Robert V. Johnson
KEEDYSVILLE - The Rev. Robert Victor Johnson, 97, of 5 Columbine Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1903, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Anders Johannesson and Ida Lyckman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Irene W. Johnson, in 1999.
He was a 1930 graduate of Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill.; and a 1933 graduate of Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Grove, Mo.
He was ordained a minister in Pinckneyville, Ill., on June 17, 1933. He pastored at churches in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. His last charge, from which he retried in 1978, included Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Boonsboro, Christ Reformed United Church of Christ in Sharpsburg and Mount Vernon United Church of Christ in Keedysville.
He was a member of Mount Vernon United Church of Christ.
He is survived by two daughters, Irene Ann Misiti of Newburgh, N.Y. and Cynthia E. Dressel of Bethesda, Md.; three grandchildren, Kim Downey of Brookfield, Conn., Denise Sentementes of Trumbull, Conn. and John Robert Misiti of Newburgh; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hilda C. Johnson, Alma Johnson and Anna Wilson; and two brothers, Carl Johnson and Arthur Lyckman.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. The Rev. C. Richard Masters will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Keedysville.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Tom Samet
FREDERICK, Md. - Tom Samet, 52, of Frederick, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home, after an 11-month battle with brain cancer.
Born in 1948 in Cleveland, he was the son of Dorothy and Sanford Samet.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree with high honors at Michigan State University, and was student body president. He earned a doctorate in English and American literature from Brown University in Providence, R.I., and served on the editorial staff of Novel: A Forum on Fiction.
He was named vice president of academic affairs, dean of the faculty and professor of English at Hood College in 1995. He previously served as dean of the college of arts and sciences and professor of English at Maryville University in St. Louis; and was associate professor of English and a charter member of the faculty of the Louisiana Scholars' College.
His essays appeared in such publications as Critical Inquiry, The New Republic and Criticism.
He was project director of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Holocaust Memorial Observance in 1992.
He held fellowships from Brown University; Rutgers University Research Council; and American Council of Learned Societies. From 1989 through 1990, he was Fulbright Professor of American Literature at the University of Warsaw in Poland. He was a staff assistant in the office of the governor of Michigan in 1970; and a grant consultant to the New Jersey Council on the Arts in 1982.
He was on the editorial advisory board of Explorations journal of the humanities and social sciences. He was a speaker at literary conferences and at other universities, including Southwestern Louisiana University and Basil University in Switzerland.
He was a member of professional organizations, including American Conference of Academic Deans; Modern Language Association of America; Maryland Interlibrary Consortium Governing Board; and Central Maryland Consortium.
The Hood College Board of Trustees recently voted to make him an honorary doctor of humane letters.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Samet; a son, Aaron Samet of Frederick; a niece and a nephew.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Hood College's Coffman Chapel, with a reception to follow at Hood's Whitaker Campus Center, Campus Commons Room.

Elizabeth E. Crabb
Elizabeth Eira Crabb, 91, of 20422 Holt Circle, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 28, 1908, in Maesteg, Wales, she was the daughter of the late William and Maria Brown Davies.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Crabb.
She attended Covenant Presbyterian Church.
She was a member of Eastern Star in Johnson City, N.Y.; and East End Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by three sons, W. Gordon Crabb of Hagerstown, T. Brian Crabb of Toronto, Canada and Alan Crabb of Binghamton, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alvine M. Crabb.
Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 11833 Greenhill Drive, Hagerstown. The Rev. George W. Evans will officiate.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

Mary R. Frazee
Mary Rita Frazee, 81, formerly of Marbern Road, Hagerstown, and of Avalon Manor, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Piedmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Ida Martin Walsh.
Her husband, Virgil David "Bud" Frazee, died in 1983.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Halfway.
She was a member of AARP.
She is survived by a son, John T. Frazee of Halfway; and a brother, Leo Walsh of Titusville, Fla.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 9 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Christopher P. Moore will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Hazel M. Harvey
Hazel Marie Harvey, 73, of 920 View St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.
Born July 27, 1926, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Gertrude Hartley.
She was employed with Vishay Angstroam Precision Inc., retiring in 1993.
She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church.
She was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42 Auxiliary; and AMVETS Post 10 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Marshall Harvey; a daughter, Deborah Kay Zibolsky of Milwaukee; two sisters, Evelyn Smith and Katherine Taylor, both of Hagerstown; a brother, Richard Hartley of Hagerstown; a granddaughter, and a great-grandson.
There will be no service or viewing.
