V. Ruth Toms
FOXVILLE, Md. - V. Ruth "Pete" Toms, 90, of Foxville Road, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Reeder's Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born Sept. 2, 1908, in Foxville, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Smith Lewis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clyde Toms, in 1977.
She was a member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, Foxville.
She is survived by a daughter, Caroline C. McAfee of Foxville; two sons, Clyde R. "Tink" Toms and Irving A. "Bob" Toms, both of Foxville; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Gaver, Maude Smith and Hattie Lewis.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, Foxville. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Cemetery, Foxville.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
Sandra G. Stonerock
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Sandra Gail Woods Stonerock, 40, of Springfield, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at St. John's Care Center, Springfield.
She was the daughter of Marion "Woody" Woods of Hillsboro, Ohio, and formerly of Hagerstown and the late Wilma Sue Lucente.
She attended Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, Ohio; and achieved a GED through Wright State University.
In addition to her father, she is survived by a daughter, Jessica Allen; her stepmother, Henrietta "Hank" Woods of Hillsboro; her stepfather, John T. Lucente of Beavercreek, Ohio; two sisters, Rose Michael of Shippensburg, Pa., and Kathy Bennett; three brothers, Ron Parman, Ted Parman and John A. Lucente; a granddaughter; nieces and nephews.
Services will be today at 10:30 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 49 Linden Ave., Springfield. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Kettering, Ohio.
Edgar W. Smith Jr.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Dr. Edgar Warren Smith Jr., 79, of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, in Albuquerque.
Born July 4, 1919, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Edgar Warren and Anna Wagner Smith Sr.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of New Mexico in 1948; a master of arts in English in 1950; and a doctorate in bilingual education in 1971. He attended Spanish language immersion classes at the Institute de lenguas de Guadalajara in Mexico.
He was an English teacher at Albuquerque High School, where he pioneered the Remedial Reading Program. He became an internationally recognized expert in reading. He pioneered teaching English to speakers of other languages in the Albuquerque public schools and at the University of New Mexico. He later taught the Head Start program at John Marshall Elementary; was vice principal at Lincoln Junior High, and at Van Buren Middle School. During summers, he taught English and literature at the College of St. Joseph. He retired in 1981.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Anzio Beach landing in Italy, and in the North African Campaign.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Albuquerque.
He was a volunteer teacher in health issues for seniors for the American Association of Educational Retirees. In 1993, he received the Health Advocacy Achievement Award from the American Association of Retired Persons.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Evelyn Baltzley, whom he married
Nov. 14, 1942; two daughters, Charity-Anne Dee Smith Forrest of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Sarah-Ellen Sally Smith Hinkebein of Albuquerque; a son, Matthew Smith of Albuquerque; a foster daughter, B. Joan Goodman; a sister, Betty Smith Topper of Waynesboro, Pa.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James L. Smith Sr. and Nelson P. Smith.

Donald W. Karn
Donald Wayne Karn, 63, of 11400 Stonecroft Court, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Colton Villa Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 22, 1935, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edgar Leroy and Clara Helen Hockman Karn.
He was employed by Pangborn Corp.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of Christ's Reformed Church.
He was a member of BPO Elks No. 378; First Hose Company, and AARP.
He is survived by two brothers, C. William Karn and his twin, Ronald H. Karn, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edgar Leroy Karn Jr. and Hubert Lee Karn.
Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Alice V. Younkins
BOONSBORO - Alice Viola Younkins, 97, of Reeders Memorial Home, and formerly of Jessup, Md., died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the home.
Born Feb. 9, 1902, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Carleton and Katherine Ford Moser.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin A. Younkins.
She was a homemaker.
She was a former member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church in Jessup.
She is survived by a daughter, Madeline Brothers of Annapolis; a sister, Etta Bitner of Boonsboro; a brother, Arthur Moser of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Zella Stull; a son, Willis Younkins; two sisters, and two brothers.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. John W. Zsittnik will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Michael D. Jenkins
WILLIAMSPORT - Michael Dale Jenkins, 37, of 8659 Downsville Pike, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999.
Born Dec. 16, 1961, in Oakland, Md., he was the son of Coit E. and Kathryn L. Hauser Jenkins of Clear Spring.
He attended Smithsburg High School and was a 1979 graduate of Clear Spring High School.
He was employed as a route salesman for Hagerstown Canteen Service.
He was a member of Woodmen of the World; and Williamsport Redmen Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Iva Jenkins of Swanton, Md.; a daughter, Kristy Dawn Jenkins, at home; a son, Adam Forrest Jenkins, at home; a sister, Rhonda Houser of Downsville; two brothers, Steven M. Jenkins and Jeffrey S. Jenkins, both of Clear Spring; two nieces and three nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Terrence Foor will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.
