin.

Mary L. Hastings
OCEAN CITY – Mary L. Hastings, 81, died at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006.
Born in Greenbackville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jordan Simpson and Dolcie Gill Simpson and the wife of the late Charles “Chubby” Hastings. She is survived by three sons, Jack Hastings and his wife Jane of Pittsville, Mike Hastings and his wife Sharen of Ocean City and Ralph Hastings and his wife Penny of Ocean City; three brothers, Jerry Simpson and his wife Mary Ann, Mack Simpson and his wife Betty and Albert Simpson and his wife Raye; two grandchildren, Stephanie Hastings Valdivia and her husband Jeff of Pittsville and Richard Hastings of Ocean City; and several nieces and nephews.
Hastings was a member and past president of American Legion Post #166 Ladies Auxiliary, an avid bingo player and retired from restaurant and catering services.
