Basil L. Brown
SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - Basil Lee Brown, 76, of Sunnyside, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at his home.
Born in Beaver Creek, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben C. Brown.
He was a 1941 graduate of Smithsburg High School. He also was a graduate of Southwestern College in San Diego.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served until his retirement in 1971.
He worked for the Boy Scouts of America as district executive, then for Cascade National Gas until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of Good Sam Club, Family Motor Coach Association, Circle Up Camping Club, Inland Empire and Northwest S.M.A.R.T. clubs, National Camping Travelers, and Santa Rosa Lodge 16 F&AM of Milton, Fla.
He was a life member of Nile Temple of the Shrine of Seattle, a life member and past master of Sunnyside Lodge 138 of Sunnyside, Masada Temple of the Shrine of Yakima, Wash., Scottish Rite of Yakima, Yakima Valley Shrine Club, Lower Valley Shrine Club, and Master of the Masons Club.
He was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge of Anacortes, Wash., a 60-year member of Boy Scouts of America, a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1675 of Osburn, Idaho, American Legion U.S.S. Prince William Association, Patrol Squadron Two Association, Stinger Club as a survivor of the U.S.S. Wasp sunk in 1942, Escort Sailor and Airmen Association, Navy League of the U.S.S., and Sunnyside Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Rogers, whom he married
in 1946; a daughter, Beverly Clay-McNamara of San Diego; and two sons, Stephan Lee Brown of Bremerton, Wash., and Thomas Allen Brown of Lake Stevens, Wash.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis Brown and Gerald Brown.
Memorial services were held, Tuesday, Sept. 21, at noon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sunnyside.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 911 W. Fifth Ave., Spokane, WA 99204; or Providence Hospice, 110 S. Ninth Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.
Arrangements were made by Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside.
Marjorie J. Shirey
MAUGANSVILLE - Marjorie Juanita Shirey, 75, of 17937 Leona Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1924, in Berkeley Junction, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Levi Rose and Nora Jeanette Fisher Benner.
She was a 1942 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She was a graduate of Hagerstown Junior College; and Shepherd College.
She was one of the original Crossing Guards for county schools. She was a second grade teacher for Washington County schools.
She was a member of Valley Grace Brethren Church, a Sunday school superintendent, secretary and treasurer; taught at Grace Church Camp, and Bible school. She was a member of Women's Missionary Council; and Sisterhood of Mary and Martha.
She is survived by her husband, Ray E. Shirey; three daughters, Rayetta Schindel and Rebecca Collinson, both of Hagerstown, and Vickie DeArmey of Lyon, France; a son, Robin Shirey of Hagerstown; two sisters, Madalene Dixon of Hagerstown and Iva Donavan of Brunswick, Md.; a brother, Gilbert Benner of Boonsboro; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Valley Grace Brethren Church, 2275 Gay St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Daniel J. Pritchett will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery in Sharpsburg.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Charles M. Wisner Sr.
FREDERICK, Md. - Charles Martin Wisner Sr., 88, of 7944 Old Seventh St., died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Citizens Nursing Home of Frederick County, Md.
Born May 1, 1911, in Walkersville, Md., he was the son of the late Harry L. and Leita Grace Hoke Wisner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Lenhart Wisner, in May 1999.
A retired dairy farmer, he had farmed in Poolesville, Manchester and Harmony Grove, Md.
He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Sue Battle of Tampa, Fla., and Betty A. Eans of Walkersville; two sons, Charles Martin Wisner Jr. of Myersville, Md., and Dennis Wayne Wisner of Keedysville; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Lynn Wisner; and a son, Larry Richard Wisner.
Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St. in Frederick. The Rev. Hayden L. Sparks will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Brenda W. Whipp
ST. MARY'S, Ga. - Brenda Wonn Whipp, 53, of 296 Liberty Tree Road, and formerly of Williamsport, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Camden Medical Center in Kingsland, Ga.
Born Sept. 28, 1946, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Maurice and Lorene Henson Wonn.
She was employed as a veterinarian surgical technician.
She served in the U.S. Air Force.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Tampa, Fla.
She was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Whipp Jr.; a daughter, Teresa A. Brunetti of Macon, Ga.; and a granddaughter, Kristi Lynn Brunetti of Macon.
Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The Rev. Alfred E. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.
Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Carl J. Seal
Carl Junior Seal, 72, of 17700 Stone Valley Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born July 13, 1927, in Luray, Va., he was the son of Katie Kibler Seal of Virginia and the late Walter McKingley Seal.
He retired from Fairchild Industries; and Rohrer Industries.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Williamsport American Legion Post No. 202; and Redmen Tribe No. 84 of Williamsport.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Katherine M. Hose Seal; four sisters; two brothers; two stepbrothers; and four aunts.
He was preceded in death by a stepsister.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring. The Rev. Robert Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

Harold E. Lewis
Harold Elvin Lewis, 81, of 1003 Georgia Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 9, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Charles and Vada M. Arnold Lewis.
He was a self-employed mason, retiring in 1980.
He was a Christian.
He was a member of Western Enterprise Fire Co.; and a former member of BPO Elks No. 378 and Eagles No. 694.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia May Crabtree Lewis, whom he married
Sept. 17, 1925; a brother, John David Lewis of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine V. Munson.
Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
