Mary A. Thumma
Mary A. Thumma, 85, of 17600 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center.
Born May 29, 1914, in Fiddlersburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Clarence Albert and Emma Elizabeth Hartman Williams.
She retired in 1975 from Hagerstown Shoe Company after 35 years of service.
She attended Shiloh United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Peggy I. Reid of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Traci L. Hassler of Hagerstown; one grandson, Ronald L. Reid of Big Pool; two grandsons, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Mae Grove and Helen Johnson and four brothers, Richard Williams, Albert Williams, Fred Williams and Bud Williams.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
Delmar V. Brown
Delmar Verdeen Brown, 81, of 948 View St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1917, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy B. and Clara Hawk Brown.
He was a 1936 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was employed with Fairchild Aircraft, retiring in 1984 after 46 years of service.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Moose Lodge 212, Boy Scout Troop 2 and a life member of North American Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Bowers Brown and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy W. Brown, Paul Brown and Kenneth Brown.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Kenneth E. Shives Jr.
HANCOCK - Kenneth E. "Peanut" Shives Jr., 26, of North Pennsylvania Avenue, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
Born April 7, 1973, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of Kenneth E. Shives Sr. of Hancock and Dixie L. Patton Shives Miller of Hancock. He was the stepson of Cathy R. Mellott of Hancock and Gary L. Miller of Hancock.
He was a 1991 graduate of Hancock High School.
He was employed by Fleetwood Travel Trailers, Hancock, The Tri-Angle, Hancock and Mellott Enterprises, Warfordsburg, Pa.
He was a member of Sons of the American Legion Post 26, Hancock.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Crystal Hess Shives of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one daughter, Jamie Lee Shives of Hedgesville; one son, Eric Scott Shives of Hedgesville; two sisters, Brandy Shives and Jennifer R. Shives, both of Hancock; one step-sister, Krastine N. Mellott of Hancock; one step-brother, Joshua A. Mellott of Hancock; maternal grandparents, Marvin L. and Judy E. Patton of Martinsburg; step-grandparents, Gary L. and Grace Miller of Martinsburg; and a number of aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Robert and Lucy Caple and Leroy and Mary Shives.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Needmore, Pa. The Rev. Delmas Bard and the Rev. Denver Plessinger will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock and at the church Tuesday one hour prior to the service. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open today from 3 to 9 p.m.

Mamie P. Dunkin
BALTIMORE - Mamie Pauline Dunkin, 90, a resident of Frederick Villa Nursing Center, Baltimore, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Jan. 24, 1909, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Albert James and Olive Victoria Crist Wolford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Dunkin.
She taught adult education at South Hagerstown High School for 18 years and was previously employed with Fairchild Aircraft.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. She was the church secretary for 27 years retiring in 1985, a supervisor in the church school, past president Lutheran Church Women and a member of Altar Guild.
She was a member of Little Heiskel Lioness Club.
She is survived by one sister, Gladys Campanaro of Baltimore; one nephew and two nieces.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Nevin L. Brunner
CHEWSVILLE - Nevin L. Brunner, 70, of Little Antietam Road, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 27, 1929, in Cavetown, he was the son of the late Wilbur L. Sr. and Letha I. Wolfe Brunner.
He retired in 1996 from Mack Trucks after 32 years of service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Smithsburg.
He was a member of U.A.W. Local 171 Mack Truck and A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Pryor Brunner; two sons, Larry D. Brunner of Hagerstown and Barry L. Brunner at home; four sisters, Mary Catherine Grimm of Smithsburg, Cleo R. Weaver and Dianna J. Grimm, both of Hagerstown, and Shirley A. Shank of Brooksville, Fla.; three brothers, Daniel A. Brunner of Smithsburg, Gerald E. Brunner and Wilbur L. Brunner Jr., both of Hagerstown, and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Janice D. Brunner.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Pat Malone will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

Benjamin F. Tinney, Jr.
HARMONY, Md. - Benjamin Franklin "Buck" Tinney, Jr., 63, of Fishers Hollow Road, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at his home.
Born March 15, 1936, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Tinney, Sr. and Evelyn Laura Virginia May Tinney Burdette.
He was formerly employed with Robert Sheckles Masonry Contractors, Frederick.
He was a member of Harmony Church of the Brethren.
He was a member of Middletown AMVETS.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Kuhn Tinney; one daughter, Karen Kidwell of Highland, Md.; one son, Frank E. Tinney of Harmony; three sisters, Ann Stockman of Middletown, Md., Becky Barthel of Funkstown and Linda Main of Bartonsville, Md; one brother, Charles Burdette of New Windsor, Md.; two granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Burdette, and his step-father, Rodney Burdette.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Harmony Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church Road, Harmony. The Rev. Tracy Wiser will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
