Harry J. Walling
LAVONIA, Ga. - Harry Joseph Walling, 60, of 188 Stillwater Road, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.
Born July 26, 1939, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Henry and Josephine Elizabeth Riley Walling.
He was a member of American Legion, Funkstown Post 211 in Funkstown.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Walling; a stepdaughter, Darlene Beverlin of Missouri; two stepsons, Henry Glines of Hagerstown and Michael Glines of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; four sisters, Anna May Knight, Josephine Elizabeth Divelbiss, Ruth Marie Myers and Doris Lorraine Shatzer, all of Hagerstown; three brothers, Charles Henry Walling, John Edward Walling and George Marshall Walling, all of Hagerstown; step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Billig and Betty Oberholzer, and a brother, James Walling.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. G. David Shreeves will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Velma Viola Jean Harshman
Velma Viola Jean Harshman, 77, of 12042 Mayfair Avenue, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Pinesburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl Leon and Helen Davis Shank.
She was the owner of Jean's Ceramic Hut.
She was a member and a Sunday school teacher at Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville and a member of the AARP.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Russell Harshman; one daughter, Connie L. Anderson of Hagerstown; one son, Ronald L. Harshman of Hagerstown; four brothers, Harold Shank, Leon Shank and Richard Shank, all of Pinesburg, and Eugene Shank of Hagerstown; two sisters, Lillian Scott of Lelo, Kan., and Mary Ward of Warfordsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Lynn, and one brother, Charles Shank.
Services will be held Monday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. today for the convenience of family and friends.

John I. Foster
HANCOCK - John Irby Foster, 81, of Hancock, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 1, 1918, in Newberry, S.C., he was the son of the late Otto Klettner and Cora Lee Spoon Foster.
He attended public schools in Newberry, S.C.
He retired as an automobile salesman in 1977 from Rosenthal Chevrolet in Arlington, Va. He was the first salesperson to work with Rosenthal.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and was stationed at Fort Moultrie, S.C. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines as a private with Company E, 544th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, U.S. Army. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Ribbon, and World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a member of Hancock Memorial VFW Post 10502; and Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post 26, both of Hancock.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary Jean Weller Foster; five daughters, Susan Dvorsky of Latham, N.Y., Julie Tips of San Antonio, Linda Barringer of Dallas, Nancy Fitzgibbon of Herndon, Va., and Lisa Hinsley of San Francisco; six sons, John Foster of Baltimore, Craig Foster of Fairfax, Va., Brian Foster of New York City, John Rodney Foster of Prince Frederick, Md., Gregory Foster of Herndon and Steven Foster of Tysons Corner, Va.; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Keliher of Hagerstown and Francine McCarty of Hancock; three sisters, Katherine George of Taylors, S.C., Lucille Sency of Weatherly, Pa., and Dorothy Brewton of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Russell Foster of Aiken, S.C.; 21 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Klettner Foster, Frank Foster, Stanley Foster and Joe Foster.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St. in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Burial with military honors will be in Rocky Gap Veterans cemetery in Flintstone, Md.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Michael Shepel
BRADDOCK HEIGHTS, Md. - Michael Shepel, of Braddock Heights, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000.
Born in 1924, he was the son of the late George and Emma Shepel.
He was a 1943 graduate of Aliquippa (Pa.) High School. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in science from the University of Pittsburgh.
He was employed as a microbiologist by the U.S. Army at Edgewood Arsenal and Fort Detrick, and acquired several patents for the U.S. government. After retiring in 1989, he operated a specialty food preparation business.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, assigned to the 500th Bombardment Group in the western Pacific, and flew on 33 missions against Japan. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four oakleaf clusters.
He was a member of American Association of Microbiologists; and Eagles Club of Frederick, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Sophie Shepel; two daughters, Marlene Powell of Boonsboro, and Susan Lotfi of Greencastle, Pa.; one son, Robert Shepel of Hagerstown; one sister, Nellie Lampich of Aliquippa, Pa.; one brother, George Shepel of Beaver Falls, Pa.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church, 2200 Main St., Aliquippa.
A viewing will be held at Mastrofrancesco Funeral Home, 2026 McMinn St., Aliquippa, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The Eight Day Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m., at St. Catherine Orthodox Church, 433 Liberty St., Hagerstown.
The Forty Day Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m., at St. Catherine Orthodox Church, 433 Liberty St., Hagerstown.

Charlotte L. Biser
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Charlotte Louise Biser, 64, of 8210B Bolivar Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 14, 1935, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Opal Bircher Sines.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Biser.
She is survived by her companion, Charles W. Stambaugh; two daughters, Linda Payne of Hagerstown and Brenda Frye of Boonsboro; a stepdaughter, Diane Stambaugh of Hagerstown; a stepson, Charles Stambaugh of Hagerstown; three sisters, Ruby Gouker of Rockville, Md., Dottie Poole of Gaithersburg, Md. and Marjorie Rutherford of Hagerstown; three brothers, Robert H. Sines Sr. of Hagerstown, James Sines of Hagerstown and Millard Sines Jr. of Brunswick, Md.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St. in Middletown. The Rev. William M. Bucher will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran cemetery in Middletown.
