Melvin T. Fleegle
HANCOCK - Melvin T. Fleegle, 61, of Sensel Road, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born Sept. 4, 1937, in Hancock, he was the son of George T. McMullen of Hancock and the late Lillie Ray Fleegle; and the stepson of the late Harry George Fleegle.
He was employed for 20 years by the Washington County Roads Department as a truck driver; and was employed by the town of Hancock as a police officer for 15 years.
He was a member of Faith in God Chapel in Berkeley Springs.
He was a safety steward for the Washington County Road Department; and a former member of Fraternal Order of Police.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Margaret F. Barnes Fleegle of Hancock, whom he married
Dec. 23, 1955; a daughter, Debbie Fleegle of Berkeley Springs; a son, Michael T. Fleegle of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Emory Fleegle of Hancock; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria F. Fleegle; and a brother, Arnold Fleegle.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Ken Dyer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 p.m.

Leona J. Byers
WILLIAMSPORT - Leona Jane Byers, 79, of 25 N. Conococheague St., Williamsport, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 17, 1919, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Sarah Jane Timmons McCauley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Bruce Byers, in 1980.
She owned and operated Locust Point Market, Hagerstown, until her retirement. Prior to that she worked for Federal Silk Mill, Williamsport.
She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Byers, at home; one son, Rollin E. Byers of Williamsport; one sister, Mae Palmer of Williamsport; three brothers, Jack L. McCauley and Sonny McCauley, both of Pinesburg, Md., and Paul McCauley of Waynesboro, Pa.; six grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Clipp; one sister, Marie Jackson; one brother, John McCauley; one half sister, Frances Barnhart; and two half brothers, Carl McCauley and Samuel McCauley.
Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Charles R. Carter
BALTIMORE - Charles Richard Carter, 70, of 5517 North Medwick Garth, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the home of his mother in Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Dec. 20, 1928, in Ellicott City, Md., he was the son of Ruth Hutton Carter of Chambersburg and the late Robert Carter.
He graduated from Ellicott City High School.
He was a retired surveyor for the state of Maryland.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of Brantley Baptist in Baltimore. He attended Open Door Church while in Chambersburg.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Alma McCullough of Falling Waters, W.Va.; nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Cemetery, Ellicott City.
There will be no public viewing.
Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
Kathryn E. Spahr
Kathryn Elizabeth Spahr, 87, of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, and formerly of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 26, 1911, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ellen Lowery Bowman.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Cora Stitely of Atlanta; nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
Robert N. Hagerman Jr.
WILLIAMSPORT - Robert Nevin Hagerman Jr., 80, of 14C Milestone Garden Apartments, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1918, in Williamson, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert N. Hagerman Sr. and Florence Rettig Hagerman.
He was a retired administrator with University Nursing Home in Silver Spring, Md.
He was a member of Beaver Creek Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Frances D. Hagerman; a son, Robert N. Hagerman III of Hagerstown; and a grandson.
Burial and services will be private.
Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
Pauline V. Smith
Pauline Virginia Smith, 47, of 812 W. Washington St., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1951, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Minnie Mae Johnson and the late John H. Johnson.
She attended North Hagerstown High School.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Valeria Smith of Baltimore; a sister, Jacqueline Thompson of Baltimore; aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, North Jonathan Street, Hagerstown. The Rev. Anthony Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Josephine M. Shindle
Josephine Marie Shindle, 66, of 1212 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 13, 1933, in Lockport, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Frances Renna Angelo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Shindle, in 1988.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
She is survived by three sons, David Shindle of Hagerstown, Mark Leonard Shindle of Anchorage, Alaska, and Michael Dennis Shindle; two sisters, Kay Angelo of Detroit and Mamie Angelo of Lockport; two brothers, John Angelo of Fort Myers, Fla., and Anthony Angelo of Newfane, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Grout and Anne Angelo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. Christopher Moore will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
