Cletus E. Poffenberger
WILLIAMSPORT - Cletus Elwood "Boots" Poffenberger, 84, of 13 N. Conococheague St., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born in Williamsport on July 1, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles and Sophia A. Zimmerman Poffenberger.
He was employed at Fairchild Aircraft. He retired from Mack Trucks in 1978.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Special Services Baseball Team in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Williamsport.
He was a former Williamsport Town Councilman.
He was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion, Conococheague Tribe 84 Improved Order of Redmen, both in Williamsport; BPO Elks Lodge 378 and V.F.W. William D. Byron Post 1936, both in Hagerstown; H.D.H. Hunting and Fishing Club and Williamsport Hunt Club. He was a member of the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He played professional baseball as a pitcher from 1935 to 1942. He played for Fieldle, Va., Bi-State League; West Virginia Mid-Atlantic team; Beaumont, Texas team; San Diego of the Pacific Coast League; Detroit Tigers; Brooklyn Dodgers; and local teams.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Hanna Bowser Poffenberger; two sons, Gerald L. Knode and George F. Knode, both of Williamsport; a sister, Maxine Long of Williamsport; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Revs. W. Gregory Martin and Karen Stiles will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery in Williamsport, with military services by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Elaine K. Freckleton
DECATUR, Ga. - Dr. Elaine Lucile Kidwell Freckleton, 73, of Decatur, died of heart failure Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at her home.
Born Nov. 19, 1925, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Lucille Beckley Kidwell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. F. Robert Freckleton, in 1978.
She was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School; and a 1949 graduate of McGill University Medical School in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
She practiced medicine in Hagerstown in the 1950s, specializing in pediatric medicine. She also practiced medicine in DeKalb County, Ga. She became a child psychiatrist and served her residency at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Later, she became associated with the DeKalb Health Department; worked at Georgia Retardation Center; and Gracewood State School and Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
She is survived by her son, Michael W. Donnellan of Atlanta; a brother, Guy Kidwell of Cleveland, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Donnellan.
A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 23, at Central Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Atlanta.
Her body was donated to Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Edna L. Boswell
Edna Lucille Staub Boswell, 82, of 9946 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown, and formerly of 401 Walnut St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Clearview Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 31, 1917, in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Willard Amandus and Nannie Virginia Tartisell Staub.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. Boswell Sr., in 1981. They were married
July 4, 1937.
She attended Eastern High School and graduated from Boyd's Business School, both of Washington, D.C.
She was employed as a telephone operator by the District of Columbia; and by the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., during World War II.
She was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ in Ringgold, and Good Neighbors Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Harmony Chapter No. 110 Order of the Eastern Star in Thurmont, Md., served as secretary and held offices; and AARP.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith C. Reed of Fremont, N.C., and Bonnie V. Hose of Fairplay; a son, Kenneth M. Boswell Jr. of Waynesboro; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Elizabeth Staub; a brother, James A. Staub; and a grandson.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ, 14420 Barkdoll Road in Ringgold. The Revs. Donald Conley and Richard Daughtridge will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St. in Waynesboro.

Mehrle D. Shafer
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Mehrle Donald Shafer, 69, of 7716 Picnic Woods Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 15, 1930, in Middletown, he was the son of the late Calvin P. Sr. and Lora Beachley Shafer.
He retired in 1985 from Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., after 33 years.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ in Middletown.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley Mae Lidie Shafer; three sons, Darryl Shafer and Kevin Shafer, both of Middletown, and Brian Shafer of Boonsboro; three sisters, Doris Bidle and Patsy Main, both of Middletown, and Sharon Davis of Clear Spring; a brother, Calvin P. Shafer Jr. of Middletown; and two grandsons.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. W. Jorris Beckmann will officiate. Burial will be in Reformed cemetery in Middletown.

Elva S. Dunn
Elva S. Dunn, 77, of 720 Sunset Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Rhonda J. Tilley.
Born May 10, 1922, in South Mountain, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Minnie Lookabaugh Staley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. Dunn, in 1984.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She was a member of TOPS of Hagerstown.
She is survived by a daughter, Rhonda J. Tilley of Harrisburg, N.C.; a son, Russell J. Dunn of Sykesville, Md.; a sister, Minnie Ebersole of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Arnold Staley of South Mountain, Pa.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Roger L. Cassell
Roger L. Cassell, 50, of Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
Born March 7, 1949, in Cass, W.Va., he was the son of Violet Phillips Cassell of Durbin, W.Va., and the late Franklin Randall Cassell.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Marsha Jacobs of Hagerstown; four sisters, Janet Walther and Regina Waybright, both of Hinton, W.Va., Roberta Turner of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Rebecca Curry of Durbin; two brothers, Franklin Cassell of Durbin and David Cassell of Marlinton, W.Va.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. C. D. Coley officiated. Burial was private.
