Susan E. Gaylor
Susan Elizabeth Gaylor, 86, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Riley P. and Susan Rockwell Sipes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis C. Gaylor, in 1966.
She was a member of Williamsport American Legion Post No. 202 Auxiliary; and Red Men Tribe No. 84 also of Williamsport.
She is survived by two nieces, Saundra Myers of Hagerstown and Betty Lou McElroy of Mercersburg; a great-niece; a great-nephew; two great-great-nieces; and a great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Shanabrook; and two brothers, Eugene Sipes and Jacob Roy Sipes.
Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
Nettie W. Hughes
Nettie Watson Hughes, 74, of 43 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John Richard Watson Sr. and Nettie Elizabeth Watson.
She was a graduate of North Street High School.
She retired from the Dietary Department of Washington County Hospital after 20 years.
She was a member of Ebenezer AME Church.
She operated a variety store on Jonathan Street with her brother. She worked at Watson Funeral Home, owned by her family for more than 50 years.
She was a volunteer at Washington County Hospital.
She is survived by two nieces, Sadie Thompson of Baltimore and Donna Haynes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three nephews, Lewis R. Watson of Roosevelt, N.Y., Steven I. Watson of Fort Washington, Md., and David S. Watson Jr. of Philadelphia; great-nephews; and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Rosetta Watson Andrews; and two brothers, John Richard Watson Jr. and David S. Watson Sr.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer AME Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Leroy Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, 24 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown.
Richard P. Timmins
Lt. Col. Retired Richard Patrick Timmins, 85, of 10842 Oak Valley Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 4, 1913, in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late Arthur Joseph and Caroline Rhuland Timmins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna M. Timmins, in 1989.
He was a carpenter with Scott Barber Construction; and worked for H.L. Mills.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He was a member of Army Officer's Association; American Legion Morris Frock Post No. 42; and AARP. He was a volunteer with Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa V. Timmins; two stepdaughters, Roberta Rice of Martinsburg and Linda Spigler of Hagerstown; a stepson, Robert Donati of Williamsport; a sister, Grace Schakleford of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Robert G. Timmins of Florida; four step grandchildren; and five nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. Christopher P. Moore will be celebrant. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport with graveside services by American Legion Morris Frock Post No. 42.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Sylvia P. Balthus
Sylvia Pearl Balthus, 74, of 1404 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at her home.
Born July 24, 1924, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of Margie E. Allen Hixon and the late John Wesley Hixon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leroy Balthus, in 1993.
She retired from Washington County Hospital after 22 years.
She was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church and Golden Rule Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Ladies of the Elks 378.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Wesley Balthus of Clear Spring and Larry Wayne Balthus of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John M. Baer Jr.
WOLFSVILLE, Md. - John M. "Sonny" Baer Jr., 65, of Martin Road, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at his home.
Born Aug. 20, 1933, in Wolfsville, he was the son of the late John M. and Hattie M. Eccard Bear Sr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie J. Baer, in 1991.
He was employed by Mack Trucks Inc., Hagerstown.
He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Wolfsville.
He was a member of South Mountain Rod and Gun Club, Smithsburg. He was a former member of Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association; and Cascade American Legion Post No. 239.
He is survived by a daughter, Penny Rowland of Wolfsville; two sisters, Lorraine Harne of Wolfsville and Charlotte Morgan of Middletown, Md.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Effie Keller and Catherine Frushour; and two brothers, Robert Bear and Lloyd Bear.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Pastor Randy Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Cemetery, Wolfsville.
The family will receive friends Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

James H. Tederick
WILMINGTON, Del. - James Heyward Tederick, 84, of Wilmington, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Elsmere Veterans Affairs Hospital in Elsmere, Del.
Born May 23, 1914, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Asa O. and Catherine Neal Brantner Tederick.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Dora M. Tederick, in 1984.
He worked at Interwoven Mills and he and his wife ran Wheatland Motel for 20 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean during World War II and was a member of USS Brooklyn baseball team.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and Chambers Men's Bible Class. He attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Delaware and was a member of the ABC Sunday School class.
He played semi-pro baseball in Martinsburg, playing with the Blue Sox in the 1940s and 1950s, and later with the Blair Team of the Bi-county League.
He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Tederick of Martinsburg and Alice Haines of Baltimore; four nieces, including Sheila D. James, with whom he lived; and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn Schad and Mary Fultz; and three brothers, Lucien Tederick, Paul Tederick and Thomas Tederick.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Berkeley Post 14, American Legion.
