MARY BOLDEN HELBIG
One of Garrett County's few centenarians, Mary Bolden Helbig, 100, Oakland, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at her home.
Born June 26, 1901, in Swanton, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth May. Her first husband, Emroy D. Bolden, funeral director and civic founder in projects such as the Oakland golf course, Garrett County Memorial Hospital, and the Oakland fire department, died in 1958. Later she married Carleton Helbig, who died in 1979.
She was a charter member of the Oakland Civic Club and the Loar Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the American Legion. She was also a member of the Maryland Federation of Republican Women, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and the Garrett County Historical Society.
Surviving are three children, Mary V. Murray, Seattle, Wash., and Nancy Helbig and DeCorsey E. Bolden, both of Oakland; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received today, Thursday, Jan. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m., and tomorrow, Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Father John A. Grant officiating.
Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department.

A. GRACE HOOK
A. Grace Hook, 78, Friendsville, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Cuppett & Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Sept. 13, 1923, in Friendsville, she was a daughter of the late James E. and Minnie B. (Reckner) Artice. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Hook, May 30, 1990, and one son, Charles Wayne Hook.
She was a homemaker, a member of Rush Baptist Church, and a Gold Star Mother.
Surviving are three sons, Paul Hook, Accident, and Jimmy D. Hook Sr. and Espy Hook, both of Friendsville; three daughters, Carolyn Conn, Confluence, Pa., and Doris Thomas and Robyn Kisner, both of Friendsville; one sister, Julia Maude Fike, Friendsville; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, where a service was conducted on Saturday, Jan. 19, with the Rev. Ray Perkins officiating.
Interment was in Blooming Rose Cemetery.

ELWOOD F. JAMISON
Elwood F. Jamison, 76, Oakland, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born July 25, 1925, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Carl and Emma (Saucer) Jamison.
He was a retired coal miner, having worked at the Laurel Run Mine, Mt. Storm, W.Va., and was a member of Local #1444, UMWA, Bayard, W.Va. He was a school bus contractor for the Garrett County Board of Education for more than 42 years, drove bus #31-A, and was a member of the Garrett County School Bus Contractor Association.
He received the Purple Heart while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan, during World War II. He was a member of Proctor Kildow Post #71, American Legion, Oakland, and Post #10077, VFW, Deer Park.
Surviving by his wife, Maxine H. (Harvey) Jamison; one daughter, Elaine M. Jamison, Oakland; two sons, Kenneth E. Jamison and Wayne V. Jamison, both of Oakland; two sisters, Betty Jo Grimm, Youngstown, Ohio, and Myrtle Jamison, Cleveland; two brothers, Perry Jamison, Rawlings, and Roger Jamison, Cleveland; seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held today, Thursday, Jan. 24, with the Rev. Mel Menker officiating.
Interment was in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
Military honors were accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans' organizations in southern Garrett County.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Southern Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.

MARY B. LANDON
Mary B. "Peg" Landon, 76, Mtn. Lake Park, died Monday, Jan 21, 2002, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 24, 1925, in Mtn. Lake Park, she was the daughter of the late William E. Landon and Sicela (Martin) Landon.
She was a retired cafeteria manager.
Surviving are three daugh-ters, Sue Hershman, Oakland, Judy Upole, Crellin, and Kathy Carico, Ridgeley, W.Va.; three brothers, William E. Landon, Williamsburg, Iowa, Charles R. Landon, Crown City, Ohio, and Robert M. Landon, Friendsville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was held today, Thursday, Jan. 24, with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating.
Interment was in the White Church Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Ruth Enlow Library or Southern Rescue Squad.

JEFFREY E. LEWIS
Jeffrey Edward Lewis, 31, Corinth, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan 22, 2002, at home. Born Jan. 7, 1971, in Oakland, he was the son of Wellington Paul and Mabel V. Niner Lewis, Corinth.
He was a member of the Corinth United Methodist Church, where he helped with the upkeep of the church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are three sisters, Dorene L. Lewis, Blacksville, W.Va., and Linda S. and Michelle L. Lewis, both of Corinth.
Friends will be received today, Thursday, at Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, W.Va., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday, Jan. 25 at the Corinth United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of the service, with the Rev. Ernest Metheny officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

MABEL B. MARTIN
Mabel B. "Nanny" Martin, 89, Lake Wales, Fla., formerly of Mtn. Lake Park, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Lake Wales Medical Center, Lake Wales.
Born Jan. 2, 1913, in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late Lee M. Bernard and Nellie (Lantz) Bernard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl F. Martin Sr., in 1983.
She attended the First Assembly of God Church, Lake Wales.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Lee Martin and Earl F. Martin Jr., both of Lake Wales; one brother, Lee Bernard, Mtn. Lake Park; two sisters, Nina Callis, Deer Park and Eloise Welling, Mtn. Lake Park; three grand-children; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted on Monday, Jan. 14, with the Rev. David Martin officiating.
Interment was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

GRACE B. McCAIN
Grace Bradnack McCain, 97, Greensboro, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Born April 23, 1904, in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles Barnsley and Minerva Goodenough Bradnack. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Asa Madison McCain Jr., on Dec. 13, 1990, and one granddaughter.
A resident of Washington, D.C., for most of her life, she worked for many years with the U.S. government and was a member of the Universalist National Memorial Church. She was a graduate of Central High School in Washington and a member and supporter of the alumni association. She moved to Greensboro 17 years ago, where she became a member of First Friends Meeting. She was a member of Chapter A of P.E.O., an artist and writer.
Survivors include four children, Asa Madison McCain III, Oakland, Susan M. Callens, Riva, Martha M. Shoemaker, Leesburg, Fla., and Eleanor M. Baker, Greensboro; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Friends Home of Guilford and at the residence of her daughter. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Friends Home of Guilford.
Private interment was held in New Garden Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Residents' Assistance Fund, Friends Home of Guilford, 925 New Garden Road, Greensboro, NC 27410, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

EDWARD J. McMILLAN SR.
Edward J. "Bud" McMillan Sr., 77, Catonsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the VA Medical Center, Fort Howard Hospital, Sparrows Point.
Born March 5, 1924, in Davis, W.Va., he was a son of the late Hugh G. McMillan and Bertha C. (McGowan) McMillan. He was also preceded in death by one son, Gary McMillan.
He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Catonsville. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He retired as a staff sergeant in the U.S. 6th Marine Corps Division. He was wounded in the First Line in Okinawa in the Pacific and spent 18 months in the hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Audrey (Tarun) McMillan; two daughters, Charlene Vensel, Georgia, and Mary Ann Hartlove, Baltimore; one son, Edward J. "Bud" McMillan Jr., Lothian; one sister, Mary Catherine Wiley, Grantsville; one brother, Robert McMillan, Midland; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Family and friends were received at the Sterling-Ashton-Schwabb Funeral Home, Catonsville, where a service was conducted on Friday, Jan. 18, with Brother Declan officiating.
Interment was in Loudon Park Cemetery, Catonsville. Graveside military services were accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard.

WILLIAM D. RYLAND
William Don Ryland, 69, Baltimore, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore.
Born July 15, 1932, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late Russell and Mildred (Bittinger) Ryland. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Russie Ryland.
He was a member of the Masons, Sharon Lodge No. 182, and the Glenmore Rifle and Pistol Club. He retired from Westinghouse after completing 35 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Bachtel) Ryland; one daughter, Donna Lichliter; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

THELMA R. BISER SHAW
Thelma R. Biser Shaw, 85, Rawlings, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born Oct. 3, 1916, in Recluse, Wyo., she was a daughter of the late Ernest E. and Flora (Quinn) Berry. Twice married, she was preceded in death by both husbands, Forrest O. Biser on Dec. 31, 1963, and Rex. R. Shaw on Nov. 22, 1978. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a retired nurse's aide at Potomac Valley Hospital with 31 years of service. She was a member of the Danville Community Church, Rawlings, and was a founding and active member of the Faith In Action Food Pantry.
Surviving are five sons, Forrest O. Biser Jr., Goldsboro, N.C., the Rev. Samuel E. Biser, Burlington, W.Va., the Rev. C. Waco Biser, Rawlings, James A. Biser, Westernport, and Michael B. Biser, Accident; two daughters, Ruth L. Rodeheaver, Vermilion, Ohio, and Mary F. Lamp, Wellington, Ohio; three stepsons, Robert Shaw, Baltimore, Jay Shaw, New Jersey, and Ted Shaw, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Barbara Shaw, Baltimore, and Becky Scott, Moorefield, W.Va.; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Danville Community Church, Rawlings, on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daniel Biser officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.

WILLARD P. TEETS
Willard Paul "Wid" Teets, 83, Terra Alta, W.Va., Cranesville community, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at home.
Born Aug. 18, 1918, in Lake Ford, he was a son of the late Percy and Lulu Hayes Teets.
He was a member of the Lake Ford United Methodist Church, Lake Ford, where he served as a trustee. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during World War II from 1942 until 1945. He was in Troop B of the 38th Cal-vary Recon Squadron in the European theater. He retired from Albright Power Station after 20 years of service. He was also a member of the VFW Post 578, Terra Alta and Aurora, W.Va.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Eleanor V. Windell Teets; two daughters, Wendy Berry, Oakland, and Bobbie Lowdermilk, Clarksburg; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home. A service was con-ducted at the Lake Ford United Methodist Church on Monday, Jan. 21, with the Rev. Berlin Wilhelm offici-ating. Military services were conducted by Preston County VFW posts.

NORMA C. WEEKS
Norma Casteel Weeks, 80, Greensburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Greensburg.
Born March 25, 1921, in Oakland, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret Casteel. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, and one son, John H. Weeks.
She was a graduate of Oakland High School, Oakland. She was a secretary for the WPA office in Oakland. She and her husband L.H. Weeks were married in Oakland on Feb. 2, 1941. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Greensburg.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, L.H. Weeks; one daughter, Suzanne Weeks Wildman, Millinocket, Maine; two sisters, Louise Hood and Gertrude Savage, both of Atlanta; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, Greensburg, today, Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow at the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 15 East Second St., Greensburg, PA 15601, or the Cancer Society of Greensburg.

LENORA I. GAITHER
Lenora I. "Peachy" Gaither, 89, Keyser, W.Va., formerly of Bayard, W.Va., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport.
Born July 16, 1912, in Mill Run, she was the daughter of the late Steven A. and Christina L. (Varner) Bonner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. "Pat" Gaither in 1966; and one daughter, Loretta M. Watkins.
She was a member of the Rees Chapel United Methodist Church, Keyser; a former member of the Bayard United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years; and was a member of the Bayard Older Americans.
Surviving are two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Bayard United Methodist Church on Sunday, Jan. 13, with the Rev. William Anderson and Rev. Barbara Starling officiating.
Interment was in the Bayard Cemetery.

THURSTON G. HAWES
Thurston Graham Hawes, 79, formerly of Grantsville and Ellicott City, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, from kidney failure at Carroll County General Hospital.
Born and raised near Ellicott City, he was a son of the late Horice and Nanny (Carter) Hawes.
He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. After the war, he joined the Maryland State Police in 1946, and retired in 1963, with the rank of lieutenant. He was also employed by the Mass Transit Authority until his retirement in 2000.
He was a member of the VFW in Westminster and Cumberland, a board member of the state of Maryland Credit Union, FOP #76 Troopers Association, the Old Timers Club of World War II, the Old Timers Softball Club, the AARP, and the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mary Alice (Province) Hawes, Pittsburgh; one daughter, Bonnie Braun, Perry Hall; two sons, Richard Hawes, Arnold, and Mike Hawes, Baltimore; one sister, Alice Hawes; one brother, John Hawes; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel. A service was held on Friday, Jan. 11, at Northwest Baptist Church, Sykesville.
Interment was in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.
