Lenwood C. Dewease
SMITHSBURG - Lenwood C. "Woody" Dewease, 68, of Whitetail Road, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1931, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Monga M. and Gladas Pearl Wells Dewease.
He was employed by Shockey Electric Co. in Waynesboro, Pa.; Fairchild, Hub City Electric and Snurr Electric, all in Hagerstown; and Joseph M. Grossnickle Electric Co. in Middletown, Md.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown and Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen V. Miller Dewease; one daughter, Kathy M. Boschert of Hagerstown; one son, Richard E. Dewease of Smithsburg; three sisters, Catherine Cordell of Greencastle, Pa., Joann Caron of Burlington, N.C., and Janet Stone of Hagerstown; two brothers, Stuart Dewease of Waynesboro and Fred Dewease of Hagerstown; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by five brothers.
A service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. The Rev. David Rawley will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marie A. Bowers
Marie A. "Kate" Bowers, 79, of Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1919, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Rose Leona Johnson McCormick.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Bowers, in 1988.
She retired from Hallmark Realtors in Baltimore.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Webster B. Harrison Post No. 26 American Legion Auxiliary of Hancock, AARP, and Washington County Democratic Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Cathy O'Bryan of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Bowers of Hagerstown; four sisters, Regina Miller of Lexington Park, Md., Catherine Lantz of Hancock, Grace McCormick of California, Md., and Maude E. Moore of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jim McCormick, Ike McCormick, Bum McCormick, Bud McCormick and Barney Johnson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St. in Hancock, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Thurman B. Shank
BOONSBORO - Thurman B. Shank, 80, of Boonsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 2, 1919, in Myersville, Md., he was the son of the late Albert and Eva Harshman Shank.
He was a retired crane operator and had previously worked for C.W. Hetzer, Bester and Long, and Brayden Stine, all of Hagerstown. He also worked for Operating Engineers Union throughout southern Maryland and was last employed by Maryland State Police Barrick in Hagerstown.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Okinawa.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Myersville.
He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 36 in Hagerstown, Amvets Post 9 in Middletown, Md., and American Legion Post 10 in Boonsboro. He also was a member of AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita Young Shank; one son, Thurman B. Shank Jr. of Hagerstown, one sister, Lucille Englebrecht of Myersville; one brother, Richard Shank of Baltimore; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Maurice Shank, Ernest Shank and Norman Shank.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville. Pastor David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery in Myersville.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daisy M. Mertz
Daisy May Mertz, 70, of 1006 Hamilton Blvd., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 19, 1928, in Indian Springs, Md., she was the daughter of the late Michael Harry and Lula Mills Martin.
She was employed by Maryland Ribbon Co.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Temple Builders Class.
She is survived by her husband, Howard K. Mertz; a daughter, Nina Petty of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary Husnander and Doris Davis, both of Florida; two brothers, Glen Martin of Hagerstown and Wilbur Martin of Florida; and four grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Witt; and two brothers, Edward Martin and Elwin Martin.
Service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
W. Warren Stultz
W. Warren Stultz, 76, formerly of 1330 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Golden Years Retreat in Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 12, 1923, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Daniel E. and Mary Gosnell Stultz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Urner Stultz.
He was a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School.
He was a lawyer, retiring in 1992. He and his father had practiced law together.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post No. 42 American Legion.
He is survived by two daughters, Lucinda Shuff of Hagerstown and Sally A. Mathre of Normal, Ill.; a brother, Kenneth L. Stultz of Pinehurst, N.C.; nieces and nephews.
Service will be Saturday at noon at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Carmel cemetery near Frederick, Md.
Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to noon prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charles E. Johnson Jr.
Charles E. Johnson Jr., 85, of 19117 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 21, 1914, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Mamie Alice Reed Johnson Sr.
He was self-employed in the appliance repair business.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a Presbyterian.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian M. Johnson; a daughter, Mary Rose Johnson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Lillian Cage of Cumberland, Mary Donahue of New Jersey and Pat Stallings of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and four brothers, Johnnie Johnson of Hagerstown, Thomas Johnson of Detroit, Claude Johnson of Orlando, Fla., and Donald Johnson of Frederick, Md.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Lloyd; and three brothers, Albert Johnson, Lorenzo H. Johnson Sr. and Daniel Johnson.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
There will be no viewing.
