John A. Swailes
DARLINGTON, Md. - John A. Swailes, 89, of Darlington, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000.
Born Dec. 26, 1910, in State Line, he was the son of the late George William and Anna Pearl Deck Swailes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys V. Mellott Swailes, in 1990.
He worked at Blue Ridge Flooring in Darlington, until his retirement.
He is survived by a sister, Florence L. House of Hagerstown; a brother, William R. Swailes of Mercersburg, Pa.; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main St. in Delta, Pa. The Rev. Howard J. Cilento will officiate. Burial will be in Harford Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen, Md.
The viewing will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Cyrus W. Hays
SMITHSBURG - Cyrus W. Hays, 62, of 54 S. Main St., died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 1, 1937, in Wolfsville, he was the son of Annie Laura Winfield Hays of Smithsburg and the late Harry M. Hays.
He was a 1955 graduate of Middletown High School.
He was self-employed in the home improvement business.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Garfield United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Patsy A. Davis Hays; two daughters, Theresa E. Holsinger of Maugansville and Sandra K. Russell of Smithsburg; a son, Timothy W. Hays of Hagerstown; three sisters, Josephine Buhrman of Foxville, Md., Isabel Stottlemyer of Sabillasville, Md. and Mary Ann Wiles of Myersville, Md.; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; nieces; nephews; and Elizabeth Peloquin and Jeremy Peloquin, whom he raised.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. Pastor Mark C. Mooney will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Robert L. Lambert
MAUGANSVILLE - Robert Levine Lambert, 68, of 13840 Countryside Drive, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Clearview Nursing Home in Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 27, 1931, in New Windsor, Md., he was the son of the late Mahlon and Bessie Stem Lambert.
He retired from the maintenance department of Nichol's department store in Hagerstown.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He attended Harvest Baptist Church in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Turfle Lambert; three daughters, Debra L. Mogard of Denver, Jessie Holland Lambert of Maugansville and Julie M. Kershner of Williamsport; two sons, Wyatt Neil Lambert of Hagerstown and Wayde Preston Lambert of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Irene Stem of Westminster, Md.; a brother, Richard Stem of Glydon, Md.; and a half-brother, Frank Lambert of Westminster; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Levine Lambert; two sisters, Carrie Mae Lambert and Catherine Chew; a half-brother, Edward Lambert; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown. Pastor James E. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Friday at noon at the funeral home.
Mary R. Evans
BOONSBORO - Mary Rowland Evans, 88, of 8507 Mapleville Road, and formerly of East Church Street in Frederick, Md., and Bel Air, Md., died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Fahrney-Keedy Home near Boonsboro.
Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Bel Air, she was the daughter of the late John Alexander and Helen Gough Boulden Evans.
She retired as office manager of Golbert's Clothing Store in Frederick.
She was a former member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick.
She is survived by a cousin, John E. Dallam of Baltimore.
Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church cemetery in Forest Hill, Md. The Rev. Mark Gatza will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.
David G. Netz Sr.
David Grover Netz Sr., 67, of 15739 Spade Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Colton Villa Nursing Home in Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Brownsville, Md., he was the son of the late John Roscoe Netz and Katharine Eline Durbin Netz Bailey.
His wife, Mitzie Marie Yeager Netz, died in 1997.
He retired in 1992 from Fayetteville Construction Co. in Fayetteville, Pa.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Church of God in Clear Spring.
He is survived by four daughters, Lenora Barnhart and Bobbie Bryan, both of Hagerstown, Karen L. Hornbaker of Mercersburg, Pa., and Joyce Mackey of Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, David G. Netz Jr. of Williamsport; two sisters, Catherine Netz of Mount Jackson, Va., and Irene Martin of Hagerstown; one brother, John Netz of St. James; five half-sisters, Barbara Lewis, Margaret Cunningham and Carolyn Gladhill, all of Hagerstown, Bonnie Kellum of Pasadena, Md., and Shirley Burker of Fort Pierce, Fla.; two half-brothers, Roger Netz of Downsville, and Donnie Netz of Hagerstown; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Karn.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 9 a.m.
Leona M. Caldwell
HANCOCK - Leona Marjorie Zimmerman Caldwell, 72, of Orchard Ridge Road, Hancock, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Caballo, N.M.
Born Aug. 12, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Herman Franklin and Etta Mae Zimmerman.
She was employed by McKinley's Food Market in Hancock for more than 20 years; Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., for five years; and at the Rock Shop of Bryce Canyon, Utah, for five summers.
She was a member of Orchard Ridge First Church of God; the Women's Ministries, and played piano for evening services.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, George "Mick" Caldwell; one daughter, Lana Etta Weller of Hancock; two sons, Philip George Caldwell of Martinex, Ga., and Darrell Wayne Caldwell of Hagerstown; one brother, John Herman Zimmerman of Mercersburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Orchard Ridge First Church of God. Pastor Jeffrey Hawbaker will officiate. Private burial will be Thursday.
