Mary Jane Barger
SMITHSBURG - Mary Jane Barger, 72, of Wolfsville Road, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at her home.
Born Dec. 5, 1926, in Wolfsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Della May Lewis Wolfe.
She was a member of Mount Pleasant Church of God, Smithsburg.
She is survived by her husband, Alfred H. Barger; a son, Dennis A. Barger of Frederick, Md.; two brothers, Charles Wolfe and Melvin Wolfe, both of Smithsburg; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Pastor Gregory L. Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Bethel Cemetery, Foxville, Md.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Elsie M. Horst
WILLIAMSPORT - Elsie Mabel Horst, 88, of Williamsport, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Homewood Retirement Center.
Born May 31, 1910, she was the daughter of the late David L. and Alice Deatrich Horst.
She was a 1926 graduate of Washington County High School. She received her teaching certificate at Towson Normal School in 1928, and a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1939. She received a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She took courses in Guidance and Counseling.
She taught in Washington County Schools for 27 years and was a school counselor for 12 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught intermediates and adults, was trustee and a member of Stewardship Committee and the Personnel Committee. She organized the Over 60 Club that planned activities for retirees and formed a travel club.
She was a member of AAUW; Womens Club; AARP; Commission on Aging; and Hospital Auxiliary. She worked in education groups where she served as president of local Teachers' Association; School Counselors and Retired Teachers. She was elected state president of Classroom Teachers and Maryland Retired Teachers.
She is survived by two sisters, Florence Wheeler of Silver Spring, Md., and Mary Weller of Hagerstown; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews; and a great-great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church at Washington Square. The Revs. Eddie Blackman and Wendell Gross will officiate.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
Beulah L. McFarland
Beulah Lee McFarland, 94, of 1303 Hamilton Blvd., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.
Born April 20, 1904, in Berryville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Mary Kannaw McDonald.
Her husband, Paul H. McFarland Sr., died in 1984.
She retired from Moller Music Store.
She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
She also was a member of Soroptomist Club.
She is survived by one sister, Nannie M. Silman of Berryville, Va.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Paul H. McFarland Jr.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Revs. Richard W. Simpson and Raymond Mooreland will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.; and at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Bessie M. Palmer
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Bessie May Palmer, 88, of Myrtle Beach, and formerly of Bloomfield, N.J., died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Conway Nursing Center.
Born Dec. 20, 1910, in Funkstown, she was the daughter of the late Edward C. and Lilly N. Dick Duffey.
Her husband, Reichard R. "Joe" Palmer, preceded her in death.
She was a retired buyer for Hahne & Co. and W.T. Grant Co.
She attended St. Philips Lutheran Church.
She is survived by 19 nieces and nephews.
Services were held March 14 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach. Burial was in Southeastern Memorial Gardens.
Clara V. Gruber-Sharer
Clara Virginia Gruber-Sharer, 92, of 14014 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, and formerly of Clear Spring, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown.
Born Nov. 22, 1906, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Samuel E. and Annie Laura Shupp Gruber.
Her husband, Howard Sharer, preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Kline and Daisy Albert; and four brothers, Clyde Abram Gruber, Howard Gruber, Bruce Gruber and Walter Gruber.
Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Paul cemetery in Clear Spring. The Rev. Allen Strite will officiate.

Harold O. McCleaf
Harold Ohler McCleaf, 74, of 306 N. Colonial Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 21, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Mary A. Carbaugh McCleaf.
He was employed by D.C. Transit, retiring in 1972 after 24 years.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he received a purple heart during the battle of Iwo Jima.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy T. McCleaf; two daughters, Carole Joy Brown of Bryans Road, Md., and Lennis Jean Hermansen of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Michael Jay McCleaf of Rockville, Md.; a sister, June Dann of Belifont, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris McCleaf and Louise Nuckels; and three brothers, Robert McCleaf, Grayson McCleaf and Ralph McCleaf.
Graveside services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville. The Rev. L. James Downs will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
