Rev. Robert B. Ruble
BALTIMORE - The Rev. Dr. Robert Blair Ruble, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Baltimore.
Born Sept. 6, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of Frank Blaine and Eva Mae Blair Ruble.
He received a bachelor of arts degree from Thiel College in 1950; a bachelor of divinity from Luther Theological Seminary, formerly Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary, in 1953; a master of divinity from Luther Theological Seminary in 1970; and a doctor of divinity from Thiel College in 1976.
He served as parish pastor for Trinity Lutheran Church in Butler, Pa., from 1953 to 1961, Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh from 1961 to 1968, St. John's Lutheran Church in Allentown, Pa., from 1968 to 1974 and First English Lutheran Church in Baltimore from 1974 to 1982. He also served as interim pastor at St. Luke's Church in Derwood, Md.; Peace Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Va.; St. John's Lutheran Church in Rockville, Md.; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frederick, Md.; and Harmony Community Lutheran Church of Myersville, Md., with that service ending in August 1999.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre of Operations from 1943 to 1946.
He was vice president of Medlantic Healthcare Group from 1982 to 1989, and president of The Luther Institute in Washington, D.C., from 1989 to 1998.
He recently served as a consultant for Washington, D.C., Southeast Ministries, and for Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area.
He served in numerous volunteer capacities during his career, including chairman of North Hills Christian Clergy Association; chairman of Allentown Area Lutheran Parish; chairman of Eclectic Club of Baltimore, chairman of Lutheran Hospital Board of Directors; co-founder of Saint Luke Health Ministries, now known as Foundation for Spirituality and Medicine; co-founder of Roland Park Place, a retirement community; and a member of the Board of Directors of Thiel College.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise Arlene Rykhus Ruble; two children, Alicia Ruble of Washington, D.C., and Matthew Ruble of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Virginia Boak; two brothers, James Ruble and John Ruble, both of Youngstown, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Ruble.
A memorial service will be Friday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1415 West 7th St. in Frederick, Md.

Clayton H. Starliper
Clayton H. Starliper, 79, of 1617 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, and formerly of 2425 Hillside Ave., Orange City, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Upton, Pa., he was the son of the late Spirdie W. and Mary Blanche Gearhart Starliper.
He retired in 1971 as a maintenance superintendent from Frick Co. in Waynesboro, Pa. He developed Alpine Mobile Home Park in Lake Placid, Fla.
He was a member of Ebenezer United Brethren Church in Greencastle, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Esther C. Marlin Starliper, whom he married
Sept. 9, 1938; a daughter, Nancy D. Coulter-Brantner of Hagerstown; two sons, Kenneth Ray Starliper of Lake Placid, Fla., and Clarence "Sam" Starliper of Shermansdale, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Lewis of Smithsburg and Helen Gontz of Scotland, Pa.; a brother, Floyd Starliper of Greencastle; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald C. Starliper; three sisters; two brothers; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. in Greencastle. The Rev. Ralph L. Fry will officiate. Burial will be in Brown's Mill cemetery in Antrim Township, Pa.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nicholas J. Slifer
PHOENIX, Md. - Nicholas John Slifer, 9, of Phoenix, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, of congenital heart disease.
He was the son of Yula Ponticas and Keith Slifer.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Efthymois and Chrysoula Carman Ponticas; paternal grandmother, Verle Gross Slifer; aunts and uncles.
Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation. Burial followed in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to Kennedy Krieger School, 1750 E. Fairmount Ave., Baltimore, MD 21231.

Mary V. Doarnberger
Mary Virginia Doarnberger, 86, of 1145 Beechwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at the home of her son in Columbia, Md.
Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Beaver Creek, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Cline.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grason F. Doarnberger, in 1973.
She retired from Hoffman Clothing.
She was a member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by her son, Robert L. Doarnberger of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Sabrina Knouse of Woodstock, Md., Alicia Malinowski of Columbia and Eric Doarnberger of Seattle.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Irvin S. Shank
Irvin S. Shank, 83, of 12349 Huyett Lane, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at the Mennonite Fellowship Home.
Born Feb. 4, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Daniel and Emma Martin Shank.
He was associated with Paramount Interiors in Hagerstown for more than 25 years; and drove a school bus for Washington County Board of Education.
He was a member of Paradise Mennonite Church near Paramount, where he was a minister from 1953 until recently.
He is survived by his wife, Martha E. Risser Shank; two daughters, Carolyn L. Shank of Alexandria, Va., and Joyce E. Martin of Hagerstown; two sons, Richard E. Shank of Hagerstown and Robert L. Shank of Chambersburg, Pa.; one sister, Anna R. Mowen of State Line, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel F. Grove.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Paradise Mennonite Church. The church ministry will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown; and Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Patricia J. Boward
Patricia Jane "Pat" Boward, 69, of 475 McDowell Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 5, 1930, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Howell and Alcie Theresa Mays McElroy.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Fare Jackson; and her second husband, Jack Leroy Boward.
She was employed by Hagerstown Shoe Factory.
She was a member of AMVETS LOLR; and Eagles Club and Owls Club, both of Hagerstown.
She is survived by four daughters, Patricia J. Shoemaker, Brenda A. Baker, Deborah A. Kline and Tena M. Harris, all of Hagerstown; four sisters, Lorraine Sigler, Nancy Sharer and Peggy Young, all of Hagerstown, and Inez Lefkowitz of Baltimore; two brothers, Richard McElroy and Ronald McElroy, both of Hagerstown; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Devona McElroy; a daughter, Teresa E. Barton; a sister, Eunice Eccard; and four brothers, Robert Fout, Joseph McElroy, Kenneth McElroy and Clifford McElroy; and two grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. The Rev. Kenneth Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Linda M. Cook
KNOXVILLE - Linda Marie Cook, 37, of 19638 Yarrowsburg Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Jefferson, Md.
Born April 30, 1962, in Leesburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Leroy Thomas and Jessie Agnas Hackley Virts.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn B. Cook of Hagerstown; two daughters, Jessica Marie Cook and Crystal Marie Cook, both at home; four sisters, Marlene Hawkins of Neersville, Va., Susan Virts of Stafford, Va., Aneada Wiles and Carolyn Virts, both of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three brothers, Roy Virts of Brunswick, Md., Stanley Virts of Harpers Ferry and Marvin Virts of Lovettsville, Va.; and one granddaughter.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Petersville, Md. The Rev. Lawrence J. Gesy will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Petersville.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick.
A Christian Wake service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
