Nina E. Lewis
BIG POOL - Nina Evelyn Lewis, 73, of 10424 Catholic Church Road, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at her home.
Born April 22, 1926, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Carl L. and Lessie May George Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Leon Lewis, in 1991.
She was employed as a school bus driver for the Washington County Board of Education until her retirement.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Janey L. LaPole at home, June M. Perry of Hagerstown and Alanea S. Altonen of Hellertown, Pa.; four sons, David Lewis and Michael Lewis, both of Hagerstown, William Lewis of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Scott Lewis of Clear Spring; a sister, Leah Dawn Grapes of LaVale, Md.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene C. Cunningham.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The Rev. Nancy Green will officiate. Burial will be in Shanktown cemetery in Big Pool.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.
John G. Dicks Jr.
John G. Dicks, Jr., 73, of 1147 Cottage Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
Born June 8, 1926, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late John G. Sr., and Mabel Clarice Alberson Dicks.
He graduated from High School in College Park, Ga., and attended Georgia Tech. He also graduated from Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago.
He was a veteran the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II. He also worked for the Department of Army in the field of communications for more than 35 years. In his last position with the U.S. Government, he was responsible for strategic communications in the continental U.S. His work with telephone switching systems and satellite telephony became the forerunner for much of today's technology.
He owned several businesses over the years and was involved in technology, telephony and video and was an instructor for Virginia State University and Hagerstown Junior College.
He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
He was active in Boy Scouts of America; Alliance for the Mentally Ill; American Legion, Amateur Radio Club; and a number of computer-related organizations. He also participated in the Y.M.C.A. as a volunteer and received the Certified Managements certificate.
He is survived by his wife, Betty F. Dicks; one daughter, Joan L. Wright of Hagerstown; two sons, John G. Dicks III of Richmond, Va., and Robert P. Dicks of Atlanta; one sister, Susan Dicks of Augusta, Ga. and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson and the Rev. William Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

W. Riley Daniels III
CAMPBELL, Calif. - W. Riley Daniels III, 68, of 2415 Eva Court, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bester Daniels.
Services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
John D. Hock
KNOXVILLE, Md. - John Davis Hock, 83, of 703 John Brown Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 14, 1916, in Baltimore County, Md., he was the son of the late John Joseph and Louise Davis Hock.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Nichols Hock.
He retired from Kronheim Company, Baltimore, as a salesman.
He was a member of Jefferson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Frederick.
He was a veteran, serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He is survived by one son, Gerald Hock; one stepdaughter, Vanessa Moss of Knoxville; four stepsons, Carlos Myers Jr. of Leesburg, Va., Timothy A. Moss of Frederick, David A. Moss of Snow Hill, N.C., and Benjamin A. Moss of Hagerstown; one sister, Esther Barth of Baltimore and 12 step-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Jefferson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 199 N. Place, Frederick. The Bishop Leon Hewerdine will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Arthur W. Abbott Sr.
WILLIAMSPORT - Arthur Woodrow Abbott Sr., 84, of 15806 Clear Spring Road, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at his home.
Born in Mount Briar, Md., he was the son of the late George W. and Carrie Norris Abbott.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Prudence Bussard Abbott, in 1993.
He retired from the Washington County Roads Department.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of AARP.
He is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Weeks of King George, Va., and Marcella A. Nicewarner of Hedgesville, W.Va.; five sons, Roger L. Abbott and Donald E. Abbott, both of Greencastle, Pa., Arthur W. Abbott Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., Francis W. Abbott and Ricky G. Abbott, both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Maxine Mikus of Keedysville and Glendora Rohrer of Sharpsburg; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.
Service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
Visitation will be this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will be open today after 9 a.m.
Michael J. Sarno Jr.
Michael J. Sarno Jr., 80, of 11808 Patrick Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 24. 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 1, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Enrico and Rose Sarno.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine M. Hovis Sarno, in 1988.
From 1935 to 1951 he was a jockey. In 1984 he retired from Charles Town Races, where he had worked as a valet. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Rocky's Pizza in Smithsburg, helping to prepare the food.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion.
He is survived by three sons, Michael J. Sarno Jr. of Greencastle, Pa., Dennis J. Sarno of Hagerstown and William J. Sarno of Alfaretta, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
