Martha Heefner
BOONSBORO - Martha Heefner, 99, a resident of Fahrney Keedy Nursing Home, and formerly of 101 Barnett Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1900, in Quincy Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James C. and Katie Ellen Brindle Heefner.
She attended Mount Vernon Elementary School, near Waynesboro.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Welty Church of the Brethren in Smithsburg. She taught Primary Sunday School Class for many years, and was a member of Women's Aide Society of the church.
She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Geyer and Mary Marker, both of Waynesboro; a brother, James B. Heefner of Smithsburg; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Orpha Heefner, Anna Meyer, Edna Myers and Kathryn Stevenson.
Service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Welty Church of the Brethren, 13465 Greensburg Road, Smithsburg. Pastor Dean Mouk and Chaplain Louis Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery in Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Charles W. Locke
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Charles William "Bill" Locke, 86, of Middletown, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Homewood Retirement Center in Frederick, Md.
Born April 7, 1913, he was the son of the late Thomas A. Lock and Mae V. Willingham.
He was formerly employed by Marker's Cash Market, South Bentz Street, Frederick, Md., and later by Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown and Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Frederick. Following retirement from Sears in 1974, he worked at Young Men's Shop in Frederick.
He served with Company B, 29th Infantry National Guard.
He was a member of Christ Reformed Church, UCC in Middletown, and the Andrew and Philip Brotherhood Sunday School Class. He also served as elder and deacon.
He was a member of Sons of AMVETS Post 9 in Middletown, VFW Post 3285 in Frederick, Middletown Planning and Zoning Commission and Middletown Lions Club. He also served as a director of Dr. J. Elmer Harp Medical Center.
He was a member of the Senior Golf League.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Virginia Wise Lock; two daughters, Mary Helen Cramer of Middletown and Gail Dee Owings of Baltimore; two sons, Charles W. Locke II of Berkeley, W.Va., and Michael A. Locke of Frederick, Md.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Alice, Mary, Nancy and Ruth; and two brothers, John and Thomas.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ Reformed Church in Middletown. The Rev. Mark A. Wakefield will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert S. Pike
WILLIAMSPORT - Robert Shelton Pike, 73, of Homewood Retirement Center, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Homewood Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 23, 1925, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Ira Martin and Helen V. Jackson Pike.
He was a self-employed contractor, and was employed by Master Supply and Pangborn Corp.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 139th Infantry Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne.
He was a member of St. James Brethren Church.
He played semi-pro football with the Hagerstown Marketeers and the Hagerstown Merchants. He was a member of the Baseball Independent Leagues, Security, St. James and Pangborn. He coached Junior League Baseball.
He is survived by two daughters, Sue A. Jordan of Smithsburg and Doris J. Florek of Waynesboro, Pa.; one sister, Shirley C. Lumm of Hagerstown; one brother, George W. Pike of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Edmund Pike Sr. and Bradford Pike.
Services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor Ronald Key will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery with military honors conducted at the cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
John W. Burger
CLEAR SPRING - John Wayne "Jack" Burger, 71, of Clear Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at his home.
Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Fred A. and Mabel R. Barber Burger.
He was formerly employed by A&P Grocery Store and Nick's Airport Inn, and later restored and refinished antique furniture.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by one brother, Fred A. Burger of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Smith; and two brothers, Victor Burger and David Cottingham.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown. The Rev. Sharon L. Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Church cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., Hagerstown, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lillian J. Cook
Lillian Josephine Cook, 88, of 16960 National Pike, Hagerstown, and of Williamsport Nursing Home, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the home.
Born Feb. 9, 1911, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lulu Edna Clopper Funkhouser.
She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and Columbia Business College.
She retired from Fairchild Industries of Hagerstown after 25 years.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Clear Spring.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John P. Cook; two daughters, Sharon L. McKee of Hagerstown and Ronda R. Cook of Allentown, Pa.; a son, John Gregory Cook of Clear Spring; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Hester M. Peterman.
Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring. The Rev. Mary Amundson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery in Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
