Robert F. Richards Jr.

Robert Franklin "Rob" Richards Jr., 60, of 13205 Woodbine Lane, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000.

Born July 5, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Lucy A. Richards of Gaithersburg, Md., and the late Robert Franklin Richards Sr.

He was a 1962 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College.

He owned and was president of Richards-Wilbert, Inc. in Hagerstown.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club; Assembly Club; AOPA; American Legion; and a past member of Longmeadow Rotary Club. He served on the boards of directors of Wilbert Inc. and Thermoform Plastics Inc.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Kay Pryor Richards; three daughters, Tricia Lin Riser of Hagerstown, Laura Michelle Zorn of Perry Hall, Md. and Janine Kelly Flathman of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, John A. Richards of Potomac, Md. and Charles P. Richards of Clarksburg, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor I. Zuck will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Pegasus Airpark, Inc. (Museum and Education Center), 14235 Oak Springs Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742; or Washington County Historical Society, 135 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Ethel I. Hose

Ethel Irene Hose, 81, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 25, 1918, near Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lincoln and Ida Mae Davis Myers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred B. Hose, in 1974.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Emmanuel Chapel in Smithsburg.

She is survived by three daughters, Jane M. Weaver of Hagerstown, Betty F. Ryan of Cearfoss and Nancy L. Long of Pinesburg, Md.; two sons, Kenneth R. Hose of Williamsport and Alfred D. Hose of Maugansville; a sister, Myra Jane Taylor of Hagerstown; a brother, Carl Lloyd Myers of Williamsport; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Broadfording cemetery in Hagerstown. Pastor Jonathan Laye will officiate.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The funeral home will be open Saturday after 9 a.m.

William J. Flittie

William Jorgen Flittie, 80, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 23, 1919, in Brookings, S.D., he was the son of Theodore Ignatius and Grace Gilliland Flittie of Wessington Springs, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hanten Flittie, in 1994. They were married in 1951.

He attended South Dakota State University; Southern California University; and the Law School of Minnesota University. He received a combined degree of bachelor of science in laws in 1946 from Minnesota University. He completed law school at Columbia University in New York City, receiving a bachelor of laws in 1947.

He worked in the State Attorney General's office in Pierre, S.D., as counsel to the State Securities Commission and deputy industrial commissioner. In 1953, he joined the Texaco oil company in Denver, then in Los Angeles, and Chicago. In 1961, he joined the law school faculty at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he taught until his retirement in 1986.

A U.S. Navy veteran he had specialized training as a frogman with an underwater demolition unit, and was commander of a P.T. boat operating the southwest Pacific. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of lieutenant commander.

He is survived by a son, William Hanten Flittie, M.D. of Hagerstown; a brother, Clifford G. Flittie of San Francisco; nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery in Wessington Springs.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Suzanne West

Suzanne West, 75, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Va.

Born Sept. 18, 1924, in Fairmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Carroll N. and Helen Jolliffe Holbert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry J. West.

She was a graduate of Fairmont State College.

She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Stout of Jefferson, Md. and Karen West-Stern of Great Falls, Va.; a sister, Sally Moore of LaVale, Md.; a brother, James Holbert of Bridgeport, W.Va.; and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 10201 Lee Highway, Suite 210, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Arrangements are by Money and King Vienna Funeral Home, Vienna, Va.

Edna M. Shepley

WILLIAMSPORT - Edna Mae Shepley, 86, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Homewood Retirement Center, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Homewood.

Born July 17, 1913, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late George Berkley and Emma Blanche Repp Rohrer.

She retired from Maryland National Bank in Clear Spring.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Clear Spring.

She was a member of American Legion Clear Spring Post 222 Auxiliary; past financial secretary of Clear Spring Volunteer Ambulance Club; a member of Homewood Auxiliary; and AARP.

She is survived by her husband, David Edward Shepley; a son, Douglas E. Shepley of Hagerstown; a sister, Myrtle Catherine Burger of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Nell Rohrer; and two brothers, Mason Martin Rohrer and Herald Leo Rohrer.

Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's cemetery in Clear Spring. The Rev. R. Terrence Foor will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, 211 E. Cumberland St., Clear Spring, MD 21722; or Clear Spring Ambulance Club, P.O. Box 61, Clear Spring, MD 21722.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Betty J. Wade

SMITHSBURG - Betty Jane Ridge Wade, 69, of 39-D N. Main St., and formerly of 11400 Stonecroft Court in Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 1, 1930, in Edgemont, Md., she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Lula E. Schwinger Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Edward Wade, in 1964. They were married Nov. 26, 1949.

She was a homemaker. Earlier, she worked in housekeeping at Camp Louise in Cascade; and as an inspector at Freeman Shoe Co. in Waynesboro, Pa.

She was a member of National AARP; and South Chapter 2977 AARP in Waynesboro.

She is survived by four daughters, Cynthia S. Bennett and Debra A. White, both of Smithsburg, Melissa L. Kimps of Waldorf, Md. and Joan L. Keister of Cascade; a son, Dennis L. Wade of Waynesboro; a brother, Albert E. Ridge of Hagerstown; a half-sister, Christina C. Ridge of Waldorf; a half-brother, George F. Ridge of Harrisburg, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Blake; a brother, Howard Ridge; a granddaughter; and a grandson.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Paul Tobias will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church cemetery in Cascade.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
