Charles D. Mathews Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Charles David Mathews Sr., 83, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 14, 1916, in Benton, Ark., he was the son of the late Charles Winston and Allie Odelia Browning Mathews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl Lowe Mathews, in 1965.

He graduated from Hornbeck High School in Louisiana; and attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

He retired from Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in Cumberland, Md., where he worked as a tooling engineer and in quality control.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his second wife, Doris Elrick Mathews, whom he married Dec. 18, 1971; a son, Charles David Mathews Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; two stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Bunch; and a brother.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Suite 306B, Hagerstown, MD 21740; or Arthritis Foundation, 22 S. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

G. Frances Litten

WILLIAMSPORT - G. Frances Litten, 85, of Williamsport, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her home.

Born May 10, 1914, in Mount Jackson, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Elsie Davenport Newlin Litten.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Franklin Litten, in 1997.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Downsville Church of the Brethren, Williamsport.

She was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion Auxiliary and Red Feather Council 59 Degree of Pocohontas IORM, both of Williamsport.

She is survived by a daughter, E. Eileen Plotner of Fayetteville, Pa.; three sons, Charles W. Litten of Williamsport, Robert S. Litten and Carl F. Litten, both of Fairplay; four sisters, Ruth Martin of Martinsburg, W.Va., Mary Eikelberger of Chatanooga, Tenn., Hazel Long of Williamsport and Mae Haywood of Hagerstown; three brothers, Benjamin Litten of Boonsboro, Rowland Litten and Norman Litten, both of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 13 stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dora L. Eackle; four brothers, Claude Litten, Sidney Litten, John Litten and William Litten; and a granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The Rev. Jerry Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in Manor cemetery in Tilghmanton, Md.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 9 a.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Robert F. Stanton

RANDALLSTOWN, Md. - Robert Franklin Wilson Stanton, 72, of Randallstown, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at his home.

Born Jan. 31, 1928, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry Howard and Annie S. Jones Stanton.

He worked as a groom at Maryland race tracks.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by four sisters, Ruth Stanton Curry and Agnes McDonald, both of Charles Town, W.Va., Mary C. Brooks of Middleburg, Va. and Margaret Hollingsworth of Atlantic City, N.J.; and three brothers, William Stanton of Charles Town, Claude Stanton of Ranson, W.Va. and Charles Stanton of Charleston, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Davenport, Carrie Jackson and Anna Morris; and three brothers, Clarence Stanton, Samuel A. Stanton and Thomas R. Jones.

Services will be private.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 21, at 1 p.m., at Albert P. Wylie Funeral Home, 638 N. Gilmore St. in Baltimore.

Gladys L. Poffenberger

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Gladys Leonard Poffenberger, 80, of Silver Spring, died of cancer at her home Tuesday, March 14, 2000.

Born Sept. 8, 1919, in Fancy Gap, Va., she was the daughter of the late Wiley V. and Jeanette Payne Leonard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Poffenberger. They were married in 1947.

She was a graduate of Dublin High School in Harford County, Md., and a 1942 graduate of Maryland University School of Nursing.

She worked on the family farm; at the infirmary of University of Maryland in College Park, Md.; and for Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md., retiring in 1984.

She was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Burtonsville, Md., was active in Lutheran Church Women; and was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring.

With Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capitol she was a volunteer leader, council committee and board member and delegate to national conventions. She received the Girl Scout Thanks Badge, and the Lamb Scouting Award from the Lutheran church. She was active in Fairland Homemakers Club, and served as president.

She was a member of Montgomery County Agricultural Center and was millinery department chairwoman at the fair. She helped with Red Cross blood drives, was camp nurse for Girl Scout and school groups, and was active in local nursing clubs and Maryland University School of Nursing Alumni Association.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Foreman of Durham, N.C., and Gail Yeiser of Arnold, Md.; four grandchildren, Matthew Foreman, Jennifer Foreman, Emily Yeiser and Amy Yeiser; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin A. Leonard.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring.

Burial will be private.

Visitation will be today from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Sarah M. Iselin

BIG POOL - Sarah Margaret Iselin, 76, of Pecktonville Road, who died Monday, March 13, 2000, was employed from the 1940s to the 1970s, working as a waitress at the time of her retirement.

She is survived by one sister, Cathryn Victoria Smith of Charles Town, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.

Dorothy A. Stover

WILLIAMSPORT - Dorothy Annette Stover, 83, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Homewood of Williamsport.

Born Jan. 18, 1917, in East Liverpool, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Carl H. and Vernie Conner Mawhorter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Earl Stover, U.S. Navy retired.

She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution in Sonoma, Calif.; and a Daughter of the Magna Carta.

She is survived by three nieces, Judy Pharr, Jane Hawley and Kim Stewart.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Cowell; and a brother, Karl Conner Mawhorter.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Donelson National cemetery in Dover, Tenn.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
