Helen J. Lawrence
Helen Jane Lawrence, 85, of 321 Linganore Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 20, 1915, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George Fred Sr. and Katie Lenore Schindel Dieterich.
Her husband, George Henry Lawrence, died March 29, 1984.
She graduated from Hagerstown High School.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Fisher Bible Class, and taught in the Sunday School Cradle Roll Department.
She was a member of MADD of Western Maryland.
She is survived by four daughters, Barbara Jane Myers of Greencastle, Pa., Sara Catherine Ridenour of Smithsburg, Margaret Ellen Barnhart of Waynesboro, Pa., and Jeanne Marie Small of Hagerstown; a son, Robert Lee Lawrence Sr. of Hagerstown; a sister, Mary Catherine Kitchen of Hagerstown; two brothers, George Fred Dieterich Jr. and Emory Odell Dieterich, both of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Revs. David B. Kaplan and Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Richard J. Bast
BRUNSWICK, Md. - Richard Jude Bast, 62, of 606 W. "B" Street, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md.
Born Jan. 31, 1938, in South Bend, Ind., he was the son of the late Leonard Joseph and Edna Catherine Peters Bast.
He was a 1955 graduate of Adams High School, South Bend. He attended Notre Dame University and graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
He was employed by the CIA; Library of Congress; and was currently employed at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in Rockville, Md.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus and was active in Cub Scouts.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mack Bast; three sons, twins, Gregory Bast and Jeffrey Bast, both of Waldorf, Md., and David Bast of Clinton, Md.; four stepsons, Alan Truelove of Safety Harbor, Fla., Andrew Jahnke of Frederick, Md., John Jahnke of Brunswick, and Christopher Jahnke of Lititz, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Kathryn Brigitte Sawicki of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Brunswick. The Rev. Larry J. Gesy will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Petersville, Md.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The funeral home will be open Wednesday from 9 a.m. A Christian wake service will be conducted Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

James J. Shirey
MAUGANSVILLE, Md. - James Jacob Shirey, 72, of Weaver Avenue, died Sunday, May 21, 2000 at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 28, 1928, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late James J. Shirey Sr. and Mabel Ponesmith Shirey.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School; earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., and did graduate work at American University in Washington, D.C.
He was an accountant until his retirement in 1992. He was a vice president at W.D. Byron and Sons Inc. in Williamsport and a vice president of T.H. Compton Inc. in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. He was a member of the boards of directors for both companies.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the Philippines and with the occupation forces in Japan following World War II. Recalled during the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Air Force, stateside.
He was a member of Zion Reformed Church in Hagerstown, was a deacon and church treasurer.
He was a member of the Rotary Club, Alsatia Club, B.P.O. Elks 378 and Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne L. Lightner Shirey; one son, James Jacob Shirey Jr., of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one sister, Jean F. Rider of Vero Beach, Fla.; one brother, David C. Shirey of Centreville, Md.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Zion Reformed Church. The Rev. Harold E. Posey will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Thursday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Robert F. Gauss Sr.
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Robert Frederick Gauss Sr., 62, of W. Main St., died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Gettysburg (Pa.) Hospital.
Born Feb. 21, 1938, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late H. Frederick Gauss and Virginia Harrison Gauss Hilleary.
He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1956. He attended night college courses at Penn State and John Hopkins University.
He was a professional land surveyor. He founded Robert F. Gauss and Associates Inc. in 1980, and was president.
He was past chairman and a member of the Appalachian Chapter of the Maryland Society of Surveyors. He was named 1997 Surveyor of the Year, and was appointed by the governor to the State Board for Professional Land Surveyors in 1999.
He was a member of Emmitsburg Lions Club, Emmitsburg Business and Professional Association, Mason-Dixon Line Preservation Partnership, American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, National Eagle Scout Association and Emmitsburg Historical Society. An Eagle Scout, he was a former leader of Boy Scout Troop 284.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Crystal L. Wiley Gauss; three sons, Robert F. Gauss Jr. of Emmitsburg, James E. Gauss of Waynesboro, Pa., and J. Christopher Gauss Sr. of Cascade; a sister, Nancy Penrod of Brick, N.J.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a niece, and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Incarnation United Church of Christ, 124 W. Main St., Emmitsburg. The Rev. Margaret Dodds will officiate. A luncheon will follow at The Carriage House Inn, South Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg.

Barbara L. Cavender
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Barbara Lee Cavender, 42, of Flagstaff, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000.
Born Feb. 4, 1958, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth R. and Mary Calhoun Cavender.
She received an AAS in Legal Assistance in May 1997; and an Associate of Liberal Arts degree in May 1999 from San Juan College in Farmington, N.M.
She worked as a paralegal.
She is survived by a daughter, Jessie Deal; two sons, Bryan Deal and Kevin Deal; three sisters, Pat Bailey, Brenda Clever and Deborah Jordan; and a brother, Kenneth Robert Cavender II.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Greenlawn cemetery in Williamsport.
