Edgar L. Winders
SMITHSBURG - Edgar Lareine Winders, 82, of 22222 Jefferson Blvd., died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 6, 1917, in Beaver Creek, Md., he was the son of the late Edgar B. and Sadie F. Bachtell Winders.
He was a 1934 graduate of Boonsboro High School and attended Columbia Business College.
He was employed for Hoffman's Clothing Store, Hagerstown for 54 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg serving on the council, was a Sunday School teacher and financial secretary.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion and B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, both of Hagerstown; Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro, Pa.; member and Past President and Treasurer of Smithsburg Lions Club; life member of Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company; Sunshine Leisure Club of Smithsburg and National A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sudie E. Hershberger Winders; two daughters, S. Loretta Ruths of Stephens City, Va. and Bonnie Schaller of Smithsburg; four grandsons; one granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nora Stine Winders; one granddaughter and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 N. Main St., Smithsburg. The Rev. Mark Walters, the Rev. Julie Brigham, the Rev. Clay Moyer and the Rev. John Ericson will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Ronald F. Phillips
Ronald F. Phillips, 61, of 20806 Emerald Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, Conn.
Born Dec. 29, 1937 in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Edgar Phillips, Sr. and Regina Payne Phillips Collins.
He was employed with Washington County Board of Education as a principal at Paramount Elementary School and later retired from Old Forge Elementary School after 35 years of service.
He was a member of National Association of Elementary School Principals; Maryland Association of School Principals; and Washington County Association of Elementary School Principals serving on the Executive Board and the Chairperson of the Citizenship Award.
He was a charter member of Washington County Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Medairy Lodge A.F.&A. M. 140.
He was past President of Washington County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board. He served on the Board of Directors for the Black Rock Golf Course.
He was a member of Dream Come True where he served on the executive board and as president.
He was a past member of the board of directors of the Hagerstown Junior College Foundation and a past president of Hagerstown Junior College Athletic Boosters Club.
He was a past member of the Governor's Commission on Children and Youth of Washington County.
He was a member of B.P.O.E., Hagerstown Lodge 378 and he was past chairman of Youth Activities Committee, Scholarship Committee and Teenager of the Year Committee.
He was a past member of board of directors of Valley Little League/Senior League Baseball and board of directors of Smithsburg, Leitersburg, Chewsville Athletic League. He was a past vice president of Washington County Coaches Association.
He was a member of Washington County Rural Heritage Museum and a past member of the Y.M.C.A. Youth Committee. He was a past secretary of High School Golf League.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he served on the scholarship committee. He was a past member of board of directors of the Washington County Teachers Association Credit Union and a past member of Executive Board of International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Anna Margaret Phillips; one daughter, Julie L. Beard of Hagerstown; one son, R. Scott Phillips of Dunwoody, Ga.; four sisters, Lorretta Abe of Baltimore, Diana Stewart of Cumberland, Md., Rebecca Weaver of Ridgeley, and Leona Smelser of Bowling Green, Md.; two brothers, Dr. William Edgar Phillips Jr. of Fairmont, W.Va., and Robert Collins of Ridgeley and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Thuss and one brother, Duane Phillips.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 21006 Twin Springs Drive, Chewsville. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Thurman L. Smith
Thurman Lee "Smitty" Smith, 65, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 15, 1934, in Mount Lena, Md., he was the son of Luella Jane Bowman Smith of Hagerstown and the late Raymond Lee Smith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerry Ann Smith, in 1998.
He was a former employee of Potomac Dye and Printing and The Stationery House, both of Hagerstown.
He was a Little League manager for National Little League for 30 years.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Luann M. Ewanick of Boonsboro and Melissa K. Crabtree of Hagerstown; a son, Robin L. Smith of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, Omer Eugene Smith of Palm Coast, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
A service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastor Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion cemetery in San Mar, Md.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Olzie D. Rose
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Olzie Dixie Rose, 88, formerly of Middletown, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Williamsport.
Born April 29, 1911, in Dickerson, Md., she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah Farmer Deel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Rose, in 1993.
She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Kentucky.
She is survived by four daughters, Dolly Powers of Williamsport, Dorothy Hager of Ransom, Ky., Loretta Cody of Middletown and Elizabeth Sluss of Columbia; three sons, John Rose of Boonsboro, Roger Rose of Knoxville and Arvil Rose of Burkittsville; three sisters, Goldie Ellis of Rock, W.Va., Mary Moore of Laurel, Md. and Nell Belcher of Clintonwood, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Church of the Brethren in Burkittsville. The Rev. Bill Stevens and the Rev. Joel Turner will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Friends may call anytime today at the funeral home.
Bernice M. Klimek
MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. - Bernice M. Klimek, 87, of 19310 Clubhouse Road, and formerly of 13523 Cherry Tree Circle, Hagerstown, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville, Md.
Born Dec. 5, 1911, in Wheeling, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Victoria Haligowski Filip.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley J. Klimek, Sr., in 1995.
She retired in 1976 from Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown, from the dietary department.
She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church while a 50-year resident in Hagerstown.
She is survived by one daughter, Carole Kyle of Indialantic, Fla.; one son, Stanley J. Klimek, Jr. of Gaithersburg, Md.; three sisters, Laura Sobolesky of Cadiz, Ohio, Stella Kiaski of Stubenville, Ohio and Jane Gary of Whitter, Calif.; one brother, Edward Filip of Stubenville; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.
