WILMA M. FRIEND
Wilma M. Friend, 72, Oakland, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born on Jan. 4, 1936, in Deer Park, she was a daughter of the late Allen and E. Mable (Bittinger) Timmerman.
She attended the Deer Park United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, P. Martin Friend; one daughter, Paula M. Stacy and husband Chad, Quitman, Ga.; one sister, Helen Clary, Oakland; two brothers, Harold Timmerman, Mtn. Lake Park, and George Timmerman, LaCenter, Wash.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Saturday, May 31, with Rev. Gail Hixon officiating.
Interment was held in the Glendale Cemetery, Swanton.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Rev. Gail Hixon’s ministry, 2461 Swallow Falls Road, Oakland, MD 21550.
DANNY M. BENSON
Danny M. Benson, 86, Oakland, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 8, 1922, in Terra Alta, W.Va., he was a son of the late Albert Daniel and Nell Grace Naylor Benson. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Stemple and Louise Sanders.
He was a member of the Terra Alta Baptist Church. He graduated from Terra Alta High School in the class of 1941. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, where he served in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
He was a meat cutter for over 60 years, and retired from Giant Foods in Springfield, Va. He was a life member of the VFW Post #578, American Legion, Oakland, the Terra Alta Moose Lodge, and the Oakland Elks #2481.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie E. Benson; one daughter, Laura Beth, Terra Alta; one sister, Ethel B., Melbourne, Fla.; two grandchildren; five step-children, Cathy Helbig, Sharon Fulk, Becky Baird, Charlie Ahern, and Michael Ahern; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was held on Saturday, May 31, with Rev. Michael L. Daniels officiating.
Burial followed in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
NORMA L. KOSLAP
Norma L. Koslap, 87, Oakland, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born on Oct. 22, 1920, in Red House, she was a daughter of the late Carl A. and Anna E. (Bachtel) Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John J. Koslap, in 1992; her stepmother, Pearl (Snyder) Martin; three brothers, Alvin Martin, Denver Martin and Randell Martin; and three sisters, Rhea Brady, Eva Martin and Eula Samra.
She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Red House, and worked for the Woolen Mills Knitting Factory.
She is survived by two sisters, Vida I. McCrobie, Oakland, and Blanche A. Kiser, Oakland; five half-sisters, Judy Umstot, Oakland, Elma Rodeheaver, Cumberland, Dean Wilson and Kela Martin, both of Mtn. Lake Park, and Lenora Reams, Oakland; one half-brother, C. Dennis Martin, Fairplay; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held on Sunday, June 1, with Rev. Marjorie Lauver officiating.
Interment was held in the Red House Cemetery.
DELBERT D. SWARTZENTRUBER
Delbert D. Swartzentruber, 78, Oakland, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at his residence.
Born April 12, 1930, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Harvey D. "Hub" and Nellie G. (White) Swartzentruber.
Delbert worked at Timken & Republic Steel in Massillon, Ohio, and also served as a Garrett County sheriff’s deputy for eight years.
He was a retired truck driver, Army veteran of the Korean War, and a Master Mason of Oakland Masonic Lodge #192 AF&AM and Order of Eastern Star. Delbert was also a life member of the Oakland American Legion and Oakland Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Doris L. (Glover) Swartzentruber, Oakland; two sons, Dennis G. Swartzentruber and wife Jeanette, Key West, Fla., and Dan A. Swartzentruber and wife Kathy, Oakland; two daughters, Dani Sue Miller and husband Clayton, and Diana Lyn Heilig and husband Rob, all of Oakland; two sisters, Deloris Moyer and Lois Swartzentruber, both of Oakland; and eight grandchildren.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held in the chapel on Monday, June 2, with the Rev. Scott Robinson officiating.
Interment followed in Garrett Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Garrett County.
NORMAN C. POHLAR
Norman Charles Pohlar, 73, Mtn. Lake Park, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at his residence.
Born June 25, 1934, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Charles Edward and Mary (Daugherty) Pohlar. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Pohlar.
He retired from the home remodeling business and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He is survived by three daughters, Wendy Cardiff, Mtn. Lake Park, Theresa Applegate, Granville, Ohio, and Victoria Tiemeyer, Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Pauline Kenyon, Westminster; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Oakland.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, June 4, at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Oakland, with the Rev. Fr. Don Parson as celebrant.
Interment followed in Garrett Memorial Gardens.
LEROY J. FRIEND Sr.
Leroy John Friend Sr., 73, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 24, 1935, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Albert Friend and Gladys V. Wilson Friend Joslin. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Friend.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Terra Alta. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Island Creek Coal, North Branch, and was a member of Local 2478, UMWA, Bayard, W.Va. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rheba Dawn Friend; two sons, Leroy John Friend Jr., Oakland, and Sidwell Friend, Oakland; three daughters, Brenda Yommer, Loch Lynn, Jennifer Propps, Inwood, W.Va., and Marta Friend, Friendsville; three brothers, Arthur Friend, Beltsville, Henry Friend, Greenwood, Ind., and George Friend, East Stroudsburg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, and at the First United Methodist Church, where a service was held on Wednesday, June 4, with Rev. Michael L. Daniels officiating.
Burial followed in the Terra Alta Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by Preston County VFW posts and the W.Va. Honor Guard.
Frederick G. Tichnell
Frederick Grant Tichnell, 80, Rowlesburg, W.Va., died Sunday, June 1, 2008, in Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Nov. 23, 1927, in Osage, W.Va., Frederick was a son of the late George O. and Opal M. Plum Tichnell. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Duncan Tichnell; one grandson, Jeffrey Tichnell; his step-father, Bruce Burns; and three sisters, Burl Tichnell, Mildred Tichnell, and Hazel Jo Hatcher.
Frederick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He worked as an industrial electrician for U.S. Steel, International Salt Company, General Motors, Bausch & Lamb, Greer Industries, and Mettiki Coal Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean conflict. He attended and volunteered his time to the Flag Chapel United Methodist Church.
Frederick is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Tina Sigley Tichnell; two sons and spouses, George and Barbara Tichnell, Port Orange, Fla., and Frederick and Jane Tichnell, Aurora, W.Va.; one sister and spouse, Gloria and Paul Nestor, Dayton, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Ruth Tichnell, Rowlesburg; five grandchildren, George Tichnell, Lacy Tichnell, Melanie Tichnell, Billie Wiltison, and Waylon Kitzmiller; and three great- grandchildren, Ethan Glotfelty, Riley Wiltison, and Abigail Kitzmiller.
Friends were received at the Browning Funeral Home, Burke Chapel, Rowlesburg, where a service was held on Wednesday, June 4, with Rev. Orville Davis officiating.
Interment followed in the Flag Chapel Cemetery in Rowlesburg.

Beatrice M. Stevens
Beatrice Marie (Daugherty) Stevens, Accident, died on June 1, 2008.
She was preceded in death by one husband, John Stevens.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Stevens; one stepson, Kraig Stevens; one sister, Georgetta Mauler; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren
A service was held at the family owned Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, Dundalk, today, Thursday, June 5.
Interment was held in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
GRETNA M.R. SNEAD
Gretna Marie Reckart Snead, 86, Oakland, formerly of Unity Manor, Morgantown, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born July 21, 1921, in Cuzzart, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Jonathan L. and Ida M. Livengood Reckart.
She retired from West Virginia University, where she worked as a custodian at Arnold Hall for many years.
She is survived by one sister, Genevieve Friend, Oakland; one brother, Darvin Reckart, Cuzzart; three nieces; and six nephews.
At her request her body was cremated, with service provided by Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, as well as burial at the Centenary Cemetery.
Hastings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
