Charles F. Lowery Sr.
Charles Franklin Lowery Sr., 68, of 11912 Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Avalon Manor in Hagerstown.
Born April 13, 1931, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late Earl and Ruby Virginia Holmes Lowery.
He was employed by the Maryland State Roads Department, retiring in 1993.
He was a Methodist.
He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Lowery of Hagerstown; a son, Charles F. Lowery Jr. of Clear Spring; a daughter, Pamela Sue Smith of Hagerstown; a sister, Evelyn Sweeting of Baltimore; a brother, Leo Earl Lowery of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice George.
Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 127 Britner Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Terry Foor will officiate.
Friends may call at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m.
Harold A. Shuff
Harold A. Shuff, 78, of 11824 Clearview Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 28, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Siva L. and Jessie V. Lowman Shuff.
He was a supervisor at Fairchild Aircraft, where he worked for 43 years. He retired in 1983.
A World War II veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps in Iceland and Greenland.
He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post No. 42 American Legion, Hagerstown; and VFW William Max McLaughlin Post No. 695, Waynesboro, Pa.
He also was a member of Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro and BPO Elks Lodge No. 378, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Marie F. LeVasseur Shuff; two sons, Thomas H. Shuff of Hagerstown and John A. Shuff of Baltimore; a granddaughter; and a niece.
Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate.

Walter L. Hammond
Walter Lorenz Hammond, 70, of 17726 Burnside Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his home.
Born July 7, 1928, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Robert B. and Hedwig L. Muench Hammond.
He was employed at E.J. Fennel for 44 years. He retired from Rotorex in Walkersville, Md., in 1993.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
He was a member of Post 211 Funkstown American Legion; Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.; Redmen Tribe 84, Williamsport; BPOE 378; and AMVETS Post 10, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy B. Hammond; a daughter, Brenda K. Poe of Maugansville; a son, Walter L. Hammond Jr. of Hagerstown; a brother, Robert G. Hammond of Hagerstown; and two granddaughters.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bertha V. Farmer
GAPLAND - Bertha Virginia Virts Farmer, 83, of 3207 Gapland Road, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born April 15, 1916, in Hamilton, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Mable Hamilton Kennan.
Her husband, Roosevelt Farmer, preceded her in death.
She was a retired custodian with National Geographic Society, Gaithersburg, Md.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Burkittsville, Md.
She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Love of Brunswick, Md.; two sons, George Virts of Purcellville, Va., and Lester Virts Sr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Virts; and a brother, Clarence Kennan.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick. The Rev. Andrea J. Ernest will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery, Brownsville, Md.
The family will receive friends today and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

BALTIMORE - Mary Jane Miller, 67, of Baltimore, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.
She was born Nov. 25, 1931.
She is survived by three daughters, Rose T. Shriner of Hagerstown, and Catherine Hedges and Donna Bowles, both of Baltimore; a son, George Bowles of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; and cousins.
There will be no viewing or service.

Marie J. Knapp
Marie Josephine Knapp, 75, of 125 Nottingham Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Iva L. Miller Lindsay.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick R. Knapp III, in 1983.
She was employed by her daughter at J.K. Accounting, Hagerstown.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
She was a member of AMVETS Post 10 Auxiliary and of Odd Fellows Temple.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith M. Koontz and Margaret G. Dibert, both of Hagerstown; two sons, John E. Knapp of York, Pa., and Frederick R. Knapp IV of Hagerstown; a sister, Dorothy Shaffer of McConnellsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Vincent T. Lindsay of Hagerstown and Clarence W. Lindsay Jr. of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Katherine E. Gordon
Katherine Elizabeth Gordon, 78, of 274 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Morning Glory Retirement Home in State Line, Pa.
Born May 2, 1920, in New York, she was the daughter of the late William O. and Sylva B. Brown Lisle.
She retired from International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Brethren in Christ Church, and Willing Workers Class.
She is survived by three daughters, Sylva Kestler of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Diana Turner of Clear Spring and Beth Sirbaugh of Boonsboro; a son, Ray Gordon of Hagerstown; a sister, Edna Murphy of Mantua, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sharon Gordon and Janice Gordon.
Memorial services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Pleasant Hill United Brethren in Christ Church, 3664 Coseytown Road, Greencastle, Pa. Pastor Jim Mack will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
