Boyd J. Michael Jr.
BOONSBORO - Boyd John Michael Jr., 70, of 9102 Mapleville Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000.
Born March 7, 1929, in Big Pool, he was the son of the late Boyd John Michael Sr. and Nellie Marie Clopper Michael.
He graduated from Clear Spring High School, Towson State College and the University of Maryland.
He was employed by the Washington County Board of Education as a teacher at North Hagerstown High School, a vice principal and as principal of Boonsboro Middle School, retiring in 1983.
He was elected to the Washington County Board of Education, and served one term. He was a farmer, Christmas tree grower and lumberman.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville; and a trustee and Sunday School teacher.
He was a member of Boonsboro Lions Club; and BPO Elks 378 of Hagerstown.
He served on the Forestry Conservancy Board.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vivian Stone Michael; a daughter, Susan Hoelschen of Wilmette, Ill.; three sons, Boyd John Michael III and Joseph Scott Michael, both of Boonsboro, and Robert Stone Michael of Maugansville; three sisters, Carol Harris and Donna Powell, both of Charlottesville, Va., and Mary Ogle of Stephens City, Va.; three brothers, Andrew J. Michael of Big Pool, Raymond J. Michael of Boonsboro and Larry F. Michael of Clear Spring; and six grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville. The Revs. John W. Schildt and Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown.

Harry E. Hopkins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - Harry Eugene Hopkins, 77, of Whisper Lake Lane, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000.
He was born in Jamesburg, N.J.
He was district service manager for Chrysler Corp.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was a Catholic.
He was a member of Moose Lodge; and Elks Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Lynda Dacenzo of Fairless Hills, Pa., and Holly Hopkins of Winter Park; a son, Harlan H. Hopkins of Hagerstown; a sister, Virginia Sundstrom of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by National Cremation Society Beacon Chapter, Winter Park.
Jeanette C. Shankle
FREDERICK, Md. - Jeanette Cecilia Martin Shankle, 62, of 13 Winchester St., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Washington Hospital Center.
Born Jan. 2, 1938, in Adamstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George Washington Martin and Enid Glenna Pyles Toms.
She was a cook at Homewood Retirement Center; and had been a nurses' assistant and cook at Meridian Nursing Home. More recently, she worked in the kitchen of FSK American Legion Post 11 in Frederick.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Norman Arthur Shankle Jr.; seven children, Larry Lee Shankle of Cliffwood, N.J., Cary Allen Shankle Sr. of Walkersville, Md., Deborah Ann Butler of Braddock, Md., Bruce Alan Shankle of Middletown, Md., and David Arthur Shankle Sr., James Thomas Shankle and Norma Jean Howard, all of Frederick; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Eugene Martin; a sister, Romaine C. Titlow; and her stepfather, Elmer W. Toms.
Services will be Saturday at noon at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St. in Frederick. The Rev. Randall S. Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick.
Friends may call Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home; the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Barbara A. Roach
WILLIAMSPORT - Barbara Ann "Bobbie" Roach, 61, of 11130 Grosh Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at her home.
Born May 13, 1938, in Reisterstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Milton Reichard Moats Sr. and Pearl Arelia Higgins Moats.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Calvary Temple in Williamsport.
She was a former member of Ladies Auxiliary of the North American Rod and Gun Club.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Roger Lee Roach; a daughter, Robin L. Fiddler of Hagerstown; three sons, William D. Shupp of Hagerstown, Donald L. Shupp and Rickie A. Shupp, both of Williamsport; five sisters, Goldie Brown and Betty Hornbaker, both of Williamsport, Garnetta Lockard and Gladys Calandrelle, both of Hagerstown and Patricia J. Gehr of Clear Spring; two brothers, Milton R. Moats Jr. of Fairfield, Calif., and Paul K. Moats of Williamsport; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open today after 9 a.m.

Mary E. Hutchison
Mary Ellen Hutchison, 57, of 603 Sunset Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at her home.
Born Dec. 9, 1942, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Smith and Mary Edwards Smith Bartles.
She attended Hagerstown Community College and Washington Bible College.
She owned and operated Memaw's Day Care Center for 20 years.
She was a member of Grace Brethren Church, and Adult Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband, Aubrey "Bill" Hutchison; two daughters, Karen Lee Hutchison Atkinson and Sherry Allene Hutchison Thompson, both of Hagerstown; a son, Eric Tyler Hutchison of Hagerstown; a sister, Joan Iona Jones of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Jack Bartles.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. J. Norman Mayer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Lena M. Sanders
Lena Marie Sanders, 82, of Holburn Street, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 17, 1917, in Cascade, she was the daughter of the late Boyd Wiles Sr. and Myrtle V. Davis Wiles.
Her husband, Bernard W. Sanders, died in 1968.
She was employed by Fairchild, Fennel Co., Washington County Hospital and Avalon Manor, all in Hagerstown.
She is survived by four daughters, Vera Hartman of Hagerstown, Rose Wiles of Toledo, Ohio, Nancy Snyder of Hagerstown and Shirley Robinson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sons, Paul Sanders of Hagerstown, Boyd Sanders of Nashville, Tenn., and Robert Sanders; a sister, Kathleen Schildt of Hagerstown; a brother, Boyd Wiles Jr. of Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Shank; a son, Donald Sanders; a sister, Gladys Dunham; and a brother, Paul Wiles.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. Pastor Richard A. Gross will officiate. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
