Nora V. Snyder
CLEAR SPRING - Nora Virginia Snyder, 94, of 12527 National Pike, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport.
Born Nov. 24, 1904, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Lillie B. Nesbitt McDonald.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. Snyder, in 1989.
She graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1923, and from Maryland State Normal School in 1926. She received her B.S. at University of Maryland in 1951. She took courses in special education and school administration at Johns Hopkins University.
She was teaching principal at Indian Springs School. She was an educator in Washington County schools for 44 years. She retired in 1969 from Clear Spring Elementary School after 21 years as supervising principal.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Clear Spring; a Sunday school teacher; choir member; chairwoman of church and Sunday school programs and the Memorial Committee; church historian; had been chairperson of the Financial Committee and member of the Building Committee for the new Sunday school building. In 1966 she was chairwoman for the 100th Church Anniversary Celebration. In 1984, the congregation honored her for service to church and community.
She had been editor of the Globe-Trotter (Armed Forces newspaper) of Clear Spring; a former member and soloist with Cumberland Choisters, Hagerstown; past president of Washington County Chapter of International Council for Exceptional children; Johns Hopkins Club of Washington County; Washington County Teachers Association; Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and second vice president of Delta Kappa Gamma national educational sorority; past president of Clear Spring High School Alumni Association; a member of alumni associations of Towson State University, and University of Maryland; Washington County and Maryland Retired Teacher's Associations; National Education Association, and National Congress of Parents and Teachers.
In 1956 she helped write the script and directed a musical pageant for Fort Frederick' bicentennial.
She was a director of the Clear Spring Lions Club minstrel show and assisted her husband in running the Clear Spring Volunteer Firemen's Carnival bingo stand.
In 1984 she and her husband received a certificate for outstanding contributions to local, state and national teachers associations presented by the Washington County Teachers Association.
She was a member of Clear Spring District Historical Association, Clear Spring Ambulance Club and Clear Spring Volunteer Firemen's Association.
She is survived by five nieces, Jean Frances Rowe and Lillie Virginia Davenport, both of Clear Spring; Mary Margaret Fiery and Anna Belle Fiery, both of Emmitsburg, Md., and Betty Jane Lee of Mercersburg, Pa.; four great-nieces and eight great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mabel McDonald Weller, Lillie McDonald Fiery and Florence McDonald Frantz; a brother, Roy Nesbitt McDonald and a niece.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. The Revs. R. Terrence Foor and Willard F. Rahn will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery in Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Hazel R. Taylor
Hazel Rebecca Taylor, 82, of Elgin Boulevard, Hagerstown, and of Avalon Nursing Home, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born Oct. 17, 1916, in Cito, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Phoebe Frances Paylor Carbaugh.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Winfield Albert Mills, in 1966; by her second husband, Robert Bruce Farrell in 1970, and by her third husband, Ned Taylor in 1994.
She was a homemaker. She was retired from E.J. Fennel Co. of Hagerstown after 17 years.
She attended Broadfording Bible Brethren Church.
She was a member of International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
She is survived by three daughters, Esther Irene Shaw of Hagerstown, Cora Rebecca Reed of Clear Spring and Mary Catherine Murphy of Greencastle, Pa.; four sons, William A. Mills of Hagerstown, Ray Clinton Mills of Inwood, W.Va., Lewis M. Mills and Frank Alvin Mills, both of Hancock; one sister, Phoebe Frances Helman of Hagerstown; one brother, W. Ralph Carbaugh of McConnellsburg, Pa.; 28 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Mills and Elsie Mae Mills; one son, Richard Alexander Mills; four sisters, Mary Maudaline Carbaugh, Nora Ellen Carbaugh, Helen Marie Mills and Thesta A. McQuade; and two brothers, Donald R. Carbaugh and Henry Lloyd Carbaugh.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. William Freed will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Spring Mennonite Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joyce E. Kelbaugh
Joyce Elaine Kelbaugh, 61, of 25 High St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 18, 1938, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Merle Wiles of Hagerstown and Margaret E. Moyer Ridenour of Hagerstown.
She was a Protestant.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by three daughters, Lisa I. Lindman of Panama City Beach, Fla., Jamie N. Michael and Cherie J. Michael, both of Hagerstown; three sons, Shannon Michael III, Donald M. Kelbaugh Jr. and Jody B. Kelbaugh, all of Hagerstown; three sisters, Joanne F. Ryan, Jean E. Gysberts and Janet M. Carter, all of Hagerstown; and 14 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Renee Michael and a son, Todd M. Michael.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dan Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Kenneth E. Barton
TAMPA, Fla. - Kenneth E. Barton, 66, of Tampa, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Washington County.
He was a retired painter.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Barton; one daughter, Sheila Bean of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; two sons, Edward Lee Barton of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Matthew Wayne Beard of Tampa; three brothers, George R. Barton of Tampa, Leonard W. Barton and Edward Barton of Hagerstown; one sister, Darlene Barr of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by National Cremation Society in Tampa.
Cortland V. Sperry
Cortland Victor "Vic" Sperry, 64, of 901 Pope Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at his home.
Born Nov. 20, 1934, in Clarksburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ernest Cortland and Juanita McClung Sperry.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rona Sperry, in 1998.
He was employed by AMVETS Post 10.
He served in the U.S. Army and the Maryland National Guard.
He was a member and vice commander of AMVETS Post 10.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Comianos of Marion, Ohio, and Valerie Barbeito of Myersville, Md.; two sons, Steven Sperry of Abingdon, Va., and Mark Sperry of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother, Dave Sperry of Baltimore; one half brother, Jack Pitts of Bridgeport, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and stepmother, Gladys Sperry of Bridgeport.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 226 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery with military honors by AMVETS Post 10.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Beverly M. Exline
HANCOCK - Beverly M. Exline, 62, of Pennsylvania Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her home.
Born April 29, 1937, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of H. Jane Blenard Powers of Hancock and the late Harry L. Powers, Jr.
She was a homemaker and she was a former employee of Washington County Board of Education, working as a secretary at Hancock Elementary School and later as an office manager for Johnson Controls in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Hancock United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Pamela Ziler of Maugansville; one son, King Exline of Hancock; two sisters, Bonnie Brannon of Hagerstown and Krista Conway of Berlin, Md.; one brother, Harry L. Powers, III, of Hancock; two grandchildren and one step grandson.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hancock United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert G. Brennan, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.
