George C. Wiebel Sr.
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. - George Clement Wiebel Sr., 89, of Coffey Street, Finley Park, died Monday, May 17, 1999, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1909, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Fechtig and Mabel Williams Wiebel.
He was a graduate of Lynchburg College and attended graduate school at Duke and Columbia universities.
He taught Latin and biology at Martinsville (Va.) High School, and was later principal.
He began working at Carolina Mirror in 1950 and retired in 1977 as head of the wall mirror division.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He was mayor of North Wilkesboro from 1966 to 1981; was a member of the board of trustees of the Northwestern Bank; and the North Wilkesboro Elks Lodge. He was inducted in 1992 into the Sports Hall of Fame at Lynchburg College for basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Schottland Wiebel; two daughters, Frances W. Yale of Moravian Falls, N.C., and Ellen Martin Wiebel of Raleigh, N.C.; one son, George C. Wiebel Jr., of North Wilkesboro; and one grandchild.
Graveside memorial services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery in Wilkesboro. The Revs. Ken Asel and Frank McKenzie officiated.
The family received friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Common.

John T. Buckley
KEEDYSVILLE - John Thomas "Buck" Buckley, 67, of 5827 Red Hill Road, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at his home.
Born July 5, 1931, in Sharon, Pa., he was the son of the late William Joseph and Gertrude Schumacher Buckley. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Rose and Thomas A. Byrne.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorn Marie Metts Buckley, in 1995.
He was a retired employee of the Federal Printing Office in Washington, D.C.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
He was a member of Federal Printing Workers Local Union No. 713 in Washington, D.C.; and AARP.
He is survived by a daughter, Roseann M. Hyvarinen of Keedysville; five sisters, Margaret Combine of Sharon, Pa., Patricia Miller and Eileen Fromm, both of Pennsylvania, Rita Gill of Waldorf, Md., and Rosemary Byrne of Washington, D.C.; a brother, William Buckley of Sharon; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorn M. Buckley; a son, Thomas W. Buckley; two sisters, Margaret Harden and Betty Rudbeck; and two brothers, Ted Buckley and Thomas Byrne.
Graveside services with military honors will be Wednesday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

David L. Winters Sr.
David Luther Winters Sr., 52, of 1041 H Noland Drive, Hagerstown, died Monday, May 17, 1999, in Cumberland, Md., as a result of an automobile accident.
Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Catherine Dunn Winters of Hagerstown and the late Jack Winters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Winters, in 1998.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by four daughters, Ronda Gipe of Williamsport and Patricia Winters, Joanie Winters and Tonya Winters, all of Hagerstown; four sons, David Charlie Winters Jr. of Smithsburg and Travis Winters, Ronnie Winters and Cory Winters, all of Hagerstown; five sisters, Delores Seal of Indiana, Betty Carter and Margaret Clark, both of Hagerstown, Jacqueline Shifflet of Greencastle, Pa., and Barbara Snowberger of Waynesboro, Pa.; a brother, Ronnie Winters of Hawaii; 16 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles R. Palmer Sr.
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Charles Roy "Sonny" Palmer Sr., 56, of Myersville, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his home.
Born March 13, 1943, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Florence E. Green Palmer of Myersville and the late Charles Robert Palmer.
He previously was employed by Olden's Excavation, Boonsboro; Washington County Sheriffs Department; and most recently with James Cochran Auctioneer, Boonsboro.
He was a member of Pleasant Walk United Methodist Church, Pleasant Walk, Md.
He was a member of National Rifle Association; First Hose Co. of Boonsboro; and North American Hunting Club.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Angelia Lynn Kline of Hagerstown; two sons, Charles Roy Palmer Jr. of Williamsport and Sonny Lee Palmer of Gracey, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Kelly Easterday of Boonsboro; four sisters, Beverly Hines and Diane Harshman, both of Boonsboro, Kathy Adkins of Jefferson, Md., and Cheryl Palmer of Waynesboro, Pa.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Walk United Methodist Church, Pleasant Walk. The Rev. Hayden Sparks will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Myersville.

William E. Stevens
William Elmer Stevens, 64, of 11403 Stonecroft Court, Hagerstown, died Monday, May 17, 1999, at his home.
Born July 4, 1934, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Owen E. Stevens and Viola Clopper DeNobrega.
He attended Hagerstown High School.
He was last employed by Washington County Association of Retarded Citizens.
He was a Protestant.
He was a member of the Salvation Army.
He is survived by four daughters, Diane Stevens Graham, Laura Stevens Minnick and Nickole L. Stevens, all of Hagerstown, and Barbara L. Stevens of Hopkinsville, Ky.; a son, Gerald L. Stevens of Waynesboro, Va.; a stepson, Stephen E. Heefner of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Dr. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Brandon T. Rhodes
SHARPSBURG - Brandon Travis Rhodes, infant son of Randy Lee and Sarah Kathleen Giffin Rhodes of Sharpsburg, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1999, in Hagerstown.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Lee and Trude Rhodes of Sharpsburg; maternal grandparents, Carlos Giffin of Sharpsburg and Maxine Giffin of Hagerstown; step grandmother, Carrie Giffin of Sharpsburg; paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Rhodes of Keedysville; maternal great-grandmother, Marie Eighner of Germany; and five brothers, Kristopher Rhodes, Scottie Rhodes, Joshua Rhodes, Matthew Rhodes and Adam Rhodes, all at home.
Services will be Saturday at noon at Christian Holiness Church, 2812 Rohrersville Road, Gapland. The Rev. Jimmy Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Gail E. Hunter
SMITHSBURG - Gail E. Hunter, 52, of 23130 Welty Church Road, Smithsburg, who died Saturday, May 15, 1999, was a member and past director of Pen Mar Regional Association of Realtors, where she received several awards including Realtor of the Year in 1995, the John Younkins Memorial Award for High Standards and Ethics, Association Distinguished Sales Associate in 1988; and Distinguished Service Award in 1998.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ, 14420 Barkdoll Road, Ringgold.
