Anthony V. Campbell
Anthony Valentine Campbell, 84, of 541 Maryland Ave., died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 8, 1915, in Ronceverte, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lewis Preston and Sobina Bowen Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle Campbell.
He retired from Maryland Ribbon and Burlington Mills.
He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.
He was a member of B.P.O. Elks 378, Loyal Order of Moose 212 and R.S.V.P.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Evelyn Campbell; four daughters, Nondis Lorene Chesnut of Florida, Millie Hinckle Reid of Falling Waters, W.Va., Patricia Ann Hendricks and Grace Marie Morgan, both of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Barbara L. Griffin of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Anthony Eugene Campbell of Covington, Va., and James Preston Campbell of Hagerstown; one stepson, Robert Leo Ludy of Phoenix, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry W. Campbell; one stepdaughter, Sandra Beasley; a grandson, and a granddaughter.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shanklin Funeral Home, 17 Mountain, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The Rev. Lewis Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in Rosewood cemetery in Lewisburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., in Hagerstown and Thursday at Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs from 10 to 11 a.m.
A memorial service will be held today at 7:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate.

Virginia A. Gilroy
Virginia Alice Gilroy, 87, of 905 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.
Born April 4, 1913, in Rockland, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Martha Scully Ford.
Her husband, John Patrick Gilroy, died in 1999.
She was a retired elementary teacher with the Washington County Board of Education.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.
She was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. She served as recreation director at Walter Reed Army Hospital for the American Red Cross during World War II.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann E. Wells of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Sharon C. Brown of Hagerstown; one son, Patrick J. Gilroy of York, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Oswald P. Vogl
Oswald Paul "Doc" Vogl, 83, of 20851 Old Forge Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born April 23, 1917, in Harrington, Del., he was the son of the late John A. and Wilhelmina Trager Vogl.
He attended Delaware schools.
He owned and trained thoroughbred racehorses in the Tri-State area, retiring in 1984.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Jane Swisher Vogl; a son, Alan Wayne Vogl of Hagerstown; two brothers, Alexander Vogl of Harrington and Levi Vogl of Smyrna, Del.; nieces and nephews; and Barbara S. MacMichael of Smithsburg, whom he raised.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery in Waynesboro, with military services by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Alvin F. Thumma Jr.
Alvin Frederick "Fred" Thumma Jr., 78, of 13846 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 13, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Alvin Frederick Thumma Sr. and Emma Katherine Thumma.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ann Thumma, in 1998.
He was a 1939 graduate of Hagerstown High School; and a 1943 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He graduated from General Motors Institute.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He joined his father in the Thumma Motor Co. Buick dealership. He retired as president and treasurer of Thumma Motors in 1986.
He was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, was a Sunday school teacher and on the church board. He was on the Steering Committee of New Horizon senior citizen group.
He was a member of Masonic Friendship Lodge 84 AF & AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; American Legion Morris Frock Post 42; BPO Elks 378; a former member of Moose Lodge 212; Exchange Club of Hagerstown; Hagerstown Lions Club; Beaver Creek Country Club; and Waynesboro Country Club. He had served as a director on the board of Farmers and Merchants Bank.
He is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Stouffer of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Alvin F. Thumma III.
A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, Mulberry and Washington streets.
A private graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown, where Masonic Friendship Lodge 84 AF & AM will conduct a service at 7 p.m.

Carolyn E. Shifler
Carolyn Elizabeth Shifler, 61, of 9714 Crystal Falls Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Johns Hopkins Bay View Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born March 9, 1939, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Nettie Elizabeth Weaver Bowers of Hagerstown and the late Glenn L. Bowers Sr.
She was a homemaker.
She formerly attended Black Rock Bible Church.
She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Carroll E. Shifler; a daughter, Carla Jo Bitner of Hagerstown; a stepdaughter, Penny Lynn Bowers of Hagerstown; a stepson, Michael A. Shifler of Hagerstown; two sisters, Joann Rowland of Williamsport and Virginia Deal of Boonsboro; three brothers, Charles Bowers, Glenn Bowers Jr. and Joseph Bowers, all of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Cheryl E. Deal.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. The Rev. Paul W. Heefner will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek cemetery near Hagerstown.
