Steven B. Garland
Steven Blair Garland, infant son of Sandy Jo Stevens and Jesse Sherman Garland Sr. of Berger Avenue, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
He was born Aug. 22, 1999, in Hagerstown.
He is survived by a brother, Jesse Sherman Garland II at home; paternal grandfather, James David Garland Sr. of Hagerstown; paternal grandmother, Anna Mae Thompson of Hagerstown; maternal grandfather, Albert E. Stevens of Sykesville, Md.; maternal grandmother, Brenda J. Stevens of Hagerstown; maternal step-grandfather, John Sprankle of Hagerstown; paternal step-grandmother, Deborah Garland of Hagerstown; aunts; uncles and cousins.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. The Rev. Charles J. Barney will officiate.
The family will receive friends Friday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

David R. Hartle
CALEDONIA, Miss. - David Reno Hartle, 70, of Caledonia, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Baptist Memorial in Columbus, Miss.
Born May 6, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Hazel Pauline Lum Edgar Hartle.
He was a retired carpenter.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Springs of Gaithersburg, Md. and Linda Stockman of Alabaster, Ala.; a son, Ronald Hartle of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three sisters, Virginia Moyer of Williamsburg, Ky., Pat Biser and Connie Hoffman, both of Hagerstown; and three brothers, Wilbur Hartle of Caledonia, Donald Hartle of Bedford, Va. and Stewart Hartle of Williamsburg.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Frederick C. Newruck
Frederick Charles Newruck, 81, of 43 Catawba Place, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 17, 1918, in Chester, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter W. and Florence Ingram Newruck.
He retired from Norristown (Pa.) State Hospital.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was a member of Evangel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte J. "Jo" Newruck; one son, Frederick C. Newruck Jr. of Richmond, Va.; and two granddaughters, Stephanie L. Newruck and Sharon L. Newruck, both of Richmond.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Newruck and Thomas Newruck.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Evangel Baptist Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Ernest W. Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church at 10 a.m. Friday.

James W. Smith Jr.
FREDERICK, Md. - James William "Smitty" "J.W." "Jr." Smith Jr., 69, of 214 E. Fifth St., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Frederick Health Care Center in Frederick.
Born July 27, 1930, in Walkersville, Md., he was the son of the late James W. Sr. and Elsie May Eyler Smith.
He was a plumber with National Institutes of Health, retiring after 22 years.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of AMVETS Post 2 of Frederick; and Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice May Smith; three children, Michael Alan Smith of Frederick, Susan Diane Eppley and Vickie Lynn Taylor, both of Hedgesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Evelyn Lee of Adamstown, Md., and Patsy Mossburg of Frederick; one brother, Ralph L. Smith of Frederick; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Roscoe Smith.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Frederick A. Wenner will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
George J. Smith
George James Smith, 68, of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 1, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George and Gladys Smith.
He attended North Street School.
He was a horse trainer in California, New Jersey, West Virginia and Maryland.
He attended Calvery Holiness Church of Hagerstown.
He is survived by six sisters, Minnie Johnson, Helen Bowers, Marilyn Smith, Elizabeth Smith and Catherine Smith, all of Hagerstown, and Shirley Catoe of Montclair, N.J.; two brothers, Robert Smith and Edward Smith, both of Hagerstown; two aunts; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Smith.
Services will be Friday at noon at Kings Apostle Church, 125 W. Bethel St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Derek Kee will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Hagerstown.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Elizabeth S.H. Nichols
HEATHROW, Fla. - Elizabeth S.H. Nichols, 88, of Heathrow, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at South Seminole Hospital in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Born in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Eutelka Somerville.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Haslacker; and by her second husband, Albert Leroy Nichols.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Ruth Zagrabski; one grandson, Ralph Haslacker; and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by one son, John Haslacker.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill cemetery in Cumberland. The Rev. John J. Duffus will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
