Betty J. O'Brien
SMITHSBURG - Betty Jean "B.J." O'Brien, formerly of 11200 Wolfsville Road, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 15, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Vernie Rummel Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. "Pete" O'Brien, whom she married
in 1942. He died in 1987.
She was a 1942 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was employed in the offices of Dr. R.B. Norment, Dr. James R. Dwyer and Dr. John H. Kehne, all of Hagerstown, The Urological Center and Brook Lane Health Services.
She is survived by one son, Timothy P. O'Brien and three grandchildren, Shawn O'Brien, Timothy O'Brien and Amy O'Brien.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Clifton E. Mayhew
Clifton E. Mayhew, 72, of 924 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 24, 1927, in Westernport, Md., he was the son of the late Pat R. and Lizzie Mae Bittinger Mayhew.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Swick Mayhew, in 1991.
He was retired from MCI as a correctional officer.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.
He was of Protestant faith.
He was a member of AMVETS Post 10, VFW and Eagles Club, all of Hagerstown.
He is survived by one son, Pat Mayhew of Hagerstown; two daughters, Michealene Cosey and Doreen Bowers, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Gene Mayhew of Westernport; one sister, Dorothy Harshberger of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Boal Funeral Home, Westernport. Burial will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ardell J. Cronise
BOONSBORO - Ardell J. Cronise, 87, formerly of S. Main St., died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Fahrney Keedy Home.
Born Aug. 31, 1912, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Earl B. and Flora V. Shawen Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo "Mike" Cronise, in 1984.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley E. Metz of Boonsboro; one son, Carroll Cronise of Boonsboro; one sister, Julia M. Green of Hagerstown; one brother, Richard M. Phillips of Hagerstown; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Warren Phillips, Wilbur Phillips and E. Robert Phillips.
Private burial services will be at the convenience of the family in Boonsboro Cemetery.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests omission of flowers and that memorial contributions be made to Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Service, P.O. Box 7, Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Caroline C. McAfee
FOXVILLE, Md. - Caroline C. McAfee, 72, of Foxville Road, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 6, 1927, in Foxville, she was the daughter of the late Henry Clyde and V. Ruth Pete Lewis Toms.
She had been employed at Claire Frock in Thurmont, Md.
She attended Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, Foxville.
She is survived by her husband, William R. McAfee; one daughter, Sharon L. Kline of Smithsburg; two brothers, Clyde R. Toms of Foxville and Irving A. Toms of Foxville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry R. McAfee.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, Foxville. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Bethel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
Edna E. Shafer
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Edna Elizabeth Shafer, 95, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born May 19, 1904, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late James and Fannie Scadden Lowman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl C. Shafer Sr., in 1987.
She retired from Memorial Hospital, from the dietary department.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by one son, Carl C. Shafer Jr. of Cumberland; one daughter, Juanita E. Kirby of Cumberland; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Scaropelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland. The Rev. Charles Riggleman will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Willard A. Oney III
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Willard Arthur Oney III, 48, of 13320 Bobtown Road, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born May 29, 1951, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, he was the son of the late Willard Arthur Jr., and Lois Elfrieda Mohney Oney.
He was a 1969 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School and Hagerstown Junior College.
He was employed at Eastern Correctional Institute in Salisbury, Md., as a correctional officer, with the rank of lieutenant.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose, M.X.C.A. Union and NRA.
He is survived by his wife, Carol J. Shupp Oney; one son, Willard Michael Oney, at home; one stepdaughter, Holly L. McCarty of Clear Spring; two sisters, Roberta K. Oney of Smithsburg and Janine M. Fouke of Bluffton, S.C.; three brothers, Forrest R. Oney of Kearneysville, W.Va., Phillip V. Oney and Kurt D. Oney, both of Waynesboro, Pa.; one step granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
