William Hurwitz
NEW YORK, N.Y. - William Hurwitz, 75, of New York City, and formerly of Frederick, Md., died Monday, June 21, 1999, at his daughter's home in Wolfsville, Md.
Born Sept. 9, 1923, he was the son of Benjamin and Rae Hurwitz.
He was valedictorian of his Westminster High School graduating class, and received the "Rotary Award for Excellence." He graduated from University of Miami in 1946.
He founded Colonial Jewelers in Frederick in 1948.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and saw action in the South Pacific.
He was past president of Downtown Merchants' Association and a member of the Exchange Club and Frederick Memorial Hospital Order of the Good Samaritan, among other philanthropic endeavors. A scholarship was established in his name at Frederick Community College.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Rudo Hurwitz, whom he married
in 1950; three children, Ellen Hurwitz, Jeffrey Hurwitz and Daniel Hurwitz; three brothers, Albert Hurwitz of Baltimore, Melvin Hurwitz of Boca Raton, Fla., and Gerald Hurwitz of Gaithersburg; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Burial will be private.

George J. Herbert
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. - George Joseph Herbert, son of Gary and Rosa Herbert of Simpsonville, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999 in Haverhill, Mass.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Luisa Herbert of Simpsonville; grandmother, Mary Jean Younker of Hagerstown; and an aunt.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 16, in Simpsonville.
Thelma F. Wagaman
Thelma Fouke Wagaman, 80, of 18814 Preston Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport.
Born June 23, 1918, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Florence Saylor Miller.
Her first husband, Paul Edward Fouke, died in 1983.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was employed by Eyerly's/Bon Ton, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
She was a member of Women's Club, Crossroads Garden Club, and American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, S. Mitchell Wagaman; one daughter, Pamela Miller of Olney, Md.; one stepdaughter, Penny Reecher of Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Kakie Dysert of Hagerstown, and Polly Mason of Marietta, Ga.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one stepbrother, Orlando Miller.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Revs. Robert C. Lehman and Willard F. Rahn will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

John D. Reese
BOONSBORO - John Denton Reese, 79, of 27781 Forester Drive, Bonita Springs, Fla., and Boonsboro, died Monday, June 21, 1999, in Williamsport.
Born May 29, 1920, in Smoketown, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Ethel Marie Shoop Reese.
He was the owner/operator of Boonsboro Produce Market for more than 50 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. He received three Bronze Stars, among other decorations.
He was a Protestant.
He was a member of Boonsboro American Legion Clopper-Michael Post 10 and AARP; and a sponsor and Hall of Fame member of South Mountain Little League. He was a former student and preceptor with the Institute of Science and Mental Physics; and a member of the Republican National Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Suzanne Butler Reese, whom he married
April 22, 1986; four daughters, Carolyn Joyce Hutzell of Black Rock, Md., Connie Lee Rohrer of Boonsboro, Vicki Lynn Miller of Hagerstown and Jill Elaine Poffenberger of Clear Spring; two sons, Michael Allan Reese and Joseph Denton Reese, both of Boonsboro; one stepdaughter, Donna Jeanne Harsh of Williamsport; one sister, Rosetta Long of Middletown, Md.; two brothers, Robert Reese of Milford, Conn., and Edward Reese of Boonsboro; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, John Franklin Reese; one brother, Joseph Reese; and a granddaughter.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Donald E. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro cemetery with military honors by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald G. Kendle Sr.
CAVETOWN - Donald G. "Whitey" Kendle Sr., 62, of Goose Street, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 15, 1936, in Big Pool, he was the son of the late Martin W. Sr. and Alice Hull Kendle.
He was employed at Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa.; and Ryan Homes Inc. in Frederick.
He is survived by one daughter, Tammy L. Kendle Rowland of Hagerstown; two sons, Donald G. Kendle Jr. and Daniel L. Kendle, both of Hagerstown; three sisters, Ethel E. Tuiari of Philadelphia, Charlotte Eure of Baltimore and Pauline V. Welsh of Hagerstown; one half sister, Frances Milburn; one brother, Martin W. Kendle Jr. of Florida; and four grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg. The Rev. Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery in Clear Spring.

Wanda O. Brais
WEST HYATTSVILLE, Md. - Wanda Olive Brais, 90, of West Hyattsville, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Tacoma Park, Md.
Born May 4, 1909, in Davis, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Hunter Lawson Sipes and Frances Olive Cornelius Sipes.
Her husband, Natole George Brais, preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Melody Lee McFadden of Beltsville, Md.; two sons, Ronald N. Brais of Williamsport, and Kenneth D. Brais of Simpsonville, S.C.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Olive Brais Dent.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, Md. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
