Ray E. Valentine
WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Ray Edgar Valentine, 79, of 11 Kenneth Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Frederick (Md.) Health Care Center.
Born April 11, 1920, in Rocky Ridge, Md., he was the son of the late Harry and Marie Fitz Valentine.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Celeste Fisher Valentine, in 1987.
He was a 1937 graduate of Emmitsburg (Md.) High School, played in the All-County Band and All-State Orchestra.
He took courses at Frederick Community College.
In 1938, he received the American Farmer Degree in Kansas City, Mo. He received a state farm degree in 1935 at College Park, Md.
He worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a conservation aide in Frederick and Carroll counties. He worked as construction superintendent for E.H. Cline Inc. and R.F. Kline Inc. He worked as chief inspector for Frederick County Metropolitan Commission and the Department of Engineering. He retired in 1986.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
He was a 4-H Club member; vice president of the State F.F.A. Association, and organized the first Baby Beef Club in Frederick County in 1937; and with his family exhibited Ayshire cattle; and received a D.A.R. medal;
He had been a Scoutmaster in Thurmont; was secretary at Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club; and zone governor in District 10-Potomac.
He volunteered at Frederick Memorial Hospital and Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick.
He was a member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, played saxophone and sang in the church choir; was president of the church council, superintendent of Sunday school. He was secretary-treasurer of joint council of churches in two counties and was president of Luther League.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Main Schwartz-Valentine; one daughter, Darlyn Piper of New Oxford, Pa.; three sons, Randolph Valentine of Thurmont, Douglas Valentine of Hagerstown and Jeffery Valentine of Baltimore; three stepchildren, Donald Schwartz of Boonsboro, Lynne Parrish of Union Bridge, Md., and Debra Smith of Ridgecrest, Calif.; one sister, Pearl Person of Clearmont, Fla.; nine grandchildren, five step grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Valentine.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Rocky Ridge. The Rev. James Russell will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, Thurmont. The funeral home will be open from 3 p.m.

Verna L. Zimmerman
Verna L. Zimmerman, of Matthew Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at her home.
Born in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Alice L. Hinkle Taylor of Chambersburg, and the late Vernon E. Vaughn.
She retired in 1996 from Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust, Paramount, as branch manager, after 28 years.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Hagerstown.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred Harris will officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742; or to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Brian K. Lowman
Brian Keith Lowman, 35, formerly of 16140 Rush Run Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, in Lavergne, Tenn., as a result of an accident.
Born June 3, 1964, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Charles R. and Dorothy L. Wilt Lowman of Hagerstown.
He was a self-employed carpenter.
He is survived by one daughter, Amanda Lowman of Clear Spring; one son, Joshua Lowman of Clear Spring; two sisters, Kendra L. McElroy and Rhonda K. Barrett, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Charles R. Lowman Jr. and Allen R. Lowman, both of Hagerstown; grandmother, Beulah McGinnis of Hagerstown; step grandfather, Allen McGinnis of Hagerstown; nieces, nephews; and a special friend, Janet Wilson of Hagerstown.
Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Frances L. Ahalt
Frances Louise Ahalt, 67, of 520 N. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Florida.
Born Oct. 7, 1931, in Libertytown, Md., she was the daughter of the late George T. and Mary C. Duvall Shaffer.
She is survived by her husband, Harry Stup Ahalt Sr.; five daughters, Shirley Oliver of Smithsburg, Mary Smith of Glen Bernie, Md., Sheila Kolb and Ann Shrader, both of Damascus, Md., and Melinda Wickes of Maine; six sons, Harry S. Ahalt Jr., of Vera, Fla., Charles Ahalt of Libertytown, Tommy Ahalt of Hampstead, Md., Bobby Ahalt of Marion Station, Md., Joe Ahalt and Thomas Ahalt Jr., both of Hagerstown; one sister, Polly Rush of Silver Spring, Md.; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Rohrback.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Chris R. Swope will officiate. Burial will be on Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Russell W. Rhodes
WILLIAMSPORT - Russell Woodrow Rhodes, 70, of 17108 Virginia Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born July 8, 1929, in Funkstown, he was the son of the late Cecil Brewer and Katherine Louise Shipley Rhodes.
He retired in 1991 from Allen Shank Construction Co. as a carpenter. Prior to that he was employed by Baltimore Contractors and C. Glenn Fox Construction Co., Williamsport.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Conococheague Tribe 84 IORed Men and Potomac Post 202 American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret G. Rowe Rhodes; two sons, Richard L. Rhodes of Valrico, Fla., and Curtis W. Rhodes of Williamsport; two sisters, Marie Harbaugh of Hagerstown and Betty Grove of Williamsport; one brother, Cecil G. Rhodes; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one step-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open on Tuesday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
Frances V. DeNeen
SPRING HILL, Fla. - Frances Virginia Exline DeNeen, 83, of Spring Hill, and formerly a resident of Huntsville, Ala., and Hancock, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Fla.
Born Sept. 17, 1915, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Hayes and Emma Hixon Exline.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl D. DeNeen, who died in 1998.
She is survived by five nieces, three nephews and many relatives.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Etta McKinley, Rosalie Andrews, Louise McCusker, Ethel Weller and Hazel Dyer; and four brothers, Walter Exline, Solomon Exline, Huber Exline and Glenn Exline.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, with services following immediately following at 8 p.m. The Rev. Edward James will officiate. Entombment will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
