FREDERICK, Md. - A. Maxine Rudy, 84, of 115 W. Fourth St., who died Sunday, April 2, 2000, was employed as a waitress at Francis Scott Key Hotel in Frederick until her retirement.
Chester L. Jacobs
Chester L. Jacobs, 58, of Belvedere Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Sept. 27, 1941, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clayton E. Jr. and Juanita J. Davis Jacobs.
He was employed by North American Rod and Gun Club in Hagerstown.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of North American Rod and Gun Club of Hagerstown; American Legion Post 10 of Boonsboro; AMVETS Post 10 of Hagerstown; South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg; Moose Lodge 2435 of Funkstown; and Goodwill Athletic Association of Hagerstown.
He is survived by two sisters, Patricia A. Willard of Foxville, Md., and Sharon L. Hurley of Smithsburg; two brothers, Ronald L. Jacobs of Petersville, N.Y., and David E. Jacobs of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Garry L. Jacobs.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
William R. McAfee
FOXVILLE, Md. - William R. McAfee, 78, of Foxville Road, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Oct. 3, 1921, in Foxville, he was the son of the late Raymond Broadbeck and Bessie McAfee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline C. Toms McAfee, in 1999.
He retired from Moore Business Forms in Thurmont, Md.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He attended Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Foxville.
He was a member of American Legion Post 168 of Thurmont.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon L. Kline of Smithsburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry R. McAfee.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Foxville. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.
Helen J. Charlton
HANCOCK - Helen J. Charlton, 88, formerly of Rice Road, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown.
Born Jan. 4, 1912, in Warfordsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank Raymond and Edna Ellen Hendershot Spiker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lewiston Charlton, in 1962.
She had been employed by Jacob Brothers in Hancock as a seamstress. She was a homemaker.
She was of the Presbyterian faith.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Delma Smith of Baltimore; stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Warfordsburg Presbyterian Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at noon.
Janet L. Garber
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Janet Louise "Jan" Statler Garber, 76, of Albuquerque, and formerly of Galveston, Texas, and Marion, Pa., died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, in Albuquerque following a stroke.
Born Dec. 20, 1923, in Marion, she was the daughter of the late Percy P. and Mary Elizabeth Small Statler.
Her husband, E. Peter Garber M.D., died in 1990.
She was a registered nurse.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Galveston, and worked with the missionary aid program.
She was active in Junior League; Galveston Republican Women's Club and served as treasurer; Galveston County Medical Auxiliary; and League of Women Voters.
A hospital volunteer, she assisted terminally ill patients.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Catharine Garber of Arlington, Va.; three sons, Bennett S. Garber and E. Peter Garber Jr., both of Albuquerque, and John L. Garber of Houston; three sisters, Catherine Hicks, Beulah Burkholder and Betty Walter, all of Greencastle, Pa.; three half-sisters, Vera Farren of Chambersburg, Pa., Patricia Brechbiel of Greencastle and Judith Williams of Frederick, Md.; a grandson; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Statler and Harry Statler; and her uncle and aunt, John C. and Catharine Sellers Leithiser, who raised her after her mother's death.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Norland cemetery in Chambersburg. The Rev. William Harter will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Northern Virginia Chapter, 124 Park St. SE, Vienna, VA 22180.
Local arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.
Louis E. Weston Jr.
Louis E. Weston Jr., 75, formerly of 9 Cypress St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1924, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Louis E. Sr. and Margaret Weston.
He retired as a tailor with a clothing manufacturer in Philadelphia.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.
He is survived by an adopted son, Andre' L. Rice Sr. of Falling Waters, W.Va.; and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown, at a later date.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
