Austin L. Huffer
JEFFERSON, Md. - Austin Luther Huffer, 79, of 6426 Broad Run Road, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at his home.
Born April 19, 1921, in Broad Run on his family's farm, he was the son of the late Charles Mathias and Daisy Delauder Huffer.
In his early years, he was employed with Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown, and then with Potomac Edison Co., Frederick, Md., from 1946 to 1983.
He was an Army infantry veteran during World War II and served with Patton's army, landing in Cherbourg, France, and proceeding to Germany. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
He was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown, where he served as elder and deacon and he sang in the choir and with the cantata for many years. He also served as treasurer of the Andrew and Philip Brotherhood of the Sunday School Class.
He was a member of Middletown Volunteer Fire Company, charter member of Valley Memorial Post 9 Amvets, Middletown, Md., was a member and past president of Burkittsville Ruritan Club, where he had perfect attendance for 43 years. He was also a member of the Forerunner Club with Potomac Edison and the Quarter Century Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marguerite A. Demory Huffer; a daughter, Kathy L. Lewis of Myersville, Md.; a son, Ronald E. Huffer of Jefferson; a brother, Carroll D. Huffer of Jefferson; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Huffer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ. The Rev. George H. Klinefelter will officiate. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Middletown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ. Friends may call today from noon to 5 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Woodrow W. Spessert
CLARKSBURG, Md. - Woodrow Wilson "Bill" Spessert, 86, of Slidell Road, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, while a patient at Longview Nursing Home, Manchester, Md. He had Parkinson's disease.
Born Aug. 2, 1913, on White Ridge, near St. George, W.Va., he was the son of the late George William and Ethel Grace White Spessert.
His wife, Ruth Doraline Kisner Spessert, died Jan. 30, 1999. They were married
on June 13, 1937.
He attended the one-room school on Stemple Ridge.
In his early life he was a farmer and woodsman. He was employed as a teamster of a horse-drawn hayride wagon at Smokey Glen Farm, near Germantown, Md.; worked at Rockville Crushed Stone, Inc., for several years and owned a garage in Aurora, W.Va., in the late 1950s.
He was a member of Germantown Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Windon of Frederick, Md., and Carol Snyder of Hanover, Pa.; a son, Larry Spessert of Frederick; a sister, Isabel Simmons of Porterwood, W.Va.; a brother, George W. Spessert Jr. of White Ridge, St. George; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Angelica Ruth Loughry, Laura Melvina Stiles, Margaret Pearl Stemple, Laila Marie Miller, and Ethel Grace Murray; and a brother, Cloyd Milton Spessert, who died April 17, 2000.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Limestone United Methodist Church, St. George. The Rev. Robert M. Leard officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Irvin S. Carbaugh
Irvin Scott Carbaugh, 87, of 1333 Cedarwood Drive, Hagerstown, and formerly of Kemps Mill, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1912, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late Frank Edgar and Clara Viola Beckley Carbaugh.
He was employed with Hagerstown Gas Co. and later retired from Columbia Gas Co. after 41 years of service.
He was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member and past president of Friendship Men's Class and sang in the Men's Chorus.
He was a member of the Quarter Century Club of Columbia Gas.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred V. Everly Carbaugh; three daughters, Ecile B. Shaw of Hagerstown, Roxanna K. Coe of Gapland, Md., and Deborah S. Holtzman of Smithsburg; a son, I. Blaine Carbaugh of Hagerstown; four sisters, Edith Weaver of Williamsport, Margaret Izer of State Line, Pa., Helen Reedy of Hagerstown, and Frances Shuman of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Frank Carbaugh of Hagerstown, 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Newkirk, and three brothers, Walter Carbaugh, David Carbaugh and Ralph Carbaugh.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 W. Church St., Hagerstown. The Revs. Robert S. Barton and Susan Hallegher will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, and 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

Sue E. Edwards
MAUGANSVILLE - Sue Ellen Edwards, 52, of Weaver Avenue, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 25, 1948, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late James J. and Emily M. Powell Carpenter.
She was a member of Upton Full Gospel Church in Greencastle, Pa.
She is survived by one son, Bryan A. Edwards of Harrisburg, N.C.; one sister, Bonnie J. White of Hagerstown; one grandson, Matthew Edwards; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ralph L. Edwards Jr.
Private services will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery. Pastor Gary Keefer will officiate.

Robert W. Burke Jr.
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Robert William Burke Jr., 70, of Upper Marlboro, and formerly of Forestville, Md., died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Calvert County Nursing Center.
Born in 1929 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Robert Sr. and Evelyn Randall Burke.
He was employed as a truck driver for a concrete company before retiring.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea.
He was a member of the VFW in Forestville.
He is survived by a son, Robert Burke III of Stevensville, Md.; four daughters, Patricia Armiger of Port Republic, Md.; Joanne Waltz of Smithsburg; Barbara Gibson of Suitland, Md., and Teresa Webster of Upper Marlboro; a brother, John Burke of Edgewater, Md.; a sister, Jean Palmer of Cheaspeake Beach, Md.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 4. The Rev. Tom Ricker officiated. Burial was in Resurrection cemetery in Clinton, Md., with full military honors by the Marine Corps Honor Guard, MAG-49 DET-A.

Harry J. Helmick
Harry Joseph Helmick, 59, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Colton Villa Nursing Home in Hagerstown.
Born June 9, 1940, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late John Abraham and Bertha Martha Riggleman Helmick.
He was employed by Kenneth Grimm Trucking of Hagerstown. He previously was employed by C. William Hetzer of Hagerstown and Bowman Trucking of Williamsport.
He was affiliated with Assemblies of God Church. He was an ordained minister with Full Gospel Chapel, Indian Springs, Md. He ministered in nursing homes in the county.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Virginia Funk Helmick; a daughter, Linda D. Webster of Upper Strasburg, Pa.; a sister, Berthaleen McCusker of Hagerstown; two brothers, Frank Helmick of Hancock and John Helmick of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and 10 brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Carl Harper will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.
