Ruth A. Smith
Ruth A. Smith, 88, formerly of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Clearview Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 13, 1911, in Cearfoss, she was the daughter of the late Harry V. and Sarah J. Needy Cearfoss.
Her husband, Lloyd L. Smith, died in 1978.
She had operated Ruth's Deli on Antietam Street; and the Mitchell Avenue Grocery.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, and Willing Worker's Sunday School Class.
She served as chaplain for Potomac Towers and Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy J. Swope of Hagerstown and M. Jean Thomas of Chambersburg, Pa.; a son, Donald L. Smith Sr. of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Edna C. Brinton; and two brothers, John Raymond Cearfoss and Preston I. Cearfoss.
Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. Burial will be in Broadfording Cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Linda D. Cromer
Linda D. Cromer, 53, of 24 Madison Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 5, 1947, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Nancy M. Carpegna Cromer of Hagerstown and the late Roy H. Cromer Jr.
She was a unit clerk at Washington County Hospital, where she worked for 33 years.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She was a member of Western Enterprise Fire Co. Auxiliary.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sisters, Donna L. Kolas of Hagerstown, Sandra L. Iseminger and Donna M. Simon, both of Funkstown; two brothers, Roy H. Cromer III and Steven R. Cromer, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. George Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Gina E. VanWinkle
Gina Elizabeth Shoemaker VanWinkle, 31, of 475 McDowell Ave., Hagerstown, and formerly of Heiple Court, Greencastle, Pa., died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1968, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Richard Eugene and Patricia J. Shoemaker of Hagerstown.
She was a 1987 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.
She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chambersburg, Pa.
She danced with Clarissa's School of Performing Arts.
She was active in Truth for Youth School.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Brian Douglas VanWinkle of Greencastle; two daughters, Elizabeth Roxanna VanWinkle and Kristina Nicole VanWinkle, both at home; a son, Brian Douglas VanWinkle II at home; five brothers, Richard Eugene Shoemaker II, Steven Wayne Shoemaker, Donald Lee Shoemaker, Ronald Lynn Shoemaker and Brent Edward Baker, all of Hagerstown; three aunts; and 14 cousins.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Bishop Bob Fike and the Rev. Kenneth Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grace V. Strike
Grace Viola Strike, 85, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
Born Oct. 4, 1914, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Milton David and Nora Lucretia Etter Strike.
She graduated from St. Thomas Vocational High School in 1931; and Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1944, where she received the Meinicke Surgical Co. Award for suggestions on improving hospital equipment.
She attended Hagerstown Junior College and off-campus courses at University of Maryland and Western Maryland College.
She was employed by Washington County Hospital as assistant director of nursing services and director of student affairs; was on the school of nursing faculty for 21 years. She worked in the post-operative surgical recovery room from 1965 until retiring in 1980.
She was a member of St. Thomas Vocational High School Alumni Association; Washington County Hospital Nurses Alumni Association; Washington County Hospital Auxiliary; Federated Garden Clubs of America, St. Thomas, Pa.; American Legion Post 0612 Auxiliary; Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; Washington County Historical Society, and AARP.
She is survived by two brothers, John Marshal Strike and Arthur Paul Strike, both of Chambersburg; four nieces; one nephew; three grandnieces; two grandnephews; and three great-grandnieces.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. James Young will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.

Earl L. Renner
CLEAR SPRING - Earl Leon Renner, 86, of 14345 National Pike, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born April 21, 1913, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late Blaine Thomas and Amelia Katherine Renner.
His wife, Esther Madeline Renner, died in 1983.
He retired from Fairchild Aircraft.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He is survived by one son, Gregory Renner of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and one grandson, Thomas Blaine Renner of Martinsburg, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Vadia Shriver.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Mary Amundson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery in Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Samuel S. Lewis
Samuel Slaven Lewis, 59, of 1001 Lindsay Lane, Court 4, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born July 22, 1940, in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of Emma Slaven Lewis of Birmingham, Ala., and the late Samuel S. Lewis.
He graduated from the University of Chicago with an MBA.
He was the chief financial officer for Lightning Transportation.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Marie Amato of Hagerstown; two sons, Gregory Lewis and Samuel Lewis Jr., both of Atlanta; and a brother, Ronald Lewis of Birmingham.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Church, 400 Main St., Myersville, Md. The Rev. David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Arlington Heights, Ill.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
