Emerson M. Bowman
BOONSBORO - Emerson M. Bowman, 75, of Lakin Ave. Ext., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 9, 1924, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Morris and Naomi F. Bowman.
He was retired from Washington County Recreation and Parks Service.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, near Smithsburg.
Friends may visit Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Prudence H. Wallace
Prudence Helen Wallace, 82, formerly of Oak Ridge Apartments, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Twin Oaks Retirement Village, Williamsport.
Born July 17, 1917, in Cearfoss, Md., she was the daughter of the late Peter Lesher and Helen Teresa Shank Martin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Elmer Wallace, in 1981.
She was employed as a private practical nurse earlier in her life and also was employed at Hagerstown Rubber Company. She and her husband owned and operated The Midway Motor Court, Hagerstown and she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, Fairview, Md.
She was a volunteer at Western Maryland Hospital Center.
She is survived by one sister, Mary T. Ferrari of Ardsley, N.Y.; two brothers, Carl L. Martin of Outlook Pointed Assisted Living Home, Hagerstown and David H. Martin of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Davis and Leila G. Martin and two brothers, Robert S. Martin and E. Garth Martin.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Mary L. Amundson will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of family and friends the funeral home will be open after 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 East Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to a charity of one's choice.
Gary G. Katzaman
CHESTER, Md. - Gary Gene Katzaman, 53, of Chester, and a former resident of Worchester County, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Easton, Md.
Born May 3, 1946, in Brunswick, Md., he was the son of the late Ralph and Helen Biller Katzaman.
He was a graduate of Harpers Ferry High School.
He worked in the restaurant business for 15 years at various restaurants and later was employed by Hudson Foods in Berlin, Md. He then became the transportation director for Worchester County Department on Aging, Snow Hill, Md. He then worked for Metro Express, Washington, D.C. and later for Yellow Transportation based in Charles County as Transportation Director.
He is survived by his wife, Terri Katzaman, whom he married
in 1990; two step-sons, Nathan Kingery of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Nicholas Kingery of Chester.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Biller.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Nicholas Kingery Education Fund.

Mary C. Unger
HANCOCK - Mary Catherine Unger, 73, of Exline Road, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born May 19, 1926, in Great Cacapon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Cora Dawson Effland.
She was retired from Washington County Board of Education after 20 years of service working in the cafeteria.
She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Hancock Ward and a member of Relief Society of the Church.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Woodrow Harry Unger; four daughters, Kay Horsburgh of Baltimore, Linda Golden of Valrico, Fla., Shirley Michael of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and JoAnn Schetrompf of Hancock; three sons, Duane Unger of Hancock, Rodney Unger of Little Orleans, Md. and Michael Unger of Warfordsburg, Pa.; one sister, Wilma Unger Largent of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Dale Golden, four brothers, Gerald Effland, Junior Effland, Donald Effland and Odry Effland.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Hancock Ward, Hancock. The Bishop Gerald L. Hendershot will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Cemetery, Exline Road, Hancock.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.

Robert J. Saum
Robert Johnston Saum, 84, of 1309 Marshall St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at his home.
Born July 30, 1915, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Haller and Mary Susan Johnston Saum.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a member of 1st Hagerstown Hose Company, B.P.O. of the Elks Lodge 378, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, VFW and AMVETS.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine A. Britti Saum; two daughters, Judi McCarter of San Diego and Johanna Castle of Frederick, Md.; two sons, Gerald W. Saum and John C. Saum, both of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Paola Verduci of Hagerstown and Melinda Verduci of Key West, Fla.; two stepsons, Alex Verduci of Marietta, Ga. and Samuel P. Verduci of Minneapolis; one sister, Maxine Ringer of Hagerstown; one brother, John E. Saum of Toledo, Ohio; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Fullen will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh's Cemetery, Rouzerville, Pa.
The viewing will be private.

Jay S. Smith
FUNKSTOWN - Jay Stanley Smith, 54, of 20 W. Baltimore St., died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born April 13, 1945, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Marvin Webster and Mae Catherine Stonesifer Smith.
He was last employed by American Legion Funkstown Post 211, and previously with Noland's, Interstate Electric and Tri-State Electric.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of Amvets Post 10. He was a member of American Legion Funkstown Post 211 and was active with the baseball league, serving on the Legion Baseball Committee.
He is survived by two sisters, Shirley E. Hays of Smithsburg and Sondra Garmong Meadows of Martinsburg; nieces; nephews; aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jennifer Holton Domer.
Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
