Robert R. Kline
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Monsignor Robert R. Kline, 80, president of Mount Saint Mary's College and Seminary from 1961-67, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at the home of his nephew in Steelton, Pa.
Born Dec. 27, 1918, in Williamsport, Pa., he was the son of the late George F. Sr. and Gertrude Thibodeau Kline.
He was a professor of philosophy at the Mount for more than 40 years.
He attended Mount Saint Mary's College and Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on Feb. 25, 1945.
In 1946, he became a faculty member there, teaching philosophy, psychology and sociology. He was named assistant dean of men in 1947.
He was campus chaplain and philosophy department chair, and taught at St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg.
He earned his M.A. and Ph.D degrees from Georgetown University in 1959 and 1959, respectively.
In 1961 he was named the Mount's 18th president, and chaired a College Council of priests who were faculty members and administrators.
A priest of the Diocese of Scranton, Pa., Kline was elevated by Pope John XXIII to domestic prelate with the title right reverend monsignor.
After his presidency, he taught and chaired the philosophy department. In 1970 he chaired the psychology and sociology department.
He retired from full-time teaching in 1987 and was awarded the title emeritus professor. He taught occasionally afterward.
He was chaplain of St. Joseph College from 1957-61 and chaplain of its alumnae association.
He did committee work for Mount Saint Mary's and the church. He belonged to scholarly and professional associations in philosophy, religion and mental health.
His doctoral work was published by Georgetown University Press in 1960 as "The Present State of Axiology in the United States."
The Mount Saint Mary's National Alumni Association honored him with its highest alumnus honor, the Brut Medal, in 1974. He had served on the association's executive board.
He was awarded the Mount's President's Medal in 1986 and an honorary degree in 1997.
He is survived by one niece, Mary Halbritter of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; two nephews, Matthew Kline of Altoona, Pa., and Robert M. Kline of Steelton; three grand-nieces and two grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception at Mount Saint Mary's. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, adjacent to the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes.

Esther C. Barnett
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - Esther C. Barnett, 81, of Baldwin Avenue, died Monday, June 7, 1999, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1917, in Blue Island, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Ira and Esther Forry.
She is survived by one daughter, Pat Thomas of Berlin, Md., one son, Tom C. Barnett of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Romaine Utterback of Williamsport; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services and burial will be held at a later date.

Samantha Teter
Samantha Teter, infant daughter of Dennis E. and Kelley S. Wilmoth Teter of 17834 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 6, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Brooke R. Wilmoth of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, David and Judy Teter of Williamsport and paternal grandmother, Doris Teter of Halfway; paternal great-grandmother, Louise Wagaman; one nephew, and many aunts and uncles.
Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Kenneth R. McClure
Kenneth Richard McClure, 68, of 17618 Heisterboro Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Marier Health of Jacksonville, Fla.
Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Warren and Carrie Gerberich McClure.
He was previously employed with Reisner Products.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Laura Shaffer of Shippensburg, Pa. and Pam McClure of Dublin, Ga.; three sons, Michael McClure of Hagerstown, Ronald McClure of South Carolina and Richard McClure of Germantown, Md.; one sister, Eleanor Kline of Hagerstown; one brother, Donald McClure of Hagerstown; several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, 11420 Welsh Run, Mercersburg, Pa. The Rev. Roger K. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
Sarah B. Shafer
Sarah Brownley Beeler Shafer, 84, of Hagerstown, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born April 2, 1915, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ellsworth and Nina Marie Bender Beeler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Elmer Shafer.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Boonsboro.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Olive Branch, Chapter 34.
She is survived by one daughter, Georgann Brownley Salisbury of Hagerstown; two sisters, Mary Ann Welty and Bettie Jane Houser, both of Boonsboro; eleven nieces and nephews and several other relatives.
She was preceded in death two brothers, Joseph Ellsworth Beeler and James Michael Beeler.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1332 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Kathleen A. Hoover will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery, Boonsboro.
There will be no viewing.

Arnold S. Young, Sr.
KEEDYSVILLE - Arnold Spencer Young, Sr., 69, of 19422 Porterstown Road, Keedysville, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at his home.
Born Jan. 14, 1930, in Battle Creek, Neb., he was the son of the late James Cicero and Effie Rebecca Spencer Young.
He had been employed as a carpenter with several contractors in the Hagerstown area, retiring in 1975.
He had joined the U.S. Army but was discharged for medical reasons after completing basic training.
He was a member of Trinity Church of God, Brunswick, where he was an usher.
He was a member of A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Lorraine Moser Young, whom he married
in 1951; one daughter, Cindy L. Divel of Cleveland, Tenn.; one son, Rev. Arnold S. Young, Jr. of Keedysville; two sisters, Dolores Flook of Middletown, Md., and Bonita Shank of Boonsboro; two brothers, Dean Young of Boonsboro and Raymond Young of Keedysville; three grandsons, two great-grandsons and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma E. Young and Virginia Bibb and two brothers, Willie Lee Young and James Young.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Gary Getridge will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
