Austin M. Miller
Austin Mann Miller, 88, of Putter Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born June 7, 1911, in Knoxville, he was the son of the late Daniel and California Willard Ahalt Miller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lillie Mae Miller, in 1997.
He retired as an electrician from Western Maryland Railroad; and owned and operated Modern Electric Co. from his home in Hagerstown for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his son, Austin Mann Miller Jr. of Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren, Janet Henry of Frederick and Greg Miller of Towson, Md.; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Miller and Daniel Miller.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. W. Phillip Fogarty will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Frances R. Wempe
Frances R. Wolf Wempe, 78, of Frederick Street, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at her home.
Born Nov. 15, 1920, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late David Earl Sr. and Lillian I. English Wolf.
She was a 1938 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She had been employed with Sharrett Inc.; Victor Products; Fairchild Aircraft; and Wolf and Son.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She was a member of Lady Elks No. 378; and American Legion, Williamsport Post No. 202 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Martin Edward Wempe; a brother, D. Earl Wolf Jr. of Hagerstown; two nephews and three great-nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Carroll Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clarence M. Knox
Clarence M. "Jack" Knox, 92, of 27 E. Magnolia Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, June 21, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.
Born May 22, 1907, in Gamber, Md., he was the son of the late George B. and Fannie Matthews Knox.
He retired in 1970 after 35 years as a teacher in the Washington County school system. He worked part time for Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners as a sales representative.
He volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school.
He was a member of National Education Association, Maryland Education Association and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline C. Knox; a daughter, Judith K. Kazmirowicz of Perth, Australia; a son, James E. Knox of Montgomery Village, Md.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Crist and Gladys Houck; and two brothers, Edward Knox and Karl Knox.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Randolph and North Potomac streets. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be at noon in St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church Cemetery-Kriders, near Westminster, Md.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Phyllis I. Cooley
Phyllis Irene Cooley, 84, of 268 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 10, 1914, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Lee and Gussie Mae Mose Entler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William A. Cooley, in 1987.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School; and Washington School for Secretaries.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
She was a member of Cumberland Chapter No. 56 OES; Ladies Shrine Club, Cumberland, Md.; and Beta Sigma Chi Sorority.
She is survived by a sister, Barbara Ann Hancock of Clear Spring; two brothers, Carl B. Hook Jr. of Williamsport and George B. Hook of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a half brother, Clifton L. Entler Jr. of Texas; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Lucille M. Smith
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Lucille Marie Smith, 78, of 3231 Bidle Road, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at her home.
Born June 11, 1921, in Low Moor, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Mamie Frances Callaghan Via.
She was a member of Frederick Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her husband, Donald F. Smith; a daughter, Susan Jill LaLone of Frederick, Md.; two sons, Donald D. Smith of Middletown and John Charles Smith of Barnesville, Md.; three sisters, Dorothy Phillips of Keedysville, Josephine Schultz of St. Joe, Mo., and Betty Lou Romel of Oklahoma; and 14 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be private at Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown.
