Viola E. Thompson
Viola Elizabeth Thompson, 76, of 18603 Donald St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born Jan. 5, 1923, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Elmer Richard and Margarette Elizabeth Squibb Blessing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Alvin Thompson Sr., in 1991.
She was employed by Western Maryland Hospital Center for 15 years, retiring in 1987. Before that she had worked at Washington County Hospital for 14 years.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Richard L. Gossard of Georgestown, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Brandon R. Gossard, Justin J. Gossard and Shannon L. Gossard, all of Georgestown.
Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Cole F. Hanlon Jr.
Cole F. Hanlon Jr., 59, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 31, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of the late Cole Hanlon Sr. and Lillian Flores Hanlon.
He was employed by Chevy Chase Bank of Laurel, Md., as an ATM coordinator.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps/Army for 21 years, with two tours in Vietnam.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
He received military medals including the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Leier Hanlon; a daughter, Cathy Sellar of Hagerstown; a son, Mike Hanlon of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Burial will be in Rocky Gap cemetery near Cumberland, Md., with full military honors.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sidney H. Charles
Sidney Hopkins Charles, 91, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 15, 1908, in Charlton, Md., he was the son of the late John and Susan Carr Charles.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winola M. Charles, in 1993.
He was a 1928 graduate of Hagerstown High School and a 1932 graduate of Blue Ridge College in New Windsor, Md.
He was employed by Fairchild Industries for 30 years.
He and his wife owned and operated Park View Cabin Snack Bar in Shafer Park, Boonsboro.
He was a member of Park Road Bible Church and was active in funding Christian organizations.
A musician, he was a banjo player and band leader. He wrote, published and recorded music for Hilltop Records of California.
He participated in Johns Hopkins Cardio Vascular Health study for 11 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Carole M. Leiboldt of State Line, Pa.; and a grandson, Timothy W. Leiboldt of State Line.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Ankeney, Inez Haller, Frances Marston and Madge Holt; and four brothers, Eugene Charles, Clark Charles, Jay Charles and a twin brother, Seth Charles.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Revs. Ron Key and John Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth L. Diehl
KNOXVILLE - Elizabeth "Lib" Lillie Diehl, 75, of 824 Weverton Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, Md.
Born March 25, 1924, in Gapland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Melvin William and Catherine Olden Phillips.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Hayward Lee Baer in 1967 and Charles Stuard Diehl in 1986.
She formerly owned and operated Lib's Grocery in Sandy Hook.
She was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren.
She was a member of Women of the Moose Chapter 660 in Brunswick, Md.
She is survived by three sisters, Pauline C. Lawson of Ijamsville, Md., Virginia McKenzie of Frederick, Md., and Frances Runkles of Knoxville; two brothers, Millard Phillips of Brunswick and Richard Phillips of Knoxville; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Phillips.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St., Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Wendell McClellan will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery, Brownsville.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from noon.
Yvonne Brown
Yvonne Brown, 63, of 433 Central Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Aug. 24, 1935, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Howard McCollum and Zelda Loshbaugh Griffith.
She was formerly employed by Roper Eastern.
She was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, David Albert Brown; six sons, Robert Miller Jr., Charles Miller, William Miller and David Miller, all of Hagerstown, Roy Miller of Ocean City, Md., and Terry Miller of Seattle; six sisters, Delores Shillenberg, Betty Sprecher, Jeannette Delauney and Jeanie Christopher, all of Hagerstown, Catherine Branigan of Baltimore and Carolyn Glowinski of St. Lucie, Fla.; a brother, Ted McCollum of Schererville, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Weber.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. James E. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Patricia A. Cubbage
HANCOCK - Patricia Ann Cubbage, 65, of Fulton Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born Nov. 16, 1933, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Bertha Patton Clay.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hancock.
She is survived by her husband, John W. Cubbage, whom she married
July 31, 1954; three daughters, Krista Mullinix, Mary Clow and Delores Fox, all of Hancock; three sons, David Cubbage, Robert Cubbage and Randy Cubbage, all of Hancock; one brother, Robert J. Clay of Berkeley Springs; one half brother, Ronald L. Clay of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by a half-brother, William Hann.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, East High Street, Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Cemetery, Exline Road, Hancock.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. The funeral home will be open from 2 p.m.
