Charles A. Nave
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Charles Arthur "Art" Nave, 78, of 514 Conrad Ave., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
Born June 28, 1921, in Bedford Valley, Pa., he was the son of the late Rufus Doyle and Mary Elizabeth Daehler Nave.
He was a 1939 graduate of Allegany High School, and attended Allegany College.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 in the China-Burma-India Theater.
He retired from Cumberland Fire Dept. in 1983 after 28 years. He was deputy state fire marshal, fire inspector, and was credited with starting one of the first residential fire safety surveys in the country.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
He was a past worshipful master of Ohr Lodge 131 A.F.&A.M.; past patron of McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star; Ali Ghan Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S.; Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J.; Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion; Cumberland Lodge 63 B.P.O.E.; Grand Chapter of Maryland, Order of the Eastern Star; Past Matrons and Patrons Association; Shrine Club Ritualistic Unit; AARP; Allegany Country and Western Dance Club; past president of Belles 'N Beaux Square Dance Club; coordinator for AARP Tax Counseling Service for Senior Citizens; Order of Quetzalcoatl; City Bridge Club; Stock R' Us stock club; Fire Marshals Association of North America; Building Officials Code Administrators of the Upper Ohio Valley; and International Association of Firefighters Local 1715.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva Carrie Lewis Nave; one son, Dennis Arthur Nave of Hagerstown; two brothers, Carl Harvey Nave and Robert Eugene Nave, both of Cumberland; one grandson; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland. The Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich will officiate. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, with military honors by Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with memorial services by McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star at 3:30 p.m.; Ohr Lodge 131 A.F.&A.M. at 7:30 p.m.; and Cumberland Lodge 63 B.P.O.E. at 8 p.m.
Mildred W. Carey
FREDERICK, Md. - Mildred Winifred Carey, 80, of 5785 Box Elder Court, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 13, 1919, in Brunswick, Md., she was the daughter of the late Chester L. and Bertie Snoots Phillips.
Her husband, Harold F. Carey, preceded her in death.
She was a retired sales clerk for J.C. Penney and Rosens in Frederick, Md.
She was a member of Edgewood Church of God in Frederick.
She is survived by two sons, Jan Harold Carey of Pittsburgh, and Jerry Gene Carey of Frederick; one sister, T9C Dinterman of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; two cousins; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Md. The Rev. Duane Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Union cemetery in Lovettsville, Va.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 9 a.m.

Sterling E. Appenzellar
WILLIAMSPORT - Sterling Eugene Appenzellar, 57, of 10716 Bower Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1943, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Betty Jane Appenzellar.
He was employed by Hagerstown Canteen Service, Inc.
A vocalist and musician, he played for churches and civic organizations.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Church of God, Clear Spring.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Appenzellar; three daughters, Karen Appenzellar and Melissa Appenzellar, both of Williamsport, and Lorie Bachtell of Hagerstown; two sons, Steven Appenzellar of Titusville, Fla., and Michael Appenzellar of Maugansville; three sisters, Sarah Price of Hagerstown, Deborah Lawhead of Williamsport and Barbara Hurd of Smithsburg; a brother, Leonard Maffitt of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 9 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Mark C. Mooney will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul L. Jones
Paul Lee Jones, 74, of Heather Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center.
Born June 26, 1925, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Washington and Iva Myrtle Black Jones.
He is survived by two sisters, Margaret K. Schildtknecht and Thelma M. Lum, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
Private graveside services will be conducted at Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.
Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
Viola C. Stevens
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Viola Catherine Stevens, 81, of Ellicott City and formerly of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at her home.
Born Oct. 6, 1918, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late Cy and Mary Ellen Williams Hoffman.
Her husband, Leonard Ned Stevens, died in 1982.
She was a former employee of L'Aiglon Apparel; E.J. Fennel; and Pangborn Corp.
She was a member of VFW Post 1936 Auxiliary.
She volunteered at St. Agnes Hospital; and Little Sisters of the Poor in Baltimore.
She is survived by two daughters, Juliana Judy Miller of Hagerstown and Elizabeth M. Bridgyham of Ellicott City; two sons, Leonard Mark Stevens of Elkridge, Md., and Dennis I. Stevens of Linthicum, Md.; a sister, Rachel Draper of Hagerstown; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy M. Stevens; a son, Kenneth E. Stevens; a sister, Elizabeth Price; and two brothers, William M. Hoffman and Donald Hoffman.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the family will receive friends Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Allison N. McFarland
KNOXVILLE, Md. - Allison Nicole McFarland, 4 months, of 19323 Deer Path, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Born Sept. 23, 1999, in Rockville, Md., she was the daughter of Bret C. and Terri L. Weaver McFarland.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandparents, John D. and Nancy McFarland of Sykesville, Md.; maternal grandparents, Robert and Norma Weaver of Charleston, W.Va.; aunts and uncles.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brownsville Heights cemetery in Brownsville. The Rev. Wendell G. McClellan will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
